IABU but WTF?

Famalam13 · 28/09/2016 13:50

OK so I know IABU as the thought behind this is very kind.

FIL and his DW are coming to visit this weekend. They have offered to make a lasagna (the DW is Italian) and have sent a list of ingredients for us to buy. This includes 8 balls of mozzarella, an entire block of cheddar, 8 boxes of lasagna sheets and 750g of mince (plus a lot of tomato). This will make two trays.

I don't eat meat so will have to sort out something for myself and DS is 8mo so will eat hardly any. DH is on SW so will have a tiny portion.

Surely that amount of lasagna for 3 people is insane?! Also am a bit put out that I have been ignored, feeling a bit sidelined in my own house.

Amalfi sono d'accordo Grin

gratesnakes · 28/09/2016 16:50

Are you sure she's a real Italian? All the Italians I know are total purists about their cuisine and would never use cheddar. Is she who she says she is??

Famalam13 · 28/09/2016 16:59

The plot thickens grate! Apart from the immediate aftermath of DS' birth (when I was a bit distracted) I have only seen her at big family gatherings so have taken everyone's word on her Italianess.

I'm being punished. My kids have been pestering all week for lentil lasagne and I've been too lazy to make it. Now I really, really want lasagne!

Famalam13 · 28/09/2016 17:06

If your DC would like to send appreciation to me Zippy I am fond of chocolate and will be sure to share them with the possibly not Italian over caterer Grin

allegretto

Down south has mozzarella eggs and sausages in it. No besciamella but

Amalfimamma · 28/09/2016 17:23

Hastalapasta

With the vaffanculo? 😆😇

Viviene · 28/09/2016 17:44

Damn all of you, we're now having lasagne tonight.

FeelingSmurfy · 28/09/2016 17:47

Sainsburys frozen vegetarian mince is miles better than quorn

That mix of ingredients and quantities just don't add up, I'm not sure what the lasagna would have ended up like, other than huge!

BillSykesDog · 28/09/2016 18:08

Maybe it's the Italian version of the legendary Mumsnet chicken that can feed a family of six for a month month?

allegretto · 28/09/2016 19:37

Amalfimamma yeah, but southern lasagna isn't real lasagna Grin

Amalfimamma · 28/09/2016 20:31

allegretto

I sorta agree with you seeing as I prefer the Emilia one

But don't be insulting us terrone........😆😅😃

HeyOverHere · 30/09/2016 01:06

Sounds like they're making enough for everyone to nosh on for a few days, or so you can freeze it for later. If you're okay with that idea, then let them sally forth! Otherwise, pick up half and let them know why.

Just remind them that you don't eat meat, and suggest you make one of them (or half of it) meat-free. You can halve the mince, divvy up the sauce into two parts before mixing mince into half, and use ricotta, tofu, or whatever you want in the other half. That way you're sure to get a healthy bit of what sounds like a delicious pasta meal.

LilQueenie · 30/09/2016 01:17

I would buy the quorn mince and just state that is what you normally buy as you are veggie.

avamiah · 30/09/2016 01:27

Either tell them straight or don't.
Decide how important this is in your life.

JessieMcJessie · 30/09/2016 02:16

Er, RTFT avamiah. They did exactly that.

avamiah · 30/09/2016 02:19

JM,
But they don't seem to know she doesn't eat meat.

lizzieoak · 30/09/2016 02:29

Maybe they think it's helpful to produce masses for the freezer? Not sure about the vegetarian thing - my ex-in-laws are now somewhat aged but since the 1990's have been able to grasp that I don't eat meat. So pretty sure it's rude unless your dh is one of those husbands who lives in fear of upsetting everyone but you?

Famalam13 · 30/09/2016 08:22

Thanks all :) DH explained that as he is on SW he would prefer to make something and they seem perfectly happy with that.

They are aware that I don't eat meat, I haven't the entire time they have known me but SIL sometimes doesn't eat meat and sometimes does so maybe they think I am equally flexible.

Damn it!

NoFamalam YADNBU, but they are. How rude. Ridiculous amounts too.
Your DH has done the right thing. Why on earth should you go along with all that faff, not to mention the state your kitchen will be in, with tomato and béchamel sauce from one end of kitchen to the other, when you won't even be able to eat the fruits of their labour?
They should bring one ready prepared if they are so fussy. Wink

StrawberryQuik · 30/09/2016 09:41

I'm clearly a baaad Italian as I've never made my own pasta to make lasagna Blush

I once made my own gnocchi tho.

JessieMcJessie · 02/10/2016 16:29

OP can you please report back after the visit and tell us if she is a real Italian or some sort of Mama Dolmio wannabe born and bred in Cincinnati or somewhere?

Famalam13 · 02/10/2016 17:15

Visit is over. Unfortunately she was violently sick due to reducing her meds and spent the visit in bed so I am none the wiser! I do know her dad is from Sicily. She did snuggle a bottle of our alcohol out with her when she left!
