Fortune Teller's Reading - Kids

Mom2Monkeys · 22/10/2016 13:25

Didn't know where to put this post.
I often worry about a prediction a fortune teller told me.

Went to see the same one twice, but the first time was in a big audience and he really didn't recognise me the second time, which was at his shop.
He's done quite well out of fortune telling - well-known and has sold books.

I have Romany Gypsies in my distant past (a great grandparent's upbringing), so I've always been curious. I bought Tarrot cards to see if I could learn them, but after this incident it's put me off. I was never sure I really believed in what they had to say, but I had an open mind.

First time I saw him he said things that no-one would have known. He also said I'd have a son who would be musical - I am very musical also.
Anyway, as it turns out, I did have a son, but I had a daughter first.

The second time I saw him he read a ring I gave him that used to belong to my Great-grandmother (engagement), but I always wore it. He closed his eyes and said that a little girl would come into my life and be with me for a while - he kept repeating this. Then he said she would go away again, but I would have a son would bring the family closer together again.

When he said this, he looked at me in shock like he was panicking a bit. He looked really uncomfortable. Then he ended the meeting. Since then, I've been really worried that that little girl is my daughter and that something is going to happen to her. Everytime something almost happens - she gets close to what could be a potential accident, I start to panic.

Could he have been reading my great-grandmother's past, instead of my fortune? She had a son, but there might have been another child I didn't know about. I would advice people not to go to fortune tellers. The reading was now 7 years ago, and it still haunts me. I'd like to hear feedback from people who are open-minded on this issue, as I'm sure lots of people will also tell me it's all rubbish. Also, advice on how I can forget it. Thanks.

People who give readings like this can be very damaging to the gullible.

I don't see any reason why MNHQ would delete the thread though.

WildDigestive · 22/10/2016 14:32

OP, I entirely agree that this kind of charlatan can be very damaging to the gullible or vulnerable. If you want help forgetting it, there are numerous Mn threads in which people have posted about their hilarious inaccurate 'readings'.

Grumpyoldblonde · 22/10/2016 14:33

Please don't worry OP , this man did not read your future, you know, I think it was really unprofessional of him and cruel to even plant such a doubt.
These people are actors, sometimes very good actors. Derren Brown exposes them quite well, have a read.

Cel982 · 22/10/2016 14:33

OP, no 'psychic' has ever been able to prove their skills in a controlled experiment. Never. Nobody has the ability to predict the future, it hasn't happened yet.

Don't waste any more of your life thinking about what this charlatan has said. Honestly, these people should be locked up for causing so much unnecessary misery...

Onnapostit · 22/10/2016 14:39

I believe they are a load of bollocks, but there was a time where I half-believed in them - when I was at my most miserable and insecure and I think that feeling of not being in control fed into my wanting to believe.

I was told by someone who is very successful that I'd have no issue having children, that when I wanted to get pregnant, it would happen quickly for me. That I'd have a girl and then a boy. Well, we were TTC for a year unsuccessfully at the time of the reading, and had been referred to a fertility clinic. Another 2 years on, with the help of clomid, I had a boy. Followed by 4 miscarriages, and despite about a year on fertility treatment after that, failed to conceive any more, and highly unlikely to now.

But I do understand that you don't want to believe the 'prediction' but your mind cannot get away from it so what about going to another psychic with a good reputation, explaining your concerns about the original readings and see if they can set your mind at ease with a new reading that either explains or clarifies it for you. You'll be skeptical on one level, as you are about the original reading but it might put that subconcious niggle in the back of your head to rest once and for all.

TathitiPete · 22/10/2016 14:45

My brother and his girlfriend once went to a fortune teller. My brother was told he'd have 2 children. His girlfriend was told she'd have none! Anyway, they now have an adorable little two month old girl.

MarianneSolong · 22/10/2016 14:46

I am quite a 'rational' person but used to hang out with New Age types. Once - at a difficult time - I visited a psychic. Not a celebrity one, and on impulse.

My suspicion is that there are people who 'see' things. However, it isn't an exact science.

So the guy could have been wrong, or be talking about the person who owned the ring. Or the girl he was talking about could have been a friend's child.

I think it is natural to feel anxious and protective of our children, at times.

But it'd be good if you could let go of this....

SuckingEggs · 22/10/2016 14:48

"Ha ha ha" is simply pathetic. Unable to even think of a username!

Please try not to worry. This person is no more powerful than you. It's unethical to tell people such stuff - a sure sign of a charlatan who wants you to go back again for further "info", I reckon.

MrsToddsShortcut · 22/10/2016 14:48

Sorry you feel upset OP. I suffer from anxiety and to have carried this worry around with you for so long must have been horrible. Can I gently guide you in the direction of this book?

Paranormality

It debunks all the commonly held beliefs in all things woo with basic science, including fortune tellers/psychics etc. Hopefully it will help you feel better about this. It really is a hugely reassuring book for anyone with fears around psychics/the occult/ghosts etc. Flowers

ShmooBooMoo · 22/10/2016 14:52

I hate these unscrupulous idiots, playing on people's fears and curiosity. I would give fortune tellers, astrology, tarot cards etc a wide berth. It all BS! It's trickery, not real! it is not life-enhancing! It has had a very negative impact on your mind and this is likely to be affecting how you treat your daughter. She will pick up on your anxiety. You need to overcome this for your and her sake.

Don't be fooled by this man's reputation, book sales etc All that means is that he's mastered and honed the various people-reading techniques and methods they use to 'read your future'. There is nothing supernatural going on, no super powers at work!

This might help to dispel your fears a little.
io9.gizmodo.com/5923509/how-to-convince-people-you-have-psychic-powers

There are people like Derren Brown who expose these people:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derren_Brown

If you are a person of faith, ask a vicar or priest to pray with you to overcome your fear/ anxiety.

Don't listen to anyone here whose only contribution is to laugh or take the mickey.

ShmooBooMoo · 22/10/2016 14:54

Don't go to another 'fortune teller'...that is absolutely not the way forward.

WildDigestive · 22/10/2016 14:56

what about going to another psychic with a good reputation, explaining your concerns about the original readings and see if they can set your mind at ease with a new reading that either explains or clarifies it for you

I think that's a really poor idea. Apart from a vulnerable person handing over yet more money to a fraud in the hope of reassurance, it encourages the OP to continue to believe, or half-believe in 'psychics', and just think she got a bad one seven years ago.

growapear · 22/10/2016 15:20

Perhaps try to think of what you would say to a friend who told you this story ? That can help get things into perspective. Agree with the other posters re. fortune tellers.

fanoir · 22/10/2016 15:23

I'm open minded and prepared to be proved wrong but I do not believe anyone has the ability to predict the future. I think these people can be very tuned in and brilliant at reading people so where you think there is no way he could know anything about you there is likely to be subtle clues in your body language which they pick up on particular in your responses to certain subjects they mention which they then home in on.

I went with a friend for a tarot reading (I didn't have one done but she did) and the lady said a lot of things which were absolutely spot on but there was also a lot that was miles out. My friend has 2 dcs with her husband and the psychic said she could tell that her partner would be an excellent father when they had children - friend replied yes he is. The psychic obviously had no idea that my friend already had children but my friend believed this to be another spookily accurate prediction and she glossed over the things that were not correct as she so wanted to believe.

WhooooAmI24601 · 22/10/2016 15:31

I'm open minded about all sorts but this is just vulnerable people being used and fleeced in the most awful of ways. You never hear of fortune tellers whooping and going "bloody hell love, you're going to win the lottery a week next tuesday" because the bad and worrying information has so much more staying power.

I genuinely believe there should be regulations around this sort of thing, because the only person who goes to a fortune teller is someone looking for something, either a person they've lost or a part of themselves. Either way, that fortune teller is making money from someone else's worst fears. You may not think they could possibly know x, y or z, but a rough guess is all they need to have you thinking they're legit. I hope you can get past this and genuinely enjoy your DCs childhoods. If something was ever to happen to one of them, it would be nothing at all to do with some fortune teller and everything to do with chance.

KidLorneRoll · 22/10/2016 15:36

Nobody, but nobody can tell the future. Of the people who claim they can, 99% are frauds and the other 1% are deluded.

vacati0n · 22/10/2016 15:55

I had a similar reading 7years ago , I was told something was going to happen to one of my girls and I would have to move out of the area , it was on my mind every time they went out , when some one puts the seed there it is hard trying not to think about it .

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/10/2016 16:03

If you are a person of faith, ask a vicar or priest to pray with you to overcome your fear/ anxiety.

How is belief in a god any more rational than belief in a psychic?

user1469914265 · 22/10/2016 16:37

Ha

eatdrinkandbemarysfairy · 22/10/2016 16:42

i was told that there would be a death in my family in may
this was said over 20 years ago and even though i know its all bollox i still hate may and glad when june comes along
these bastards dont realize what they say can play on peoples minds as long as they get their money theyre happy
scum

PoldarksBreeches · 22/10/2016 16:56

I think that lots of parents have a fear that their child will be lost to them somehow. It's the flip side of loving them so much - the fear of loss is overwhelming. This charlatan has to,d you some shit that has spoken to the fear/anxiety in you. It's not real, it's not true.

abbsismyhero · 22/10/2016 17:10

I was told I would have one child a boy my first was a girl my second and third were boys

Move on from this

Try thinking about it like this you have a girl she goes to university moves on with her life you don't have as much contact as you used to then she gets pregnant with a boy moves closer and you see them all the time doesn't that make more sense?

KungFuPandaWorksOut · 22/10/2016 17:14

I enjoy all this but, believe it's down to how you perceive it. For instance I had my palm read whilst heavily pregnant, she said a month that would be significant for me (it turned out to be my baby's birth month who was born in the wrong month than what we was told)
A number that would have significant (we linked it as our wedding date)
You can link that information too whatever you like!

Also on the same holiday I was stopped accosted in the street by somebody who claimed to be a psychic. She then proudly told me I will be announcing my pregnancy soon, my DH gave her a Hmm look and pointed out my humongous pregnant belly. She exclaimed AHA! Told you I was psychic. She told us the gender of our baby, we informed her the scans told us opposite. She claimed we were "questioning" her abilities. She then looked my partner in the eyes and said you are one of 7 boys. He told her she was wrong, she argued that she's the one with the gift not him and she knows she's correct. We decided now was the time to escape her, and was tried too make a getaway she demanded £5 for her reading Confused
She informed us of three things.
2 of which were wrong and 1 was bloody obvious!

It's harmless in my view Aslong as you don't let it consume you.

user1473509591 · 22/10/2016 17:18

This sort of thing would panic me too. A few years ago a friend read some cards for me. She told me I had two paths, and in one if I didn't change my contraception I would fall pregnant, and it would mean I would have to give up work and I would regret it. The other path, if I did change my contraception, would mean I would have a very successful career. I didn't change my contraception, and lo and behold I fell pregnant! Although there were other factors than this reading i was unsure what to do. I went ahead with the pregnancy but i had an awful niggling feeling throughout. I also had awful PND and almost had to give up work. It was coming true. But I persevered and came out the other side, and I have since started a degree. I'll never forget that reading, but while she predicted my pregnancy (and please bare in mind I had no intention of having another child so it wasn't like my friend was encouraging the conception or anything) I was determined not to set too much heed by it.
