Why are boys clothes on the high street so boring?!

Soubriquet · 10/10/2016 19:04

Went coat shopping today.

Got dd a lovely coat from Next. Nice quick and simple.

Now to hunt for a boys coat. Why are they all blue or covered in cars?!!

I found a lovely one in GAP. A pale grey with dark grey patches...£49.99!! No chance.

Ended up getting an army green colour one from Marks and Spencer's.

Why are bright colours not seen in boys clothes on the high street? I say high street because I know you're going to provide me a lot of links for boden and boden prices.

H&M, Boots and John Lewis are good for non-blue-and-covered-in-cars boys clothes.

As for girls clothes; if your DD rejects pink, sparkles, leggings, dresses, skirts, pinafores, princesses, cartoons, glitter and open shoes, there is very little choice of girls clothes. Equally, she doesn't want cars covered in cars and skulls (although dinos are ok).

The Little Bird range at Mothercare is excellent for boys and girls.

Dressing my 8 year old DS who is Age 10-11 in height is proving tricky. He doesn't favour the micro-gangster-clubber style of many pre-teen clothing designers.

Soubriquet · 10/10/2016 19:45

Nearest mothercare in the city shut down Angry

Our local boots don't do clothing.

H and m in the city not here but yes they do do lovely clothing and reasonable priced too

Primark have loads of bright t-shirts, not high quality but only £1.40.

StarlingMurmuration · 11/10/2016 07:43

Yes, it's so annoying. Just a wall of blue, khaki and burnt orange in most places. DS is just starting to care what we put him in, and the stuff he gets most enthusiastic about is things with bright colours.

WerewolvesNotSwearwolves · 11/10/2016 07:45

Agree with PP, Little Bird is brilliant. I don't have easy access to mothercare either so can't see in real life but I've loved what I've bought. Not a sludgy dinosaur in sight! All lovely bright colours. I've found Debenhams to be dreadful for this. Walls of pink or blue and not an interesting thing among them.

queenc81 · 11/10/2016 07:46

I only shop at pumpkin patch for my boys, fab selection. Hate the high street for boys. X

swizzlestar · 11/10/2016 07:48

For coats I tend to buy Mountain Warehouse /Peter Storm type. We've had red, bright blue and just been given a hand me down green one. I buy the ones with a detachable fleece, they're really good.

Otherwise I like H&M and M &S do really good brightly coloured long sleeved t-shirt tops for a few ££'s.

gunting · 11/10/2016 07:48

I hate this. I often buy my son things from the 'girls' section and he wears a lot of stuff from the Little Bird range. He wears the jazzy leggings from jojo maman too but only because they are on offer:

I'm fairly sure you live in near me! Grin I have the same issue and tbh do most my DC clothes shopping online. Check the returns before you buy, most are free from a collect+. It does suck though I used to love clothes shopping for dd! I get most of them from next, m&co, h n m and George Asda. Sainsbury's sometimes have some nice bits too.

Soubriquet · 11/10/2016 08:06

Big outdoor shopping mall, 3 words with S F G?

It's because shops don't want you to be able to hand down your boy's clothes to a potential sister, and vice versa, because that would mean they sell fewer clothes. That's why the sludgy colours - people are likely to see them as masculine, and reject them for girls. If you look at girls clothes, you will also find that lots of them that look unisex at first glance have a little heart or flower somewhere. That's also why so many boys clothes feature monsters, sharks and other creatures with sharp teeth, bones and skeletons etc. Anything to put parents off passing them on to their girls.

Reckoning · 11/10/2016 08:25

I think that's the one! Did you go to the pp last Friday? Grin

Soubriquet · 11/10/2016 08:29

No. Haven't been for a few weeks.

Fat face has just opened up though

I love this coat hat I saw recently in M&Co:-

Jellybean83 · 11/10/2016 09:12

I just got DS his winter jacket from Tresspass, it is blue but it's a really bright blue, £25 reduced from £50, warm, waterproof and wind proof. He has a bright yellow rain coat from M&S as well. I have no issue putting typical boy colours on DS but I like the colours to be bright.

NoCapes · 11/10/2016 09:16

Mothercare macs are lovely, there are twin boys near me that have them - one yellow, one bright red, they look adorable

However Little Bird is awful and I'm baffled by its appeal - you can wear bright colours without looking like bad 70s rejects, just awful!

I actually find it easier shopping for boys than girls
I hate girls clothes! It's either tutus and sickly baby pink (both of which DD won't wear) or once she goes up a size it's mini grown up clothes - crop tops and stuff
She just wants to be comfy like her brothers Confused!!

Sirzy · 11/10/2016 09:16

Costs I always get in the sale for the next years. I have two lovely gap coats in the cupboard ready for ds that were about £20 each.

GreyBird84 · 11/10/2016 09:23

I agree OP.
I get a lot for DS from Asda but I really struggle to get the things I want in his size! 2-3yr old seems to sell out so quickly.

Primary good for comfies but a Gd coat is a necessity.

I like jojo maman Bebe which isn't the cheapest around but their sales are great. I got DS a coat in their Christmas sale last year for this year £59 down to £29.

I love Toby tiger too & sometimes push the boat out on it - and everyone always comments so I know it was worth splashing out on to have something that's not next!

PinkSquash · 11/10/2016 09:23

I'm really struggling to find clothes for DS1- he's 10 but in a 13-14 and the choice is almost non existent for him. We don't want twatty slogans and stuff, thank God he normally lives in football stuff, it's expensive, but it's fairly decent quality

sianihedgehog · 11/10/2016 09:25

Oh my god, seriously. What child ever said "yay! Gray and brown are my favourite colours!"

And what about road safety? I am NOT putting my wee toddler in a plain dark coat in winter when he is going to the childminder before it's light out!

Buglife · 11/10/2016 09:27

H&M is good. Based on this thread I'm getting that lovely yellow Parka from M&Co! I wanted the Zara one linked further up but it's from 4 years and DS is 2, but is large so could get away with a 3 year old in M&Co. I adore him in yellow!

BowieFan · 11/10/2016 10:02

I am quite happily at the age where I can send DS1 and DS2 to get their own clothes whilst I go and have a wine coffee.

I just shoo them in the general direction of H&M, Topman and Burton and hope they come out with something alright. They usually do.

missyB1 · 11/10/2016 10:10

I've given up trying to buy nice clothes for my 8 year old ds that don't cost a fortune, I've accepted I just have to pay more and buy less. It makes me so cross, my friends with girls can go to the supermarkets and get lovely clothes, but the clothes there for boys are just awful!

The other option is eBay where I get lots of second hand Joules / Mini boden/ white company / Gap.

FoxesOnSocks · 11/10/2016 10:16

Clothes wise I can't help (13 years of trying to discover a place that sell non boring boys clothes (and a choice).

Though Decathlon has decent coats - got several nice coloured ones there.

imwithspud · 11/10/2016 10:33

Totally agree with this! And don't get me started on girls shoes, a lot of the designs are so impractical. It seems like you can only get a good variety if you pay ridiculous designer prices for it.

I think clothing designers/manufactures need to get with the times and offer more of a variety for both genders. I'm sick of bloody floral prints.
