To ask what your baby is wearing in bed at the moment

So we have started putting our 5 month old daughter to bed (cot, in our room) in a long sleeved vest and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. According to the gro bag website she only needs a vest and a 1.5 tog bag with a room temp of 22 degrees (this is what the temp is currently)

I worry this isn't enough - she already wakes up with cold hands, and I'm wondering if she needs more on. We sleep with a 10.5 tog duvet and I am sometimes cold

On the other hand, I don't want her to overheat. We live in a new-ish house

I'm just wondering what you have your babies in - should I leave her as she is...?

My son is 11 months and he has a cosy sleep suit with feet and a blanket. It's so hard to judge and it sounds a bit mean but I'd prefer him to be too cool and wake up for an extra layer than too hot.

popthisoneout · 04/10/2016 22:31

Vest, baby grow and a one tog grow bag. Seems about right.

AJ279 · 04/10/2016 22:31

Feel her chest or her back. If she's not clammy or boiling hot she's ok. Our house temp drops at night and DD is in a 2.5 tog sleeping bag and long sleeved top. If she feels warm I crack the window and leave it on latch. The guidelines are just that, my DD is super sweaty so gets hot easily and can't wear as many layers as recommended.

Best way is to just put your hand on her chest or back and you'll know.

PotatoBread · 04/10/2016 22:33

Long sleeved vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog grobag. I'm fecking freezing so am like you at the moment OP and don't think just a vest would be enough.

ralice · 04/10/2016 22:34

1 year old in a sleepsuit, scratch sleeves (Sad) and 1 tog sleeping bag. Around 19deg in his room at the mo.

Kpo58 · 04/10/2016 22:36

DD is wearing a (short sleeved) bodysuit, a sleep suit and 2 blankets (which she normally escapes from by the morning).

Babydontcry · 04/10/2016 22:37

13 week old is wearing short sleeved vest, sleep suit with mitts and two thinish blankets

MyDarlingWhatIfYouFly · 04/10/2016 22:37

It's totally normal for their hands to be cool, as other posters have said it's the temp of the back and chest that will give a better indication.

strawberrypenguin · 04/10/2016 22:42

Long sleeve vest and 1.5 tog bag. He's a hot baby though.

heatherwithapee · 04/10/2016 22:43

It's fine for hands to be cool. If baby is sleeping ok, they're probably warm enough. Definitely better to be tool cool than too hot.
That said, DS was always too cold if I went by the GroBag advice. It took us a long time to realise why he kept waking. Another layer and he was a much better sleeper.

CoffeeAtLukes · 04/10/2016 22:45

We're in Scotland so it's quite chilly here at the moment. She's in a long sleeve vest, a baby grow and a 3.5tog sleeping bag with arms. She runs cold. Unlike my eldest who sleeps naked with the covers flung off all year round.

I feel the back of her neck/upper back to see if she's warm enough.

Joinourclub · 04/10/2016 22:47

Sleep suit plus 2 blankets, 1 up to armpits and the other up to belly button.

sleepwhatsleep · 04/10/2016 22:48

My 11 week old has a vest, sleepsuit and a 2.5 tog grobag (sleeping bag).

During the day downstairs he has a vest and sleepsuit on without getting too hot. Upstairs I feel it's cold and my groegg thermometer (that is on top of the wardrobe, so up high where heat should be rising) says it's only 19 degrees.

I feel cold in a duvet with pajamas on.

sleepwhatsleep · 04/10/2016 22:50

His hands feel warm now but it was the same temp last night and by the morning his hands felt like icicles. He doesn't feel hot just warm.

Palegreenstars · 04/10/2016 22:53

19 degrees with a 5 month old. 1.5 tog and long sleeved vest. She does seem to get hot more easily than most though but def prefer too cold than too hot.

LouBlue1507 · 04/10/2016 22:54

My 10 week old is in a short sleeved vest, baby grow and thin blanket with holes in (mainly for comfort). Our bedroom temperature is about 23C.

Pistachiois50pmore · 04/10/2016 22:54

Our 8 month old is wearing a short sleeved body suit and a long sleeved sleepsuit. Sometimes bumped up to a long sleeved bodysuit under the sleepsuit if it's colder. No sleeping bag or blankets - he just lies on top of the covers. Room is about 20C.

Purplefrogshoes · 04/10/2016 22:57

Vest, sleep suit and 2.5 tog grobag. Our bedroom is very cold though

Champagneformyrealfriends · 04/10/2016 22:57

A short sleeved vest, sleepsuit and a 2.5 tog bag. DD cries if she's cold (6 months).

Starbright10 · 04/10/2016 23:02

Sleepwhatsleep - that's way too many clothes - you can't compare your temperature as your duvet isn't wrapped all round you like a sleeping bag is and also you aren't a baby! It's dangerous to have s baby too hot as they can't regulate their temperature

LBOCS2 · 04/10/2016 23:03

Our bedroom is 19 degrees with the window open so plenty of airflow. DD2 has a long sleeved vest or sleepsuit, plus two cellular blankets. I'm about to move her into a 2.5 tog bag - we'll see how it goes, as she's a wriggler. It might help.

gunting · 04/10/2016 23:10

How do you all get these babies in sleeping bags?! My son acts possessed if we attempt to put him in one. Confused

bippitybopityboo · 04/10/2016 23:11

My 3 month old has long sleeve vest and a 2.5 tog gro bag will change to a sleep suit when it's cooler

TwllBach · 04/10/2016 23:16

My Five month old is wearing a long sleeved sleep suit and a sleeping bag... Not sure what tog but it is just a cheap tesco one. He's also got two blankets. I worry about his hands though because they are always like blocks of ice!

sleepwhatsleep · 04/10/2016 23:18

starbright10 there's about 8 people on here who have their LOs in the same...
