Have just read expensive items worth every penny thread & interested to see what others have regretted buying. I'll start off with steam mops, I've had 3 all useless & binned. Garden strimmers again I've had 3 makes and none of them any good. The last was a Gtech which promised so much including free blades for life. Hidden in the small print was the £2.99 delivery cost per packet of 20. By the 2nd use I had used 10 blades as the kept splitting. It was returned for a refund.

Dyson vacuums. Absolute crap. The "animal" one cost a bloody fortune and we gave it away when a cheap supermarket one cleaned the animal hair so much better the carpet was shades different.

Hotlingbling · 13/09/2016 18:14

You guys should sell them I have seen a few items on this list that I would use. Put them on eBay and post the link here.

My dad had a fondue set about 10 years ago, we had a week of various fondue meals (fish is delicious but slow!) it's never been mentioned since.

He also had a bread maker and used it for about a month.

God knows what else he has that I don't hear about!

I have an iron and ironing board that gets used about twice a year (I only iron if I absolutely definitely cannot possibly get away with no ironing... Usually linen trousers). But it's one of those mini ironing boards from Ikea and I discovered it's great for crafting on!

My tent because i can borrow a better, easier and bigger one for the one week a year I actually need it

MerylPeril · 13/09/2016 18:44

Steamer - obsessed with it when we were young and had time to stand over working out how long to cook everything for.
Pasta maker - DH bought it to make pasta, forgetting he only cooks once a year! So used once
Smoothie maker - I don't really like smoothies

Love my steam mop! DH wants to get one of those portable dysons, I think it will be a waste

ItsJustNotRight · 13/09/2016 19:03

I have a cordless Dyson, it's OK but not worth the money. I got mine with Tesco vouchers when they were doing double offer & topped up with £50 cash. IMO, £50 is about all it's worth, I'm so glad I didn't spend any more on it.

A steam oven. Still has book in it Blush

Ladymayormaynot · 13/09/2016 20:19

Meryl can I ask what make your steam mop is? I had a Vax, it wouldn't even stand up. Can't remember the 2nd one & 3rd was a German make Erdher....something like that. I had high hopes of German one but no better than the other 2. StStrat recommended Bissell but that was vac as well and I don't need that. They were all wobbly, spat water, puddles, difficult to fill etc. I might give it another go if I can get a good one. I hate traditional mops.

Wash your mouth out!

Grin sorry!

Butteredparsn1ps · 13/09/2016 20:37

I actually use my bread-maker and actifry, and I loves my slow cooker. Easily pleased me.

Cold coffee machine was a complete waste of money. The coffee tastes great, but a cafetière would do the job as well. Hmm

MerylPeril · 13/09/2016 20:42

Ladymayor I also have a Vax I've never had a problem with it!

Ladymayormaynot · 13/09/2016 20:51

Meryl I'm gutted ! Looks like I'll be stuck with stinky string thing and bucket forever.

Photo printer. I was given it one Christmas just after I had upgraded the laptop with an OS too advanced for the printer. I print photobooks in any case so the thing has been gathering dust in the loft for years.

ItsJustNotRight · 13/09/2016 20:59

Any techy person know how to set up a one day kitchen swap shop online? It could be a potential earner or fund raiser for someone with the know how & it could save all this stuff from landfill.

LightDrizzle · 13/09/2016 21:05

Pasta machine, I can't bring myself to throw it out under the delusion that I will actually use it again to make delicious ravioli, it was last used to make anything about 15 years ago. I'm sure it gave the pasta a slight machine oil taint.

A running machine, it wasn't a proper electric one and it pulled on my back unlike the ones in the gym, it was over £200 and it now sits in the garage until I can be arsed to Craigslist it (all eternity).

We bought a very good and quite expensive Vango Airbeam awning for our camper van three years ago, we have used it a lot but not really as an awning, wmore like a detached tent/storeroom as we don't like to block the view from the van by attaching it as intended. I've just bought a pop-up 2 man Quechua tent that will be much quicker and easier for the odd weekend trips and I have a slightly queasy feeling that we'll end up not using the Vango any more. If that ends up case then I reall must sell it.

Sadik · 13/09/2016 21:20

YY to tent - we bought a big family tent after years of getting by with 2 little 2 person ones. Used it maybe twice, then I bought a van . . .

Its swings and roundabouts though - I bought a cheap and cheerful awning for the van 2nd hand on ebay which I've used absolutely loads

flightywoman · 13/09/2016 21:31

A coffee Aeropress. What a load of hype that shit is. You can only do one teeny tiny cup at a time, so by the time you've done a second for your companion, your own has gone cold. And it's not that great either.

Smoothie maker - I gave it away. It had a little tap which was impossible to clean.

Breadmaker - utterly pointless, it never worked properly and I don't like bread in that stupid shape and with a hole in the middle.

OTOH, I have a jug blender which is the smoothest thing ever, but the jug has cracked - because the husband dropped it on the floor [frown]. I can't get a replacement as it's about 20 years old, so am scouring ebay for a 2nd hand one.

goose1964 · 13/09/2016 21:41

Juicer, costs a fortune for fruit/veg and catch to clean.mandolin too scared to use it.sure there's loads of other stuff too. For anyone with a George Foreman who doesn't use it , it makes real!y lovely bacon.

GaryGilmoresEyes · 13/09/2016 22:05

I used my breadmaker once and gave it away.
I've been craving a soda stream for ages though.

JasperDamerel · 13/09/2016 22:22

I nearly bought a sad stream until I worked out that Aldi sparkling water was cheaper.

YelloDraw · 13/09/2016 22:35

I nearly bought a sad stream until I worked out that Aldi sparkling water was cheaper.
But you have to carry that home! Soda steam is so convenient :-)

ItsJustNotRight · 13/09/2016 22:42

Gym equipment. I had forgotten about the treadmill, rowing machine, exercise bike ... I don't even see these huge items anymore. I love my Aeropress it is the best coffee maker ever. What I love best is its so simple to use and easy to clean as well, no grouts in the sink ever.

FeelingSmurfy · 13/09/2016 23:51

All these kitchen items, send them my way Grin save me a fortune on lakeland definitely don't have an online basket full at the moment, nope not me! all the things mentioned would be used, I love a kitchen gadget!

I agree about steam mop, just too much faffing

SabineUndine · 14/09/2016 00:02

Neato robot vacuum. The gadget itself was fine. Then it developed a fault and I discovered there's no after sales support in Europe. So that's a £££ gadget sitting gathering dust.
