Recently went to local restaurant which we go to regularly so know the manager who has a reputation for being a bit tricky. The whole group ordered from the lighter bite menu. I ordered a macaroni cheese with garlic bread (which I have never ordered before). When we came to pay, I noticed I had been charged for the large portion from the main menu(£6.50 more expensive)
When I questioned it,
the manager said, "you didn't say you wanted the small one"
I said "I didn't say I wanted the larger one either and the other one says it comes with garlic ciabatta and I said the one with garlic bread"
Him, " they are both garlic bread, madame and you didn't say which one you wanted, did you not notice that it was the larger one?"
Me, (staying very polite) "No, I have never ordered it before and why did you assume, I wanted the big one when we all ordered from the lighter bite menu?"
You, "you are an adult"
Me, "But surely if there are 2 sizes, it is up to you to ascertain which one?"
Him, getting very exasperated and irritated, "you need to see this from my point of view, oh forget it, i'll charge for the smaller one, I can't be bothered to argue" He strops off.
Left feeling quite troubled. This is somewhere we give a lot of custom to. I now feel awkward about going back.

Was I wrong to question the order? For me it was clear that the one I ordered was the small one with garlic bread NOT the one which was labelled with ciabatta.

I'm not sure why people think yabu when you didn't know there was a larger portion and ate it not knowing that it was wrong. More to the point though: £13.50 for macaroni cheese??? Was the pasta gold plated? I make the best macaroni cheese, come to my house and I'll make it for pennies 😂.

dustarr73 · 15/10/2016 19:56

I think people are reading a different thread to me.

Op didnt specify the small mac and cheese cause she didnt know the bigger version existed.
Its up too the staff to ask. They know the menu better than she does.It just makes you think how many times they have done this and not been caught.Manager sounds like Basil Faulty.

SirChenjin · 15/10/2016 19:58

I totally agree dust!

TeacherBob · 15/10/2016 20:00

I think UANBU and shouldnt eat there again

LeggyLinda · 15/10/2016 20:04

I think this is down to a breakdown in communication and ther are faults on both sides.
The manager was being very unreasonable in calling you an adult when it is clear that you have limited experience of restaurants.
And you were slightly unreasonable in accepting a main course and eating it before complaining.
If you are only ordering one course it is not unreasonable to assume you are only ordering a main. You got that for the price of a Lite Bite in the end so I think you did well there.

Itisraining · 15/10/2016 20:04

wow, this is the first time I have posted something like this and the variety of replies are really interesting. Some people just want to have a go about my carb intake or use of the English language, one person has accused me of being smug when I was quite nervous about talking to the manager (who took the order himself) and did it very subtly so no one could hear. There are people who don't even seem to have read the opening post properly. But thank you to all the posters who have offered insightful points of view.

and there goes another assumption, usual!!

YANBU. Everyone ordered from the lighter bite menu. You has no idea there was a menu you didn't see with a similarly named larger serving. The staff are responsible for knowing the menu and checking with you if there's ambiguity. You are not.

SirChenjin · 15/10/2016 20:14

Did that sound as snide in your head as it does written down Linda?

diddl · 15/10/2016 20:14

Op, could you just clarify if you were looking at a menu that only had light bites stuff on it?

Cheby · 15/10/2016 20:14

YANBU OP. If there were two sizes of the same meal on a menu, I would always expect a waiter to check, to avoid this exact situation! It's in their own interest.

ConvincingLiar · 15/10/2016 20:15

Staff should know the menu better than customers and check orders. Yanbu. He sounds like a tit.

witsender · 15/10/2016 20:16

I would expect them to check, but would always expect to state if not the main menu one. So yabu a bit really.

Itisraining · 15/10/2016 20:16

For example, usual. I have taken on board that other posters would err on the side of caution and say that it is from the LBM even though that particular item of food only appears on the LBM menu labelled that way.

DesolateWaist · 15/10/2016 20:23

Is there one big menu with the 'lighter bites' section as a part of it or is it a completely separate menu?

QueenLizIII · 15/10/2016 20:23

I wouldn't expect to pay £13.50 for Mac Cheese so I dont think YABU to assume you had the small one.

For future reference I usually point at the menu too and say this one.

Soubriquet · 15/10/2016 20:23

It does sound like it wasn't easy to see if it was the lite bite or the main meal

The staff will need to clear that up in future.

However they served the food, you ate the food, you need to pay for the food

2kids2dogsnosense · 15/10/2016 20:25

YANBU!

Waiting staff should have asked for clarification if there was any room for doubt.

And I would have kicked off, too!

Itisraining · 15/10/2016 20:25

Yes it was very snidey, Linda and a little funny too, you are a little off the mark. I am baffled how you can make that sweeping assumption.

Itisraining · 15/10/2016 20:28

Thanks again all (apart from the bitchy ones) It has been an eye opener but must go now.

monkeywithacowface · 15/10/2016 20:31

I'm confused you said one came with garlic bread and one with garlic ciabatta and specified to the waiter you wanted the one with the garlic bread. Yet you then say you didn't know the large one even existed? So why would you specify which one you wanted if you didn't know the other existed?

CauliflowerSqueeze · 15/10/2016 20:31

Could I clarify something?

Was the menu you were given the "light bites" one, or were those choices just part of the main menu?

If it was a separate menu, YWDNU.

If it was the same menu, it was up to the waiter to confirm which size you wanted, and you were also not being unreasonable to query it.

Overall, the meal was hugely over priced in any case.

Smartleatherbag · 15/10/2016 20:32

What a fuss over the a plate of pasta Grin

Sciurus83 · 15/10/2016 20:32

YABU. The standard meal is the regular portion. You didn't specify you wanted the smaller one apart from an ambiguous reference to garlic bread or ciabatta, "the small one please" is how you do that. You got the main meal, didn't complain, ate it, then wouldn't pay for it?! Um, ok....
