To expect to be paid more than half? (Pic included)

Background: I'm a home baker using decent/top quality ingredients in my cakes, friends and family buy off me for special events and am trying to kick start a little baking business from home ( after receiving loads of compliments and encouragement which I'm thankful for!) A friend has requested a cake (pictured) and offered well below the asking price knowing what quality I use and usually the one to berate others if they take the mick when it comes to price. I don't over charge and usually find I've undrecharged when adding up costs ( new to this). How much would you expect to pay for this cake? I'm just feeling a little upset really, I love her and will still make it just surprised at asking to pay less than half. I understand mates rates and all...
Before you ask
Yes she can afford it
I don't buy wholesale ingredients
No I didn't stick to my price (out of shock)

OP did the cost include the use of your hands hence the lack of update? Grin

RockinHippy · 10/10/2016 20:26

Its beautiful BTW

£150+ depending on the ingredients in the actual cake (some are boozy ones that cost much more to make) & where you live

YADNBU, your friend is taking the pee, but I bet I could beat you on pee takers when it comes to cakes.

I do the same as you, I have won a few awards too & make some quite elaborate designs too

A good friends dad was having a big birthday celebration & they needed a cake, he is one of DDs GPs & he often does us favours, lets call him D, so I decided to return the favour & design & make a large, elaborate birthday cake for free - for our friend D & as a gift from us to his Dad, it was offered in passing when a group of us were out together - this included his sister F who can be a pushy mare

Next thing I know, F has taken over & is telling me exactly what the cake will look like & what will be in it really naff & telling me she will be giving me £25 for doing it as it will be a gift from herHmm

To this day I don't think she understands why I told her to bugger offConfused

Well played, op.

MsJudgemental · 10/10/2016 20:27

Please don't refer to it as a 'little' business. It will be your business and it will soon get bigger. Don't devalue yourself before you even start! As someone else said, I'm also a tutor and friends pay exactly the same as anyone else. You are running a business, not a charity!

ZippyNeedsFeeding · 10/10/2016 20:27

Oh I love cake wrecks! that's my evening doing the accounts cancelled now!

MargotFenring · 10/10/2016 20:28

Where did you go OP? We want to know!

Garthmarenghi · 10/10/2016 20:29

Dunno OP. Tell us.

Five thousand of your English pounds?

hippydippybaloney · 10/10/2016 20:30

If she's on a budget you should have made her some lovely cupcakes instead.

What the fuck? There was no cake was there?

redisthenewblack · 10/10/2016 20:31

I hope this isn't going the same way as that cunting safe!

Well played op!!

hoddtastic · 10/10/2016 20:33

£150 for a ruddy cake? Tell her to get to Waitrose or Marksies.

January87 · 10/10/2016 20:33

Do not do mates rates in future. Any mate will pay you what you're asking because they know you're worth it.

DeepfriedPizza · 10/10/2016 20:34

Op is a baking equipment supplier and is hoping all this cake chat will boost sales.

Mindfields · 10/10/2016 20:35

12 pages, no big reveal and I haven't given up hope (yet)

Two groats and a chicken? (It feels we've been waiting for centuries)

ArmySal · 10/10/2016 20:36

Relieved I've just skimmed through the thread for OP's non existent update rather than read it all.

ICuntSeeYourPoint · 10/10/2016 20:38

Cancel the fucking cheque! I mean how much was the fucking cake?

JellyBelli · 10/10/2016 20:38
  1. That isn't a photo of OP's cake, its off the interwebs.
  2. OP never did the big reveal. No one knows how much was offered for a similar cake.

Thank you for your patience. In the meantime, No Ragrets!
