IABU but WTF?

OK so I know IABU as the thought behind this is very kind.

FIL and his DW are coming to visit this weekend. They have offered to make a lasagna (the DW is Italian) and have sent a list of ingredients for us to buy. This includes 8 balls of mozzarella, an entire block of cheddar, 8 boxes of lasagna sheets and 750g of mince (plus a lot of tomato). This will make two trays.

I don't eat meat so will have to sort out something for myself and DS is 8mo so will eat hardly any. DH is on SW so will have a tiny portion.

Surely that amount of lasagna for 3 people is insane?! Also am a bit put out that I have been ignored, feeling a bit sidelined in my own house.

I'm sure it will be delicious Dude although I will have to take DH's word for it. Perhaps I should send a portion to everyone who comments on this thread Grin

Hmm. See now there's a business idea. Grin

MouldyPeach · 28/09/2016 14:05

My Italian grandmothers lasagne used a lot of sheets, more than the 2 layer jobs usually found in recipes, ready meals and restaurants. It was beautiful, really solid and at least 12 layers deep with a thin layer of sauce between each sheet. So perhaps 8 boxes wasn't a typo :)

Amalfimamma · 28/09/2016 14:06

If she asked for 8 mozzarella balls she means 8 boxes of lasagne. But to be honest 750g of meat isnt that much.

How many bottles of passata does she want?

Famalam13 · 28/09/2016 14:07

Interesting mouldy! How many people would one lasagna serve? Am getting worried they are bringing all their friends with them!

Yep, like mouldy, I had an Italian grandmother and she used a lot of lasagne sheets. You could cut it like a cake it was that solid Grin

She also used to put boiled egg in it!

Famalam13 · 28/09/2016 14:08

3 X tomatoes and 2 X puree. 2 X onion and 1 X garlic. 6 pints of milk and one tub of margarine!

BigApple11 · 28/09/2016 14:10

That's one big lasagne...!

StStrattersOfMN · 28/09/2016 14:11

EIGHT boxes? Dear God, I don't even use one box for 4, and I'm known for over feeding Shock

Scarydinosaurs · 28/09/2016 14:11

Being Italian doesn't automatically mean this is going to be amazing lasagne. I'm English and I can't make decent Yorkshire pudding or roast potatoes.

NorksAreMessy · 28/09/2016 14:11

You would need to cook this in a Belfast sink!

allsfairinlove · 28/09/2016 14:12

Idea of making one Quorn tray is excellent!

KitKats28 · 28/09/2016 14:12

I don't see how it's kind to assemble an enormous, expensive dinner that you can't eat and don't want, and then make you pay for it. It's ludicrous.

CatNip2 · 28/09/2016 14:14

I think they are using your ingredients to do a bulk batch and will take the rest home for some other event, bet you a slice of lasagne!

Amalfimamma · 28/09/2016 14:14

Famalam13

Tell her nicely with a big smile on your face "vaffanculo, tu e il tuo cazzo di lasagna falsa"

It looks like she needs the milk for the besciamella but if she uses besciamella she doesn't need mozzarella. She's making you enough lasagne for all of 2017 and if you don't eat meat I'd take it as an insult as there are many vegetarian dishes in the Italian cuisine that she could make.

ParanoidGynodroid · 28/09/2016 14:15

Eight sheets of lasagne and 8 oz of Mozzarella, surely?

I don't think it kind either. I'd sooner Dave all that expense and wasted food, and cook something myself.
Perhaps they're planning to take a stack home with them.

Budgiebonbon · 28/09/2016 14:15

YANBU - by my quick rough reckoning that is getting on for £25 in ingredients- at Sainsbury's. Is your FiL reasonable/understanding enough to have a quiet word?

But then Lasagne is one of my favorite meals, could you portion and freeze the leftovers?

ParanoidGynodroid · 28/09/2016 14:17

Sorry, not sure how Dave made a guest appearance there.

LouisvilleLlama · 28/09/2016 14:17

Might just be me, but the mince seems majorly out of proportion to say the cheese and sheets and other ingredients etc

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 28/09/2016 14:18

I'm commenting simply in the hope it will qualify me for a portion of lasagne.

DP & DS like lasagne too, but DP is at work and DS is at school so can't comment for themselves.

Please accept this as an application a comment for three portions.

Thank you.

OneManBucket · 28/09/2016 14:19

I'm queen of massive lasagnes but that's way too much cheese and sheets! And If they're expecting a Desperate Dan sized lasagne they'd need a lot more meat to compensate the cheese and pasta...sure it's not a typo and should be 7500g of meat?

Famalam13 · 28/09/2016 14:20

Do I want to know what that means Amalfi? Grin

That hadn't occurred to me CatNip! Perhaps we are being used to provide their meals for the rest of the year.

OP posts:
maybethedayafter · 28/09/2016 14:21

That is a ridiculous amount - especially the lasagne sheets, unless they buy boxes that have 2 sheets in each. But the fact they're making two trays leads me to think that maybe they're offering to make extra to put one away in the freezer. Or perhaps they are wanting to make one with meat and one vegetarian, hence the relatively small amount of mince in relation to the rest of the ingredients. You could maybe buy quorn mince instead and then you could eat it? I don't think they are really considering who they're cooking for though.

Hellochicken · 28/09/2016 14:21

YANBU about the amount of food and the lack of consideration of what you can eat . . . in your own home.

I would say can you use quorn mince for the whole thing (if DH on SW) and that you just want to check the quantities of ingredients as your over/freezer doesnt have that much capacity/ had hoped to eat other food before 2017

QuimReaper · 28/09/2016 14:22

I'm with KitKat!

We had a really good friend to stay a while ago. He used to live with DH and was "head chef" (DH is a useless cook but seems very talented at attracting people who want to feed him!) and kept barging into the kitchen and insisting on making food for us. I know it was coming from a good place and he just wanted us to relax so he could spoil us, but it just pissed me off Blush
