To wonder what is so bad about being a 'lefty'?

I see it all the time during political discussions on social media. That if you hold certain views you are branded a 'lefty' or 'loony left' like its some sort of insult. I've noticed that it tends to be a stock response by some people when they can't think of something more intelligent to say.

Aibu to wonder what is so 'loony' about holding left wing views, and that actually the world would be a better place if people were more tolerant?

mini contradiction and finger pointing isn't persuasive.

Why would i accept your word against my own experience?

Uricon · 16/09/2016 22:38

chikara

I don't think 'caring for and enabling' is the same as 'looking after'. There will always be a need for 'looking after' (and that could come to any of us, at any time, for the short or longer term, the thigns that could make any of us vulnerable) but more often it is about equality of oppotunity.

At the risk of quoting Marx- "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs"

What Government and coalition policies do you think have helped women in this country?

Uricon · 16/09/2016 22:39

*thigns is a nice word, but 'things', of course.

imwithspud · 16/09/2016 22:39

A lot of lefties are hypocrites. That's it really.

Except that's not it really is it? I could say a lot of righties are racist bigoted Britain First followers. Doesn't make it true though does it?

It's a lazy argument.

I am going to give up and go away as don't know any real left wing or any real right wing people that are anything like the stereotypes on here.

And we are getting nowhere except - "The Left are hypocrites" and "The right don't care about anyone except themselves"

Ego147 · 16/09/2016 22:41

Aspiration to want what others take for granted

Do you think Government policies at the moment allow aspiration?

Affordable housing - to rent or to buy?
Good and outstanding local schools?
A viable job market?
Secure economy?

NNChangeAgain · 16/09/2016 22:41

"Do you want the right wing to just "go away"? Because I get the feeling that some people on the left wing not only want a left wing government actually don't want there to be opposition.

Don't be silly.

Well, what I can I conclude when you say this:
We don't need more women like Theresa May and various other career politicians who don't give a shit about the lives of ordinary women because they have fuck all in common with any of them.

What would you like the "opposition" to look like if women who choose politics as a career are unacceptable to you ?

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 16/09/2016 22:44

No Ego

But aspiration for the working class would also be quashed by Labour if they were to get in under this leadership which they absolutely won't

But aspiration for the working class would also be quashed by Labour if they were to get in under this leadership which they absolutely won't

What policies would you like to see to help aspiration?

sandyholme · 16/09/2016 22:48

The brass tacks is all the likes of Corbyn ,Abbot , Mcdonnell would be able to do to save the working class is to give them an extra £30 a week !

However, when every business person has left the country and inflation has gone up to 30% . The day that every Union rep start competing with each other 'Who can get the best pay deal' 75% INCOME TAX, 100% INHERITANCE TAX .

and the 'POOR' WORSE off but hey INEQUALITY WILL disappear because everyone will be SKINT!

Chikara · 16/09/2016 22:50

Uricon - I agree with you - completely. I used "look after" in its widest sense, ( responsible for, give a chance to ..) - but I agree it doesn't mean enable really.

And the Marx quote is one I try to live by. And it is good to discuss this. I was just getting annoyed by the insistence on a Left/Right divide.

I am very left on some things and very right on others.

ItsJustNotRight · 16/09/2016 22:51

Enthusiasm what on earth do you mean? I don't nderstand. Pleas explain.

Ego147 · 16/09/2016 22:52

I am very left on some things and very right on others

I'm sure there must be a party for you. Somewhere in the middle.

ghostyslovesheep · 16/09/2016 22:54

but our economy is now worse! 6 years old right wing policy hasn't made things better!

why assume every 'business person' is anti left, anti tax and anti equality - my ex is a small business owner - a very rich one - who believes he should pay tax to help society and doesn't begrudge it at all - and he's in the highest tax bracket

ItsJustNotRight · 16/09/2016 22:55

Duke of Westiminster left £8 billion in trust fund, no inheritance tax payable. Who needs £8 billion? Inheritance tax payable (I think) on £600K as standard. What's fair?

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 16/09/2016 22:55

Real economic plans to create investment and create jobs

Less concerning themselves with renationalising the rail network (that will cost billions) and renationalising other privatised companies, it's done now and more can be done to help create fairer prices by working with these companies and investors rather than fighting against them

Capping rents

Working with what this country has and making it better not some ideal that you want the country to be and that includes doing more than increasing tax

Chikara · 16/09/2016 22:58

I'm sure there must be a party for you. Somewhere in the middle - Ha - Ego - Grin The middle are the worst of the lot!!

emilywemily · 16/09/2016 23:00

Yes YABU this thread is obviously going to get nasty

ghostyslovesheep · 16/09/2016 23:01

yes - I think a big difference is in approach

Right wing views often help people top down' so 'trickle down theory' and the idea that the rich will automatically help the poor

Left is more 'bottom up' and as you rise you hold out a hand to help others

that is one difference I see a lot

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 16/09/2016 23:02

Aspiration for the working class was something very much New Labour recognised and worked with its was also something Thatcher recognised hence the selling off council property

It's not how Corbyn wants to do things. It's all very well wanting a fairer society but some people want value social mobility and those on the far left of the party it's a dirty expression

ghostyslovesheep · 16/09/2016 23:02

Yes YABU this thread is obviously going to get nasty

yet in 3.5 hours since the OP it hasn't - at all Hmm

Ego147 · 16/09/2016 23:03

ghosty

A rising tide, ladders being pulled up. Lots of potential metaphors there.

I don't think the rising tide has helped people.

ghostyslovesheep · 16/09/2016 23:06

well it wont if those rising don't help those floating

I think if you give back, if you remember your roots, if you try and improve things for everyone you are doing something right

imwithspud · 16/09/2016 23:11

Yes YABU this thread is obviously going to get nasty

Seems to be going well so far but feel free to add fuel to the fire with comments like thisHmm
