To ask you to help me recall a memory

Hi all! Posting here for traffic. Sorry my username isn't a bit more scintillating.
I'm from the States, but back in 2004 my parents and I spent some time in and around London. We stayed at the most lovely bed and breakfast, and I would dearly love to find it online and show pictures to my DH, but neither of my parents seem to be able to remember so much as the name of the area we were in. I was only about ten years old, but I have some of the happiest memories of that trip.

Here is what I do remember! It was a very large, very old house. At least it seemed very old to me as a child, though I do seem to remember hearing the owner talk about its history. I remember being very impressed by its size and grandeur! It was owned by a woman. I believe she had a husband and children as well but I never saw them. Her elderly mother lived there also. It seemed like it was quite a long drive from where we got off the ferry after crossing the Channel. It wasn't terribly far from London, but far enough that we only stayed there a few nights to recover from jet lag before proceeding to a hotel from which we went back and forth to London. I think it was probably quite a standard village; I remember stone houses, horseback riders, children in school uniforms, etc all of which were of course quite novel to me!

I realize this is barely any information whatsoever, it certainly hasn't been enough for me to turn anything up via Google. Even though it's a long shot I am so hoping it rings a bell for someone! We had disposable cameras along but only a few blurry pictures were taken, though I can see it all clearly in my mind, and I'd love to revisit those memories with a bit more information.

Could it be Sandwich? (My old) School there has tartan kilts; and it has cobbled streets and lovely old buildings etc. Also lots of outlying villages and fits in with travel from Kent ports to London!

Re my earlier suggestion of Mayfield in East Sussex, here's a B&B in Mayfield www.brockham-house.co.uk/. I suppose it might pass for grey on a drab December day!

To be fair though holly distance for big country folk is a whole different ball game. 5-6 hours drive is considered a day-trip here in Brazil.

Some images of Mayfield www.mayfieldfiveashes.org.uk/Village/v_gallery.html

Sorry - I've got the bit between my teeth now! And speaking of bit between the teeth, Mayfield School has an equestrian centre www.mayfieldgirls.org/Mayfield-Equestrian-. Although horse riders in a rural village/town is quite a common sight anyway.

I wouldnt call Mayfield very grey though, with the timber beamed houses

Can't help as I'm up north, but I think it would help to confirm with OP

what is cobbled
street/path
a B&B/Holiday Inn
skirts - what is tartan
village/town
the village/town had a fish and chip shop

So, the OP flew from Chicago to Amsterdam, drove to Nice (to visit family), then drove to northern France to get the ferry. Ferries only do direct routes from France to UK (?) so we need to know all the ports which are so far from London the OP would need to stop off overnight before travelling on to London, passing the White Cliffs of Dover. Or am I as confused as the OP?

I wasn't suggesting that Mayfield itself is 'grey', Noah. It's just that the OP described the B&B as being grey.

Report
NoahVale · 17/09/2016 10:39

I think the op had an overwhelming feeling of grey

I think the op had an overwhelming feeling of grey

To be fair in December in England most people get an overwhelming feeling of grey Grin

I was just about to say that too, Caipora Grin

After all, the OP was quite young, exhausted by all the travelling and if it was murky December weather when they were there, I guess she would have felt 'an overwhelming feeling of grey'!

Kath the white cliffs were most likely seen on the ferry coming in to Dover. Assuming it was Dover, but it is the most likely contender. Were the actual roads 'cobbled' or just the pavement/ sidewalk?

That's true.
I'm in Ireland (urban) and consider Dublin to Kerry a long drive.

I was going to suggest Rochester - the main route from Dover to London is M2 or M20, usually the M2. This brushes very close to Rochester and the Medway Towns.

Is the place you are trying to find a Holiday Inn, or the original place mentioned in the OP. If you went in on the subway/underground then you would be in South London not Kent. Look at the stations on the 2004 underground map and see if any ring a bell...

I went to Rye many years ago as adult. From memory, I would be unsure if it was town or village, so a 10 year old on a brief visit couldn't be sure. Love the idea of steph and Dom though.

Yes London via Amsterdam and Nice sounds bizarre unless they spent some time in Amsterdam.

Until there's a bit more clarification I think we're all just taking wild guesses really.

My wild guess starts with Faversham
www.faversham.org/history/buildings.aspx

It would fit with your Dad's interest in buildings and history and while it wouldn't be most people's choice of destination between Dover and London, if you did come in to Dover, your parents' ideas do seem random.

Also, did they hire a car in Nice and then drive it onto the ferry and then around the UK?

I don't get how a 5 hour drive can be considered a day trip. Yes the country is big but there are still only 24 hours in a day.

My son's gone to a "local" schools football tournament today. They left at 5am to arrive about 9.30am. They'll leave at 3pm and be home at 8pm. Day trip Grin

You can't have done Amsterdam to Nice for a day trip and then Nice to Calais crossing the next day. It's about 13 hours drive from Amsterdam to Nice and then would be about 11 hours to Calais from Nice. Look at a map!

Which is also at odds with the idea of having to break the journey between dover and London which really into far at all
