Supermarket trollies... AIBU

LK2boyzma · 24/09/2016 14:31

I think that parents/ adults should not be allowed to put older children inside supermarket trollies for health and safety reasons. I am a bit OCD and this totally winds me up. These little shoes go into toilets, step on all sorts including spit whilst walking out and about then they come to the supermarkets and get to stand in the trolley with the same shoes on! 😳
AIBU to think this should be a no no!

A BIT OCD is VERY offensive. Unless you have an official diagnosis. 🙄

Although I agree with the replies so far, I do think some of these are kind of funny. They're kept outside so foxes piss on them and drunk clubbers puke on them?? Really?? Grin I'm sure both of those things COULD happen, but at the same time, neither of them sound like particularly common occurrences!!

While it's dangerous (trolleys can tip really easily) the hygiene aspect really doesn't bother me. Trolleys are filthy anyway - if they're outside, they're covered in rain, bird crap and rat piss at a minimum. Add into that adults not washing their hands, food being stored in vans, dragged into warehouses and stored in pretty grubby fridges/freezers, I think dirty shoes are the least of your worries!

Well the trollies have been outside, rained on, etc, so it's probably no worse...isn't almost all food packaged anyway?

I agree with you OP.
The trollers may be dirty but no need to make them worse!

OP Here's an idea: take boxes (can be plastic or old cardboard ones), or bags for life, or trolley bags like these: www.lakeland.co.uk/24862/4-Reusable-Supermarket-Shopping-Trolley-Bags---Deep

That way, nothing touches the trolley, and as an added bonus, you don't have to spend money/hurt the environment by using plastic carrier bags each week

While the fox piss/puke might be an exaggeration, how clean do you think supermarket carparks are? Birds and wildlife aren't that particular about where they go to the toilet, and the trolleys aren't cleaned regularly at all.

I would much rather small children were safe in a trolley than potentially unsafe outside of it. May I suggest scan as you go shopping so you can place your items straight into a bag and then straight into your car.

Surely if Trollies permanently live outside when not in use its safe to assume anything could happen to them... Wether that be fox piss or otherwise. Also, people rescue them from rivers or dumping sites.

It's not making them worse, it's just more of the same dirt. The dirt is already on them.

The supermarkets never seem to say anything to parents who do this and I suppose if it was a majorly against health and safety they would do, as long as the child isn't standing up I don't see the problem.. and as for the kids shoes walk in spit and around toilets I'm not sure if you know this but trolleys aren't exactly sterile to start off with.. Hmm
I can't understand how this can annoy you and your "OCD" you push a trolley around? Think about it, them amount of people's hands that have pushed that same trolley, they might not of washed their hands after being to the toilet. But your still gonna push it and then touch the food that's nearly always in packaging Hmm YADBU.

I shop online but in a desperate moment I might brave the supermarket. In which case my twin 18mo sit in the front bit of the trolley and my 3yo sits in the big bit. If the child is sitting I really don't see how the trolley would tip. I've never seen a trolley randomly tip over tbh. Trolleys are minging as are the crates they home deliver in run a babywipe over one and you'll see.

I don't put mine in because I don't think he would behave sensibly and would throw all the food out. I would if I could because he is too big to fit in the seat but can't walk around the supermarket. We are reliant on the sn trollies which are not always available.

Whoever knew shopping was such a dangerous activity, potential head injuries, germs from shit, puke and fox piss in the trolly. I shop at least twice a week and am not quite sure how i have managed to survive it all. Yabu btw.

Right, that's why I said I agree with the sentiment, it's just that some of these specificities are pretty hilarious.

They're kept outside! Must be covered in fox piss! Grin

Supermarket staff DO tell people not to let their children stand in trolleys...and get a load of verbal back.

They can easily tip. DH works for Tesco and has seen it happen several times. They are told they should tell people not to let their children do this.

Seeing children in trolleys in a pet hate of mine. Saw a child try to climb out of one recently, and nearly tip it over.

You can't avoid germs. They are everywhere, including in and on supermarket trollies. They are also in your car boot, where you presumably put the shopping to get it home.

You could spend hours disinfecting the lot before use or you could just accept that there is a reason why we have a magic weapon in our armoury called an immune system. It is there to enable us to survive such unimaginable horrors as supermarket trollies, amongst other things.

If you saw the warehouse you wouldn't worry about the trolley. They are open at the gates and there are all sorts of wildlife in there, particularly rats.

It is unsafe as I recently saw a small toddler take a tumble from the trolley, luckily he seemed bit to be badly injured.

Topseyt · 24/09/2016 16:07

By the way, I never did put my DDs in the trolley basket. Too much danger of it tipping. They only went in the seat.

Once they outgrew that I either had them on the reins or if DH was at home I left them with him.

This makes me think of the awful Liz Jones of the Mail on Sunday who wipes all of the stuff she buys with dettol wipes before she puts it in her fridge

I saw something on telly recently that did a test on trolly handles. The horrible things that were on there! Seriously nasty germs. IIRC equally dirty are the handles of petrol pumps and the buttons on ATM machines and card readers.

I think of this sometimes when i'm using the above and wince a bit ...

Report
bloomburger · 24/09/2016 16:20

They tested some supermarket trolley handles on a TV show once and they had faeces and all sorts on them.

Asda was the most disgusting and Waitrose the least Shock

If your not Dettol wiping your trolley handle before pushing it every item you put in it has shit on it so a few germs from Children's shoes really isn't going to make a whole lot of difference.
