WIBU? How do you manage shopping with a buggy?

Most days I pop in a local small supermarket to buy a few items such as milk/ bread/ fruit (big family!). I normally have a buggy with me, either single and holding a toddler's hand or a double buggy. With a few items I often pop them on the hood before paying, with a larger amount I tend to hook a bag for life with a handle over each buggy handle so it's open and pop stuff in there. You could see in it easily. At the till I take the bag off and empty it on the conveyor then refill it after, leaving the bag on the belt. The buggy otherwise is very clear of stuff, no footmuffs, extra bags etc. They have wire baskets and even on a lighter shop with the single I can't control the buggy in the aisles whilst holding one in my hand. The trollies don't have seats either.

Today a member of staff loudly confronted me in front of other shoppers saying 'you can't do that' and 'they'll be watching you on the videos'. I was confused at first and queried doing what, until he pointed at the bag. I'd nearly finished the shop and didn't have hands for the apples/ courgettes/ milk/ bread/ pasta I'd got nor if I got a basket did I have hands free to transport it to the till so I ended up emptying the bag there and then as I couldn't see another way to stop him repeating I couldn't use a bag. I normally do it at least 3 times a week.

I went to the Tesco Metro 4 doors up and asked the guard if it was allowed in there, I got a shrug and a 'whatcha on about' look.

Obviously the solution is to shop elsewhere, but do others do this? WIBU to do so? If so how do those with buggies manage? I used to balance a basket on the hood until it bent.

Also if it is wrong, wouldn't you just bring the customer a basket with a smile and ask them to use it rather than confront? I doubt I fitted any shoplifting profile. The bag was open and visible and I wasn't acting shifty or handling things of value.....

I would go back and lodge a complaint. Sounds like a bloody jobsworth who is hellbent on cracking down on all those mums shoplifting with bags for life.

I used to shove everything in a basket on top of DD1's pram but if I ran out of space I'd put it underneath the pram. The staff in that shop were so lovely they quite often sent someone to walk down the street with me to carry my bags home. Really lovely shop.

hazelnutlatte · 25/09/2016 21:41

I always go to tesco and do scan as you shop, then I can stuff everything under the buggy after scanning it. I get a bit confused now if I go to another supermarket and there are no scanner things!

yeOldeTrout · 25/09/2016 21:46

I had a tandem style double buggy (long wheel base). So one hand on D-buggy & one hand on a shopping trolley (towing rather than pushing it) or carrying a wire basket. Sometimes I had to let go trolley/put own basket to steer the buggy somewhere.

I know that horrible "I've been yelled at by a jobsworth" feeling. Shudder.

Speak to the manager and get 'permission' - I don't think it is a problem
I've done it without a buggy. Just not thinking as I was carrying my bags for life and started filling it instead of getting a basket. At the till I apologised and they said don't worry lots of people do that all the time...
Shoplifters do use buggies to steal things ...but that doesn't mean everyone with a buggy is a thief...and you were being so open - hardly the way anyone but the most hardened shoplifter would operate. Guess they are new at their job...
(Actually I saw something really Hmm in a big Tescos the other day - about 4 women (family group) with one buggy set the alarm off leaving, security guard came over and one of them said it will be the buggy it has been doing that in the shopping centre too...do you want to search it? and the guard waved them through. A couple of them smirked at each other when they got outside - more of less high fiving each other ... I think they were using the buggy as a decoy or something...suspect one of the others was carrying nicked stuff.)

TerriB84 · 25/09/2016 21:56

I do this all the time and I don't even have a buggy to push. I just carry my bag for life and use it in place of a basket. They were being utterly ridiculous.

n0ne · 25/09/2016 21:59

I can wedge a basket between the handle and hood of our buggy so shopping goes in there. But if I take the pushchair I just hang the basket on my arm or use one of the draggy ones with wheels.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 25/09/2016 22:00

Agree with PPs you're not doing anything wrong. I've used a buggy board to put the basket on if you have one - I would go out and buy one special though!

Shop online, I've never looked back

I use a shop which has the baskets on wheels you pull along which I can manage with the buggy. Trolley is awkward and basket heavy and awkward. I am flummoxed when I go somewhere without that type of basket though. I think you were being perfectly reasonable and security guard has probably not attempted shopping with pram himself sohasn't thought it through.

chocdonutyy · 25/09/2016 22:07

Use a trolley, fold the buggy and pop it in the end or hang off the handle, baby goes in the seat and jobs done , just don't buy so much that it won't fit in the buggy after you've paid!

CircleofWillis · 25/09/2016 22:20

I doubt I fitted any shoplifting profile

Being non-white I must fit a "shoplifting profile" as I am regularly followed around shops and have become desensitised to being suspected. I often do just as you did and put my shopping in an open bag or on the pram hood but have yet to be openly challenged. However I often find myself playing "aisle dodgems" with members of staff who spend most of my shopping time watching me closely while those individuals who do not fit their shoplifting profile are being ignored and slowly emptying their shelves. While annoyed for you it is also slightly reassuring that some security staff have an open mind and do not just judge on appearance. i.e. they treat everyone in the same shoddy manner.

DorothyHarris · 25/09/2016 22:24

I have DTS and a 2yr old. I usually put the supermarket basket under the pram if I've got the toddler with me if not just hang the basket from my arm to push the double pram...sorry OP really not that difficult.

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 25/09/2016 22:25

I mostly shop online but still go into the local supermarket for a few bits through the week and usually end up buying more than I planned.

I have a big tandem double buggy (double Uppababy). I can't steer it one handed. It's impossible to hang a basket from the handles as DC's legs would be in the way. If my eldest is in the right mood they walk and stuff goes in the second seat. If not, stuff goes underneath. No one bats an eyelid. The security guard is too busy checking out the ladies to mind GrinShock

Enidblyton1 · 25/09/2016 22:27

I do this all the time and have never been questioned. Now I always carry a bag for life, it makes sense to put the shopping in there rather than bother with a basket, even when I don't have the kids with me!
I would just ignore the security man and continue as normal. You're not doing anything wrong!

Do you have any other large supermarket options other than Budgens? My town doesn't and its v depressing - Budgens is either cheap and nasty food or the decent stuff is more expensive than Waitrose Shock

Joinourclub · 25/09/2016 22:29

I shop in the coop, they have plastic baskets with one handle and they are sort of kidney shaped to fit into your hip, and are just the right size and shape to hook the handle over my buggy handle. The wire ones at mortisons are more of a pain,so I don't go there.

newmumwithquestions · 26/09/2016 07:26

newmum, sorry I cannot believe that you can one handed push a double buggy round narrow aisles. You'd go in circles and crash into things. Try it.

I do, all the time! Seriously I don't find it that much harder to manoeuvre than my single one. Maybe it depends on the type of buggy (mines one where one goes above and in front rather than side by side).

PrincessHairyMclary · 26/09/2016 07:27

You wouldn't even get a double buggy round my local One Stop they'd have to be left next to the door/till and you'd have to run round quickly.

londonrach · 26/09/2016 07:29

One of the staff pushes the pram whilst i shop!

Summerholsdoingmyheadin · 26/09/2016 07:42

I only have a single pushchair but I push it with one hand and carry the basket with the other hand. My pushchair is very easy to steer. We did buy a cheap pushchair to take on holiday and it was so awkward and difficult to steer I threw it away when we got home.

29redshoes · 26/09/2016 07:45

I used to work in a supermarket and remember being told that it is not a problem for customers to use their own bags to carry their groceries while going round the shop.

Looking back it was quite an odd thing for them to make a thing out of so I wonder if one of my colleagues had had a jobsworth moment like your security guard.

Anyway, I'd just do the same thing again and if he gets shirty ask to speak to the manager.

some buggies steer well, some don't. used to put it in the base of the buggy... push buggy to til. disappear from view of check out staff as I retrieved items from the base. anyuthing light that was put on the top was put on the open hood so I could see it.

push buggy through check out, disappear from view again as repacked the buggy.

puguin86 · 26/09/2016 08:15

Complain! I have twins and of course a double buggy. I get this a lot. Last time I was shopping aldi I was followed round. I was told it looked like I was stealing by putting food in the buggy basket. I asked for a double trolley.... Nope don't do them .... Then asked him to walk behind me and carry the shopping.... Nope wouldn't do that either. Asked exactly what I should do ... Blank face and then he walked off ....
