WIBU? How do you manage shopping with a buggy?

Most days I pop in a local small supermarket to buy a few items such as milk/ bread/ fruit (big family!). I normally have a buggy with me, either single and holding a toddler's hand or a double buggy. With a few items I often pop them on the hood before paying, with a larger amount I tend to hook a bag for life with a handle over each buggy handle so it's open and pop stuff in there. You could see in it easily. At the till I take the bag off and empty it on the conveyor then refill it after, leaving the bag on the belt. The buggy otherwise is very clear of stuff, no footmuffs, extra bags etc. They have wire baskets and even on a lighter shop with the single I can't control the buggy in the aisles whilst holding one in my hand. The trollies don't have seats either.

Today a member of staff loudly confronted me in front of other shoppers saying 'you can't do that' and 'they'll be watching you on the videos'. I was confused at first and queried doing what, until he pointed at the bag. I'd nearly finished the shop and didn't have hands for the apples/ courgettes/ milk/ bread/ pasta I'd got nor if I got a basket did I have hands free to transport it to the till so I ended up emptying the bag there and then as I couldn't see another way to stop him repeating I couldn't use a bag. I normally do it at least 3 times a week.

I went to the Tesco Metro 4 doors up and asked the guard if it was allowed in there, I got a shrug and a 'whatcha on about' look.

Obviously the solution is to shop elsewhere, but do others do this? WIBU to do so? If so how do those with buggies manage? I used to balance a basket on the hood until it bent.

Also if it is wrong, wouldn't you just bring the customer a basket with a smile and ask them to use it rather than confront? I doubt I fitted any shoplifting profile. The bag was open and visible and I wasn't acting shifty or handling things of value.....

What a jobsworth.
I usually put the handles of the basket over the handles on my buggy (Zia) but not easy if buying heavy items! My sons 3.5 now though so only really take buggy if we're going shopping for a good few hours. How about if you take the double buggy and put the basket in the seat then put lo back in the buggy for the way home? Annoying and more hassle but less embarrassing? X

Use a sling?

Use a light weight umbrella buggy with two handles, then you can pop a basket over them to hold your shopping as you go round

squizita · 26/09/2016 20:11

life you can only use a trolley if you have somewhere to put your buggy.

And you can only use a sling if you can also carry a full shop (with a baby and ruined core I once ended up floundering on the floor having dripped my shopping, tried to retrieve it without dropping dd and my legs gave way. Took fucking ages for anyone to offer help).

I bought buggy cariba clips and clip a basket to the push chair. Only works with a buggy with a bar handle though.
And use a rucksack when I use a sling. Plus now have a core of steel naturally hahahaha .

The floor incident really put me off alpha mn advice for a long time. I'd followed their advice unlike those silly silly ignorant net mums types with their impractical buggies.
Nope. No no no no no.
For a good few women sling + shopping is NOT a good idea for a good long while after birth, even if they use them for getting around.

oldlaundbooth · 26/09/2016 20:41

I do exactly as you do OP. Stuff on top of buggy.

I'd have given the staff member a bollocking and told them that I'm in there daily and do they really want to lose my business?

Speak to the manager.

Staff need to have more discretion and understanding of people with kids!

OhTheRoses · 26/09/2016 20:48

I used to put it in the net holder thingy under the buggy. I got the stare once, and then the security guard follows me and asked to see the receipt and check the bag. I went to cs, asked them for scissors and cut up the nectar card. Got a call later that afternoon and then a gift card for £25. Sent it back and shopped at Tesco's for five years!

I used to out groceries on the hood and sometimes would push the buggy with one hand and keep a basket over the other arm.

Logistically I guess that doesn't work so well with a double buggy... Online shopping maybe!?

MistressPage · 26/09/2016 21:36

Until my little'un was big enough to go in a trolley seat I used to just push my pram around loading shopping into the basket underneath. Have done it frequently in Sainsburys, Asda, Waitrose and Morrisons and never been challenged. That bloke was just being an over zealous nob. You carry on OP, it's impossible to push a buggy with one hand.

DaveGrohlsMrs · 27/09/2016 19:46

I have gone beyond that point with my daughter as she sits on trolley seat or sits in the trolley and helps me put stuff in but at the moment I'm 7 months pregnant with bad SPD and am on crutches so last time I was in the supermarket alone I had my bag for life over my shoulder and put stuff into it which I then emptied at the check out. I commented to the cashier that I had been worried that people would think I was shoplifting doing it that way and she said that loads of people did that, and not to worry. I was really paranoid about it though all the way round.

mum2Bomg · 27/09/2016 20:00

Placemarking as I don't know how people do this!

Summerholsdoingmyheadin · 28/09/2016 07:19

I paid more attention to what I was doing yesterday when I went to the shops and realised that I hook the basket over my arm and push the pram with both hands. It's actually quite easy to do.

DeadGood · 02/10/2016 13:31

YA so NBU OP! Hope you complained about this guy - what a noob! Loads of people use bags!

Also not getting the "just wear the basket in the crook of your arm, OP, it's not hard" comments. Maybe the hair shirt stops the metal handles digging into their skin?

icanteven · 02/10/2016 14:08

The security man was rude.

But seriously, this is why we have Ocado. Shopping with children is a pain in the arse, and completely unnecessary. Why do that to yourself?

IamSwitzerland · 02/10/2016 14:31

I use bags on handle clips and underneath the buggy, never had an issue, security jobsworth sounds like a chump - ask him to fetch a basket and follow round carrying your groceries if he is that bothered!

Apart from anything else filling the buggy lets me know when I can't carry any more so never end up with too much to carry home.

The only exception ever was an emergency christmas eve tesco run - my online order failed (my mistake) and I arrived at the store with a huge list and went straight to the customer service desk to beg for help - a member of staff grabbed a trolley and helped me get the lot supermarket sweep style including packing at checkout and into my car - bloody brilliant (I had to hug her for saving the day)!

NotCitrus · 02/10/2016 14:49

I just put a basket over the buggy handle and heavy stuff under the buggy. Even with a side by side double which was a git to push one-handed and needed the odd bit of gut-barging to steer it. Security sometimes stared at the checkout but who cares?
