That my period has come back at 8 weeks despite EBF

I'm annoyed, this was supposed to be a benefit of breastfeeding. I'm ebf every four hours including at night and had my first period at 8 weeks postpartum and how have another 2 weeks later. GP says it's not an infection or retained products and that some women just have bad luck!!! I was looking forward to no periods for months not one very two flipping weeks! Weve got through craked nipples, masters and a tounge tie and I thought things were on the up and to top it off I am supposed to be going to a spa tomorrow for a treat (and have painstaking expressed three bottles for my husband to give while I'm there) and now I need to go buy tampax, why me! (Sorry to go on needed a good rant, realise that there are much bigger problems out there)

DD1 fed every 2 hours on the dot. DD2 every 3.

Bastard period was back after 4 weeks on the dot.

I am angry for you. So unfair.

GreenandWhite · 11/10/2016 08:15

It might be just the once. AF came back at 8-10 weeks psi-partum despite dbf but then not again until about 10 months.

dylsmimi · 11/10/2016 08:18

That is a pain!
Enjoy the spa but you may need to take your bread pump with you - I left ds1 for an afternoon sat in a hot tub which was lovely but the warm water and missed feed meant I was in so much pain with engorged breasts - I had to hold my arms wide to drive home so they didn't touch my boobs and run into the house and grab the pump!!

OwlinaTree · 11/10/2016 08:30

You poor thing! I'm one of the lucky ones, no period till one month after completely stopping bf at 13 months. Part of the reason I stopped was because we wanted to try again and I was concerned they were never coming back! This time I might just keep feedingWink

plugitinsilly · 11/10/2016 08:32

I ebf both of mine. With dc1 my period came back at 8 weeks then nothing til dc1's 1st birthday. With dc2 nothing til 14mths.

You might not have another for a while op.

TwinkleMumsie · 11/10/2016 08:39

I had one period about 8 weeks pp then haven't had one since and they are 9 months old

TriJo · 11/10/2016 08:54

Every 4 hours? 6 month old here who still wants boob every 2 hours...

dustarr73 · 11/10/2016 09:22

Be glad they came back,at least now you can sort contraception out.

Tellmewhyy · 11/10/2016 09:27

I have never met someone who's period stopped when breastfeeding.
I feel like the rarity goes the other way.

Buggeritimgettingup · 11/10/2016 09:34

Mine have all been breast fed for at least 18 months and my period has come back every single fooking time at around 8 weeks then had a gap of 2 or 3 months but sort contraception out asap(there is a 15 month gap between number 2 and 3!!).

blueshoes · 11/10/2016 09:39

My babies were small and boobmeisters. They loved to sleep on me with my boob in their mouths. I am sure my periods stayed away until at least we started to wean if not longer.

My very unscientific analysis is that periods will come back once it is no longer exclusive bf-ing but it might return even before that.

AGruffaloCrumble · 11/10/2016 09:40

Don't speak too soon. I had a period at 6 weeks PP and then nothing. It's been six months now. Bliss!

Callipygian · 11/10/2016 09:48

Mine came back at 11 weeks, EBF, tongue tie etc. Sound v similar. Im pretty sure its lowered my milk supply which is really upsetting. Were at 4.5 months now but he's dropped down 2 centile lines despite seeming fine.

with my daughter (who followed the 75 line all the way) my periods didnt come back till around 6 months.

ragz134 · 11/10/2016 09:49

I was ebf every few hours, not only did periods return PDQ but I got pregnant 4 months after birth! Health visitor didn't believe me when I said I felt pregnant, she said very unlikely as I was breastfeeding!

FoxMulder · 11/10/2016 09:53

Ah, bad luck. I got 27 months!

Youremywifenow · 11/10/2016 10:16

Yes, period back here after 9 weeks EBF, with DS it was 3 weeks and was still bleeding from the birth as well.

I've noticed my supply drops just before period starts as well and DD gets spots. She gets fussy round ovulation as well.

It really sucks.

Neverpeelmushrooms · 11/10/2016 11:14

Mine came back at 10 weeks. Then had 7 weeks without, then back to monthly from then. Except I took the map 4 weeks ago and have been bleeding on and off for the past 3 Angry

Ebf baby who fed at least 2 hourly night and day.

With my 2nd I had 10 months off so was expecting the same again Hmm

MommaL · 11/10/2016 11:18

I was EBF every 2 hours day and night and my period returned at 8 weeks. It sucked. I feel your pain.

minipie · 11/10/2016 11:29

I think we all vary. Doubt it has much to do with your feeding every 4 hours (though agree that is lucky at 8 weeks!)

I EBF every 3 hours day, 4 hours night and then from about 16 weeks it was 4 hourly in the day and not at all at night (EBM bottle instead) ... my period didn't return till 8 months.

elliejjtiny · 11/10/2016 11:38

My period came back at 6 weeks with all 5 of mine despite EBF every couple of hours at least. Before some of the bottle feeding mums at baby group with DS1. Not impressed at all.

Branleuse · 11/10/2016 11:40

I was exclusively breastfeeding and got my period back very early, then was pregnant again by the time ds was 12 weeks, so be careful x

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 11/10/2016 12:10

OP, one the bright side you can have another baby while still breastfeeding, should you want them close together. I breastfed for over 2 years and it didn't come back. Even when I was down to one feed per day it didn't come back! I had to completely stop and then it took another week. I only stopped so we could ttc again. Stupid period. Where was it when I needed it?

Stevefromstevenage · 11/10/2016 13:26

Apparently there is a correlation between frequency of feeding and return of periods and apparently use of a dummy affects it too so it is not just feeding, all comfort needs being met at the breast reduce fertility and menstruation.

This thread however goes to show how useless and unreliable BF is as a contraceptive.

Crunchymum · 11/10/2016 13:30

My periods came back when DD was about 18m? So i didn't have a period for 27 months all in. Was fab.
