To not want hairdresser to do other peoples hair in between doing mine!?

New hairdresser. Had a colour on today which usually takes 30 mins (to develop, not including time it takes to put it on) unless i go under heat then it takes 20 minutes. Today she left me 1 hour 15 minutes and did two other clients in-between. I know it doesn't take 1 hour 15 minutes for my roots to set. Agh! Was in there 3 hours in total!

Norm in my experience. Hairdresser applies colour to client 1. Hairdresser deals with client 2. Junior washes colour off client 1. Hairdresser returns to client 1. When finished with client 2. Been the same in every hairdresser I have ever used and where I worked as a junior at 16.

Colour, cut and blow dry - yup 3 hours pretty normal.

Exactly the reason why I dumped my long term hairdresser recently. It's bad form and very rude.

Yep pisses me off too. Don't mind if they do something quick, but really resent spending hours in there because they are doing other people's in between. Get mine done by a mobile hairdresser now

I know they overlap customers but it bugs me too, lovely ladies but I feel like I'm almost an inconvenience and feel rushed. I now splat box dye for a 6th of the prize all over my bathroom Grin

As the daughter of two hairdressers this is completely normal. If they sat around twiddling their fingers waiting for pipes hour to process you would be paying a heck of a lot more for their time

Mine takes that long but my hairdresser has never done another client in between. TBH though I love my hairdresser and if she had time to do it, it wouldn't bother me. Eg dry trim, fringe type thing.

She's recently moved premises and things have speeded up a little as it's only her now, whereas we used to chat with the other hairdressers and clients, maybe get interrupted by deliveries and so on. Now there's not that kind of thing going on.

This is one of the many reasons I like my hairdresser - she runs her own salon, no other hairdressers and no juniors. So one customer at a time. We just chat while my colour is on, much nicer!

This is really normal ime. Whilst it's expensive to have your hair coloured, if you think about what your hairdresser makes for all those hours of work then i feel it's fair enough they squash what they can into a day.

FFS stop being a doormat and actually complain to the hairdresser about it. Like in real life.

Or accept it and moan about it to strangers online instead

Totally normal. My hair has been in much better nick since I had a lady come round to me to do it, precisely because they don't leave it on for too long to fit the next appointment.....

That's exactly what AIBu is for isn't it? To moan to strangers? Sounds like you are on the wrong forum if that's not what you're into?

I went to a salon where the stylist stopped halfway through cutting my hair to attend to her friend who came in and wanted a fringe trim.

I never went back.

not bad form if they can fit in another client without keeping you waiting/get someone else to wash it off, but that's taking the piss.

You should have complained at the time though - it's not good for the dye to be left on for double the normal time...

I'd be going elsewhere or home colouring.

It doesn't bother me but I once had to wait ages with my head over a sink and my neck hurt and I was freezing, I didn't go back there?

I wouldn't mind them attending to another client as long as it fitted in with the time that my colour was taking to develop. I think I'd be annoyed if I was kept much longer than necessary. I find it boring enough getting my hair done as it is.

Depends on how it's done... If they ask you or say do you mind whilst I eg ... And do it... You can say at the time or afterwards if you think it's rude or not. I'm generally not 100% bothered.

The one time I was, was I went to a trendy avante garde hairdresser in London, I was a regular client and had colour and a cut. Whilst I was there there was someone else who he deliberately took more time over than me... Eg did leave me waiting and not just whilst colour was on! These people were local business women on their way to an awards ceremony and you could tell he was "pushing out the boat" for them... And fawning over them. He also refused to do highlights (so I always had a semi permanent blonde colour) and once told me I was "getting a surprise" which was dark brown with blonde streaks - which I hated and had told him I didn't want brown ever before! I made him change that back.

I realised with his attitude that it wasn't just normal hairdresser making the most of their time but deliberately wasting and disregarding mine, so i left and gave him a bad review online!

I don't mind at all if they get on with someone else's hair for a bit, but wouldn't be happy if they left a colour on longer than necessary. I wouldn't want to pay more just so that they didn't trim someone else's hair while my colour was developing.

It can damage your hair if the dye is left on too long so YANBU.

Left my regular hair salon due to colour being left on too long. I agree with others that it's OK to do another job whilst colour develops but in this salon the hairdressers chatted so much to each other they would switch off dryers mid styling while I was starting to feel the burn! Twice they all hovered round the sink to tell me I might be on the verge of an allergy!!

^ Only bleach will damage hair if it's left too long, colour oxidises after 45 minutes so won't go any lighter/ darker after that time and won't damage the hair if left longer

Don't most colours contain bleach though as colours only work if your hair is also bleached unless you have very blonde hair

YANBU. I dumped a hairdresser for doing this. Only in my case, I was only having a cut and blow dry. The final time, he left me for half a bloody hour while he went and finished off someone who was having their hair dyed.

It IS annoying...

YABU to expect them to not continue working whilst your colour develops under normal haidressing circumstances.

YANBU to be annoyed your colour was left on to long because hairdresser saw to two other clients.

I've been the other side as well though. Gone in for my cut and blow dry. Been left every five minutes so they can see to another client who is having a colour, but I just accept they are managing their customers as best they can. And if it is an independent hairdressers I certainly don't begrudge them wanting to ensure maximum profit.

2rebecca- no, colours contain peroxide not bleach. You can go up to 3 shades lighter with just peroxide, any lighter than 3 shades then you need to bleach first and then add colour (dusting off my old hairdressing knowledge from moons ago!)
