AIBU to expect a refund from this craft lady?

There is a craft lady who has a Facebook page. She does Christmas boxes (they're lovely) and I brought one from my son. She then showed me some of her other makes that are Christmas themed, so I could save on the postage (as these other bits were not being put up until November) so I thought that was nice of her.

Before anyone says Santa is naff, don't bother Grin we love Santa in this house! She had these 'milk for santa' things, that she specificity said she had made them, etc. They were £5. My stuff arrived, all fine.

About a week later, I go into a shop similar to Poundland (everything very cheap) there they were £1... I brought one just so I could compare it, so I was 100%.

It is the exact same thing.

I message her and tell her and she goes "yeah, so?" Hmm and she explains that I never specifically asked if she made it!? Yet she clearly sold it to me as "these handcrafted bottles", I didn't really see the need for me to then ask as she has already stated it!

AIBU to want a refund? Angry

You'll not get a refund but I would damn well make sure you're one of the last to be had by her by via Facebook by making a post in the local FB sales pages. Does your area have a sales site feedback page? They're great for getting the word out on dodgy dealers. Yes she didn't specifically say SHE handcrafted them but she made it seem like she did.

ChocolateWombat · 09/10/2016 17:47

I wouldn't even go so far as to say 'you've been had' - it's not as extreme as that. You've simply paid a higher price than you needed to. Most goods can be bought in a variety of locations for different prices. We have to do our research BEFORE buying to find the cheapest.

You have no right to ask for a refund.

The nature of selling is that the seller buys the goods at one price and sells at a higher one. That's how they make money and is perfectly legitimate. Perhaps the seller you bought from DID buy in Poundland and then sell on...perfectly legitimate.

expatinscotland · 09/10/2016 17:47

Since when does British Santa get fucking milk, anyhow? Scottish Santa gets a dram of whisky and a mince pie.

JustCallMeKate · 09/10/2016 17:51

Scottish Santa gets a dram of whisky and a mince pie.

Not in this house, we leave the bottle and a bottle of baileys Grin

phillipp · 09/10/2016 17:54

Santa never gets milk here. It's usually baileys, which also happens to be what I drink. Lucky that! Grin

expatinscotland · 09/10/2016 17:56

And Bailey's is . . . whisky with creme. Much better than milk.

Bluetrews25 · 09/10/2016 18:01

So all those of you leaving Santa alcohol are happy for him to drink and drive?!
And clatter around the next house like a drunken eejit?

phillipp · 09/10/2016 18:02

Santa doesn't drive. We all know it's all down to the reindeer. He is just the 'face' of the operation for advertising purposes. Grin

expatinscotland · 09/10/2016 18:03

Yeah, I'm okay with that. He's probably blootered by the time he gets to ours, but at least I haven't left him a plastic bottle from China with fecking milk in it that I paid a fiver for.

YuckYuckEwwww · 09/10/2016 18:05

Santa gets gin&tonic down south Grin - true story!

WeAllHaveWings · 09/10/2016 18:07

Our Santa usually gets a can of Guinness, no mince pie. Reindeer sometimes gets a carrot.

ds(12) doesn't believe in Santa anymore, but still put out the refreshments last year before thinking about it.

He must be full by the time he reaches Scotland, but still always manages to finish it.

DayToDayGlobalShit · 09/10/2016 18:11

The thing is, you saw the item and were happy to pay £5 for it. You were pleased with the item until you saw if much cheaper elsewhere.

It happens to all of us at some time or other.

I think you have to suck it up and if it annoys you so much, then next time do your research on something.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 09/10/2016 18:14

Leave a review.

Also email her and say "That's a pity. Had a big birthday party the other day and the Xmas box was out and loads of mum friends asked where they were from. Will tell them all to find someone honest to buy from instead. Hope you enjoy the £4 you made conning me - probably cost you £200 in sales. All the best."

YuckYuckEwwww · 09/10/2016 18:19

The thing is, you saw the item and were happy to pay £5 for it. You were pleased with the item until you saw if much cheaper elsewhere.

The item hasn't changed just because you've found it cheaper elsewhere, if it was worth £5 to you when you bought it then that's what it was worth. Presumably you'll still use and enjoy it so what's the refund for?

user1473454752 · 09/10/2016 18:21

I bought alight for my sons bedroom off ebay, it cost £10 last week I went into b&ms and saw it for £2.99 my fault for not shopping around.

HermioneJeanGranger · 09/10/2016 18:22

Thing is, lots of the stuff available in Poundland is available for more money elsewhere - the sweets, colouring books, DVD's, toothpaste - you name it, you can find it for more money in Tesco.

You bought as seen. You were happy to pay a fiver, so you can't complain and ask for a refund because it's cheaper somewhere else - she's a Facebook seller, not a supermarket with a price guarantee!

PuppyMonkey · 09/10/2016 18:23

Is her page called SawYouComing? Grin

BinRaidingRaccoon · 09/10/2016 18:23

Did you pay by PayPal goods and services? That's the only way I can think of for getting a refund.

Sophsy · 09/10/2016 18:26

I make clothes and sell through Facebook. I use words like 'handcrafted' 'custom' 'bespoke' and all the other buzz words...but I make the clothes at my house, from fabric.

There are various groups where you can name and shame the seller, groups where admins can help you negotiate a refund or support you through paypal claims. People like this woman make the rest of us look bad. Shitty customer service and scams like this put people off buying from small businesses, but most of us aren't out to scam anyone.

If she refuses to refund then file a paypal claim as "item not as described" show the messages where she said 'handcrafted' and attach photos from pound land.

Please don't be put of buying from small businesses, but don't be afraid to ask about how things are made - most people are willing to put work into a sale and will talk to you about personalisation etc. Another thing to check out is how many copyright infringements are on the page - inspired designs are one thing, but loads of disney on a page is either someone who hasn't researched it or has decided that fines and seizing of stock is worth the risk!

acasualobserver · 09/10/2016 18:27

Santa is for plebs. Father Christmas would never drink from the bottle.

reallybadidea · 09/10/2016 18:33

How long ago did you buy them? When you buy stuff on the internet you're allowed to return them within 10 working 10 days under distance selling regulations.

You could also speak to trading standards about whether she has broken any laws about description of goods. It doesn't necessarily matter what she said precisely if the intention was to mislead or deceive.

Kidnapped · 09/10/2016 18:34

No, jazzypants, you are not the only one wondering what a Christmas box is exactly.

Can't picture it.

YuckYuckEwwww · 09/10/2016 18:35

We got a new fiver on the first day they came out, woulda been a A1 serial number but that hadn't gone viral yet so we spent it
WIBU to go tell my local shop that they owe me £135 ? Grin

Somethings make you feel like kicking yourself, doesn't mean it's anyone else's fault

Obviouspretzel · 09/10/2016 18:35

She did nothing wrong. She sold you a product at a markup. Something that happens literally every single time you buy an item.

adogcalledbert · 09/10/2016 18:40

I think she's been shoddy.
I doubt you'll get a refund. Can you leave a review?
