Advert showing santa/fc isn't real

I can't quite believe that an advert like this would have been allowed ? Park christmas ad on the television this morning showing one families christmas eve at home, kids hang their stockings before bed then showing the mum filling them and eating the food left out for santa/Fc. Then goes on to show the kids catching this happening, any one else think this will be too much of a give away if it's watched by believing children ? Just not nessecary whatsoever I don't think.

Votefor - just tell your kids this:

"Well - some children don't believe in Father Christmas, so he can't come to them and bring them presents - but mums and dads don't want their children to be sad, so they fill the stockings instead. But you do believe in FC, so he will be bringing your presents!"

It's completely unreasonable for any Christmas advert to be shown in SEPTEMBER!! misses point of the thread

Shock sacrilege.

Not really. Wat will u complain about? That the advert was telling the truth?

'You have to believe in him and he will come' is what I will say.

And if they say its mum/dad etc 'Well, clearly they don't believe'

'I still believe'

I do believe in the Spirit of Santa!

Mum on the run - not ridiculous, ridiculous of the advertiser to think up such a thing maybe. John Lewis didn't have to ruin it all did they ? Poor advertising, park should rethink who they hire for next year's contract.

I firmly believed until about 8 and then pretended to for another couple of years!

I would have been gutted if I'd seen that advert as a child

Truffle piggy - me too i would have been devastated if I watched it and know mine would be the same way.

As I said, Votedfor - there are ways to deal with it, if a child learns somehow about FC - it doesn't have to be a disaster.

I think more children know than may be letting on...

I knew before I was six, as did pretty much all my friends at school, it was talked about.

However even at that age I was savvy enough to know that asking 'Santa' for a particular present, in a pleading 'it would make my Christmas soooo much' way was much more likely to go my way than asking Mum or Dad Grin

Or maybe I was just a particularly ruthless child.

Christmas ads ALREADY?!

You just tell your children that's what happens in Advert People's House. Your house is different.

If they notice, that is. That sort of implication often goes right over little kids' heads. Older children might get the inference but would have it sussed anyway.

Lidl will be selling reindeer steaks soon too. At small child eye level.

So, to firmly make sure your child has all Christmas illusions shattered, serve up reindeer steak whilst making sure this advert is on loop for about 2 hours.

it is awful I'm not sure how to go about making a complaint to the asa

I've successfully had adverts banned because of making outlandish and unproven/impossible claims.

I'm not sure how you'd persuade the ASA that any part of the advert you describe is in anyway untruthful?!

Gabsalot - no mine know where babies come from they've watched dumbo lots of times. But fc is a huge part of thousands upon thousands of children around the UKs beliefs and culture and it's this adverts tasteless and unimaginative.

I knew at 6. My 5 and 7 year olds have never believed.

I might start a campaign for more honest advertising like this. Might reduce the ridiculous consumer-fest to something halfway reasonable. The world's gone fucking mad.

We have the opposite problem. Every fucking kids programme in December tries to push Santa as real. Random strangers try and push it on children. Parents go absolutely barmy trying to create "magic" not noticing that we're surrounded by real magic and don't actually need to create it with piles and piles of Chinese plastic on some arbitrary stolen date.

We have months of basically avoiding television because of the annual greed-fest.

I don't understand why people get so worked up about this. Santa is not real.
I asked my parents outright at the age of 5, they told me the truth. It didn't spoil Christmas, I still played along with it well into my teens and it was still exciting and magical.
I don't lie to my kids. If they ask me questions about Santa, I just say "what do you think?" I'm not sure if they really believe or not, it doesn't really matter. They both absolutely love Christmas.

Santa was a bit behind schedule and gave the presents to Mum and Dad, on the doorstep, to put in the stockings. He didn't have time to eat the mince pies, so Mum and Dad ate them. It doesn't take much imagination really. It's called thinking on your feet. Although I don't know why.

Its a stupid idea to be honest because it can shatter a lot of kids dreams. They do believe till well after 5. If anything it would probably do the company damage.

Yeah, just because you choose not to believe or partake, let's ruin it for everyone else who does wish to. Hmm
