..to be really worried about baby #3's 8 week injections?

So many more then when I had my other two a decade ago. That's so much more aluminum preservative to overload his system. Then there's the Men B which is VERY new and causes most babies to have a fever. Plus the rotavirus one - also new - with gastro side effects.

I'm tempted to put them off for a while or stagger them.

But then what if my baby caught one of this rare illnesses and became ill. I'd never forgive myself.

What are your thoughts Mumsnet?

It is always advised to give calpol with the Men B injection as it's very likely to cause a temperature spike. The nurses advice to give it straight after, then a further 2 doses 4 hours apart. They advise waking for it if the baby is asleep.

WinchesterWoman · 03/10/2016 19:51

Men B never came up for me. It's the other vaccinations where the Calpol advice has changed.

GoofyTheHero · 03/10/2016 19:52

well as they're all given together the advice now is to give calpol after them.

lovelilies · 03/10/2016 19:54

I found ibuprofen more effective in bringing (and keeping) DD2's temp down after the men B.

WinchesterWoman · 03/10/2016 19:56

It's such a lot, all at once.

EllsTeeth · 03/10/2016 19:57

Please do get your baby vaccinated. More anecdotes for you - my first had quite a high fever after his but was fine after a couple of days and some calpol. My second barely reacted and was totally fine. Vaccinations are important, to your baby's health and to the health of the wider population. You're doing the right thing getting her protection from a lot of horrible, potentially deadly diseases.

EllsTeeth · 03/10/2016 19:58

Winchester Woman please speak to an immunologist. Their systems are perfectly able to cope!

EllsTeeth · 03/10/2016 19:59

The babies' systems that is, not the immunologists...

Alabastard · 03/10/2016 20:01

Please vaccinate your baby. Please.

seri0usly · 03/10/2016 20:04

Whatever you decide I really don't think you should make that decision based on what people on mumsnet say?! That would be crazy! Do some proper research and decide based on the facts.

WinchesterWoman · 03/10/2016 20:04

I'm fine thank you Ells Teeth. We managed.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 03/10/2016 20:05

Had my DD done with no issues. Calpol given at the time of injection and you're advised to give 2 more doses later.
Your DC3 will be fine

EllsTeeth · 03/10/2016 20:05

What seri0usly says is true. For proper advice speak to an immunologist or a paediatrician in real life.

Flisspaps · 03/10/2016 20:09

I'd sooner run the tiny potential risk of side effects from vaccines than the higher potential side effects of the diseases they protect against.

AveEldon · 03/10/2016 20:16

My thoughts are that whooping cough is circulating in London so best to get that one done earlier rather than later (if you are in London)

WinchesterWoman · 03/10/2016 20:16

There are dissenting immunologists. Not many, but they are there.

LetsJunglyJumpToIt · 03/10/2016 20:22

I'd rather my children had a fever than meningitis.

TwigletsMakeMeViolent · 03/10/2016 20:26

It's risks vs benefit. Would you take the minuscule risk that something might go wrong from a vaccine, over the benefit of the vaccine - which is, protecting your baby from potentially fatal diseases?

It's a no brainer to me.

SpeakNoWords · 03/10/2016 20:26

Winchester can you explain about how aluminium that's injected has a different effect to ingested aluminium?

Alabastard · 03/10/2016 20:38

Re: whopping cough. I have the bloody pertussis virus right now. My DD hasn't picked it up from me. I can only assume that's because I had her bloody vaccinated!

TyrannosauraRegina · 03/10/2016 20:41

WinchesterWoman OP - none of the people ordering you to engage in a medical intervention with your child will be around to help if something goes wrong. Nor will the government - no compensation for vaccine injury under the age of two. The decision is yours, and yours alone.

But you'll be there if the opposite goes wrong, and her baby gets whooping cough, right?

LucyInTheSkyWithDonuts · 03/10/2016 20:42

Vaccinate your child. It is proven to protect them against numerous nasty diseases with minimal risk.

FleurThomas · 03/10/2016 20:49

To give you my mums example: she got us MMR and Tetanus because she personally knew unvaccinated people who had died/became disabled from all four. She got my little brother men B (it wasn't available for me at this point) because her best friend caught it at 40 and died in the space of a week. She didn't get any of us the Whooping Cough vaccine until I almost died from it and then she rushed the other siblings to get it done.

So I ask would you follow my mums example and wait until you know people have died/become disabled from these illnesses before you vaccinate? Or would you do your own research and ensure your kids are vaccinated appropriately in the first instance?

AuntDotsie · 03/10/2016 20:53

I'm firmly in the vaccinate camp, DS 15mo has had all his and has been fine apart from a few days of fever and sleepiness.

I do have a problem with 'do your own research' though - there are literally thousands if not millions of sites out there, with a range of biases and nobody has the time to go through them all. Your average layperson also lacks a lot of the scientific or medical expertise to understand primary sources like medical studies and their significance. It's a hugely complex subject and I'm not sure there are any easy answers. In the end, you trust doctors and public health bodies or you don't.

DownInFraggleRock · 03/10/2016 21:00

Men B can make kids pretty miserable afterwards, I'd definitely advise lots of calpol... still a million times better than the alternative! It also gives partial cover against Men W, which is emerging in the younger age group and has a death rate of 13%.... scary stuff
