I was reading about this on DS and was interested in your views. Been a longtime lurker- decided to bite the bullet and join so please don't bully me

Where's the biscuit smiley?

PickAChew · 05/10/2016 20:07

I think you need to crawl back under your rock if you mistake dismissal of an idea for a personal attack.

Pootles2010 · 05/10/2016 20:08

Because as said on other formum, it rather sounds like you want us to do your homework for you.

And I've already done ds's homework with him, I ain't doing yours too.

SaggyNaggy · 05/10/2016 20:09

Its a stupid idea that someone has proposed because the majority of leavers were older people, I believe.

Its bollocks. and I would rather put my trust in people that have lived and experienced life beyond their mothers apron strings than put my trust in the voting power of children that think they know everything but actually know fuck all.

user1475682162 · 05/10/2016 20:10

I'm not the same person as whoever started that thread. Just saying Smile

"When does this homework have to be handed in ??"

That's the second post on the digital spy thread.

Which again begins with someone asking for ideas. Not an actual proposal why change from 'one person one vote' would ever be a good idea.

Jinglebellsandv0dka · 05/10/2016 20:12

op you need to give more reasoning yourself. You can't just post a topic and expect people to do the work for you.

It's quite lazy posting.

Do you think they should be given 2 votes? If yes why? If no why?

user1475682162 · 05/10/2016 20:13

I saw the thread on DS- I'm not the person who made that thread. I thought it was a rather intriguing question so posted it on Mumsnet. Thanks for your kindnessSmile

Voting should absolutely be compulsory. I completely fail to understand why anyone would just not bother. Spoiling your ballot is surely a better (or at least recordable) protest non-vote in any case...

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 05/10/2016 20:14

I think the most intelligent animals should be allowed a vote.

Pigs. Pigs are intelligent. They should vote. Squirrels aren't particularly bright. No vote for them.

What do you think?

Discuss.

If you check earlier in The thread, you'll find I stated my own opinion. Thanks for your kindness

OP posts:
Flisspaps · 05/10/2016 20:15

No.

I think 16-17 year olds should be given the vote, voting should be compulsory and there should be a 'none of the above' option on ballot papers.

ilovesooty · 05/10/2016 20:18

Oh let's give left handed people two votes. Or people under five foot six. Or everyone who can touch the tip of their nose with their tongue.

This is ridiculous.

PiSeas · 05/10/2016 20:19

You posted in AIBU... What did you think would happen? If you posted in chat or politics perhaps you wouldn't have been so irked by the honesty. If you knew anything about the AIBU topic you'd know that there's not a softly-softly approach here.

Anyhow, nope the 18-24yr olds should not get 2 votes. Don't know why anyone would even think that's a good idea.

Unless you were looking for research material for a newspaper article or are closely affiliated with a political party testing the ground so to speak... Hmm

PickAChew · 05/10/2016 20:21

6 votes for me, then, sooty :) I'm a keggy handed short arse and can lick my nose.

thisisafakename · 05/10/2016 20:21

If you wanted to start a debate I suggest you start off by stating the reason why these people should get a double vote. Otherwise, it's not really a debate, is it?
Also, I have not read the DS thread, but it's idiotic to justify it on the basis that 18-24 year olds will be alive longer. Yes, they will be alive another 70 years perhaps. But a 35 year old might be alive another 60 years, a 45 year old 50 etc. All bloody long periods of time to be affected by whatever is being voted for. So that is a really stupid argument.

0pti0na1 · 05/10/2016 20:24

No, absolutely not.

All votes are equal, but some are more equal than others? A very slippery slope indeed...

I don't for one minute accept the idea that younger people's votes should be given extra weighting in elections. Many of those aged 18-24 will still be in full time education or living at home, and have very little experience of life in the real world. Even more so with 16-18 year olds, but that's another debate.

Democracy is one person, one vote.

ilovesooty · 05/10/2016 20:25

Pick Grin That's just greedy.

thisisafakename · 05/10/2016 20:25

Now I have read the DS thread. As you have found here, people dismissed it as a really dumb idea, which it is. So unless you come up with any decent reasons for this really stupid undemocratic system, it's hard to see any benefit in it whatsoever.

pigsDOfly · 05/10/2016 20:45

How can giving twice as many votes to all the young people, most of whom don't seem to actually want to vote anyway, going to fit into a democratic voting system?

It's a ludicrous idea OP and tbh I'm not sure quite how you actually expect to get a debate out of such a silly notion.

RortyCrankle · 05/10/2016 20:47

No, it''s an absurd idea and I very much hope 16/17 year olds are never given the vote.

LyraMortalia · 05/10/2016 20:54

I want two votes as I have a degree so obviously I'm more intelligent and my opinion worth more than those without a degree. Dh should get three votes as he's a decorated war veteran so has proved he's willing to give his life for others if need be. Bollocks to giving my dope smoking, not working out of education lazy arse step nephew two votes he hasn't bother to use his first one.

Realhousewivesofshit · 05/10/2016 20:58

Still makes no sense!

BreatheDeep · 05/10/2016 21:07

KingJoffrey Snakes shouldn't have a vote at all. You just can't trust them.
Dolphins are very smart. 5 votes for them. They might smudge the ballot paper a bit though.

So does anyone have a decent reason under 24s should have a vote? I mean, where did this idea come from originally?

FleurThomas · 05/10/2016 21:38

That would imply 18-24 year olds were more important to society than 24-40 year olds for example or pensioners, which isn't how a democracy should work. Everybody who is a citizen is equal in a democratic state & so they should each get an equal number of votes.
