Trying to choose a new bed and DH is driving me mad!

We have a divan which we've had since before we got married. I hate it. I want a wooden bed frame.

We went looking at the weekend and DH is being so fussy. He's 6ft tall and keeps moaning about beds with a footend. Thinks he'll be bashing his toes in his sleep.

Is he being unreasonable? Or me?

If his feet are near the bottom of the mattress in your current bed then he might be right to worry. I'm not keen on footends on beds anyway, the last one we had collected clothes (dh's) that would then get knocked to the ground when someone (dh again) brushed past.

Ceolas · 07/02/2007 12:48

never thought of that bran.

Distinct possibility in this house!

Most definately him... Too tall, not yout problem. at your new bed!!

CocoLoco · 07/02/2007 12:51

um, I wouldn't say that you're being unreasonable as such, but I can see his point

Kelly1978 · 07/02/2007 12:54

Can't you compromise and look at a bed with a footend but get a king size that will be a bit longer? I'm 5'11 and we don't have probs in a king. The other possibility is leather, which we have, so even if feet do bash the end, it's lovely and padded.

Ceolas · 07/02/2007 12:56

We are getting a kingsize. It's 6'3" I think.

OP posts:
Ceolas · 07/02/2007 12:59

6'6" apparently

Best way to tell if a bed is big enough for you both, is to lie side by side with elbows out and hands beneath your head.If your elbows touch the bed is too small. However this only deals with width......

Afraid my symps are with dh. I can only sleep on stomach with feet hanging off bottom of bed

Aderyneryn · 07/02/2007 13:03

A kingsize bed should solve the problem. They tend to be 6' 3" long (or longer?)

DH used to have this problem with our old double. We later got a KS wooden bedframe but opted for one without a footboard anyway.

bran · 07/02/2007 13:21

I think 6'6" could be quite short for a 6ft man. He won't have his head exactly at the top of the bed, so he'll loose a couple of inches there, and if he straightens one or both legs and has his foot slightly pointed then he probably would kick the footboard. That could be quite painful if he was having a dream about something that cause him to kick out hard.

Now that I think about it, you're being unreasonable. I think both of you have to sleep in it so you both should have the right of veto. (Are you annoyed that I think you're unreasonable? Because that would be unreasonable. Would it be unreasonable for me to get annoyed with you for getting annoyed with me for thinking you unreasonable? My head hurts thinking about this, am I being unreasonable to blame you for my head hurting? )

Ceolas · 07/02/2007 13:23

Lol bran. Actually you have convinced me more with the clothes gatherer argument!

Lilymaid · 07/02/2007 13:27

5' wide beds ate 6'6" long. 4'6" beds (standard double) are only 6'3" long. IKEA beds and mattresses (and other continental makes) are 200 cm long - which is 6'6".
My DH is only 5'11 and finds that 6'3" is too short for him so his feet would be hitting the footboard too.

JanH · 07/02/2007 13:28

I am 6' tall and I couldn't sleep in a bed with a footboard, even a kingsize one, so there you are!

Also, apart from the kicking-in-the-night thing that bran mentions, unless you have lots of space to walk around the foot you might bang into a tall footboard. (Or maybe I'm just clumsy!)

Ceolas · 07/02/2007 13:34

OK he wins

Think we are going for this

Lovely bed. Ours is very similar looking.

And it is nice not having a footboard to bump into.

pianist · 07/02/2007 14:11

We both like to hang our toes over the end of the bed.

Ceolas · 07/02/2007 14:39

We bought a Slumberland memory foam mattress online for £450. Same mattress was £659 in Bensons!

Buy a king size bed and he should be ok. We got a king size after I got fed up of my DH sleeping diagonally across our double bed. We tried a memory foam mattress and didn't get on with it at all, it smelt so strong and made me really warm in bed.

Skittlesss · 08/08/2017 11:30

It's been ten years... i am sure they've bought it by now!

fartsinbed · 08/08/2017 12:15

I'm 6' and the sole occupant of a king size. Still, my feet sometimes stick out the end. A bit of wood at the end of the bed is a non starter.
