...to expect people to use their indicators?

Why oh why oh why oh why do people not bother to indicate any more?

It drives me absolutely stark raving bonkers when I am driving and the person in front stops unexpectedly and then indicates. Do they not remember "mirror signal manoeuvre"?

Or at roundabouts. Am I supposed to guess which exit they are taking? I spend all my time saying "oh you're going that way are you?"

Or on dual carriageways. I want to overtake, I check behind me, indicate and then pull out. At exactly the same time as the car behind me who isn't indicating decides to pull out...

I haven't been involved in an accident yet, but the way I see people driving, I don't think it will be long...

I'm not perfect, I know that, but I do use my indicators in the correct manner.

I think people should be retested every 5-10 years to ensure they HAVE A BLOODY CLUE. And bear in mind I took 5 tests before I passed on my 6th attempt, failed every time because of nerves, so really would not relish taking another one. But I would do it, for the sake of road safety...

rant over!

Actually, I think it's only an offence to reverse on to a main road, but I'm not sure what the definition of main road is here.
My DB who is all types of car & driving expert is always telling me I should reverse onto my drive & drive out & he can do it with a quick flick of the wheel, but I always have to go over the other side of the road , so I don't do it very often - but we are on a very quiet cul de sac.

I do reverse into parking spaces though, as it is much safer. My pet hate is people with 4x4s or people carriers who don't reverse in - the upright back completely blocks the view for anyone coming out of a space beside them - if they went in backwards, at least you'd have a chance to see over their bonnet!
I was once hit in Tesco's by someone reversing out from between two 4x4xs , so I feel strongly....

McDreamy..that edging forward stuff.
Yes!! I want to scream 'Just feckin' wait your turn!' at them. Do the ones behind peep too,the second the lights turn green? Dh and i reckon they have to do this as the person at the front of the queue has edged so far forward,he can no longer see the lights, thus has to be alerted.
And yet....terrible road manners, lovely warm charming people whereas we Brits have great road manners yet aren't very hospitable at all.

Sue,have heard that traffic in Nigeria is hellish.Mind you,my parents are in Saudi which I think is even worse than Turkey!

Glad to see the debate still raging!

On the reverse into drive thing, I live on a very busy main road. If I reversed into my drive it would cause all sorts of chaos - I would not be given the room behind me that I would need (even though I would of course be indicating and have my reverse lights on). So I have to drive in forwards and reverse out. I would prefer it the other way, but really have no other choice...the reverse out is made slightly easier by the fact that we are at traffic lights, so can always wait until they are red and move out then.

I do sometimes think I should practice reversing into the drive late at night / v early morning, so I can perfect it without an audience!

Oh yes as soon as the lights turn green if your not moving they are peeping you Laughed this morning and thought of you all as I was driving through Limmassol, the guy in front of me just ignored 3 red lights in a row and then came to a roundabout where I caught him up - so he'd gained nothing for his dangerous driving - AND he was sat there chatting on his mobile phone!!!!

emsiewill · 05/02/2007 11:02

Oh, and (yes I am still ranting on) why do people think it's OK to use the pavement outside my house to park on? As mentioned before, it is a very busy (A) road, with shops on the other side of the road, so the people who are just "nipping to Spar" park completely on the pavement while they do it.

I have no issue with people stopping briefly to drop non-able bodied people off (eg at the dentist next door but one), but sometimes they park there for 1/2 hour or more. My neighbours are bad at this - they park there early evening until they are all home and then arrange the cars in the driveway, including the one that has been on the pavement for hours.

We live on a main road and buses stop accross our drive whilst people get on and off. They have even been known to stay there for five hours if they have broken down.....

And, as a pedestrian, I hate drivers who stop over pelican crossings so you have to walk round them.

tirnanog · 05/02/2007 11:11

Is there much road rage in Limmasol?

McDreamy · 05/02/2007 11:15

Pelican crossing? The Cyps look at you as if you are mad when you try and use one of those. Yes they are a very aggressive nation when it comes to driving. You don't see many Cyp women driving it is prediminately men and so when they see a blonde Brit woman driving I think that adds to their rage. I have to be so careful - they don't give way to be, they don't indicate, they will just change lanes when they want without indicating and don't get me started on the parking - you have seen nothing like it, it's so dangerous. I swear the government would make a fortune if they introduced parking fines!!!!

tirnanog · 05/02/2007 11:19

Maybe they are not like us then, that is quite shocking and stressful,as well as dangerous.

McDreamy · 05/02/2007 11:20

It is stressful driving in the city centres I avoid it when I can!

tirnanog · 05/02/2007 11:25

Where we live which is quite rural the driving is erratic but friendly with lots of waving [even if you don't know the other driver] and certainly isn't aggressive.

yellowrose · 05/02/2007 11:29

no, it's not unreasonable (although i admit to being quite anal when it comes to other people's driving skills !!) sometimes it's just bloody dangerous !

martellandginger · 25/10/2017 22:19

I have a lovely friend who i followed home from an event one day. She indicated one time only!! It did make me lose a bit of respect for her as she had 2 under 5 in the car.

This thread is 10 years old. Confused

starzig · 25/10/2017 22:31

It's the ones that don't think they have to cause they are in a left turn only lane. A pedestrian doesn't necessarily know that if they don't drive and may walk out not expecting the car to turn.

starzig · 25/10/2017 22:33

Also hate people still indicating right as they come off the roundabout leaving me next entrance up looking like an idiot and hesitator (if they are unable to see that they were indicating to come round)
