I'm not, am I?

If you don't know what dh/ds/dd means, browse a bit and read a bit until you do.

If you don't know how to add smileys or links, explore a bit further on the site, until you do.

If you think everyone is horrible - go back to wherever you bloody came from!

Back when it was all green fields, people used to lurk before plunging in to post on a site.

Not just MN. Most sites. It was the norm. Look at a community. See if, on balance, you like it. Get some idea of its norms. Then join in.

It's a bigger change than sometimes realised that that approach has withered. And that so many people think it's OK to join a site and immediately start criticising it.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 12/09/2016 07:01

MNHQ like the swearing.

Th site is sometimes straplined 'the one with the swearing'

There really is no point in joining a site that's sweary and proud of it if you don't want to read 'rough and illiterate' stuff

Rozdeek · 12/09/2016 07:09

I haven't seen any of these "newbies complaining" threads. Where are they???

Rozdeek · 12/09/2016 07:10

"Rough and illiterate"

Boo fucking hoo Grin

AuntieStella · 12/09/2016 07:12

This is yesterday's, Rozdeek

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2730068-To-think-some-commenters-on-the-AIBU-threads-are-just-bitchy?

They do seem to be happening at least weekly at the moment.

Boogers · 12/09/2016 07:13

There's one kicking off every so often, usually asking why people swear so much and usually met with a barrage of obscenities. Grin

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 12/09/2016 07:21

I find the threads by newbies whinging are balanced by the whinging from the more established posters.

I find them equally annoying.

Although a whinging thread about whinging has tickled me for some reason.

Sparklingbrook · 12/09/2016 07:28

I am always saying this but Hide Thread is a brilliant function. I wonder if newbies should have it pointed out as part of the signing up procedure.

MissHooliesCardigan · 12/09/2016 07:28

diggedy I disagree, I think MN is generally quite welcoming to newbies and it's too big for a 'them and us' thing. However, if you're 'new' anywhere, the onus is on you to suss out the general vibe and how things work. I started a new job in January. My expectation was that people were generally welcoming and willing to answer questions However, I had to accept that I was joining a team of people that had known each other for years, had a particular way of doing things and that there were going to be in jokes that I didn't 'get'. I would not have ingratiated myself by going on about how much nicer my old team was, how much better they did things there and to insist that they all stop making jokes that I didn't understand because it made me uncomfortable.

LyndaNotLinda · 12/09/2016 07:29

Pan - one thing that pisses me off even more than newbies complaining about swearing is men complaining about women swearing. 'Rough and illiterate' indeed.

Fuck off if you don't like it

Rozdeek · 12/09/2016 07:29

Yeah these 'MN isn't what it used to be' threads are always cropping up too

Just one of the revolving door of MN threads alongside parking, disabled bus seats, MILs, dogs etc

kungfupannda · 12/09/2016 07:31

I frequent a cafe where there's a lady who comes in regularly and spends the whole time moaning loudly about her fellow customers. I might send her to MN - she'd do a great whinge!

SlinkyVagabond · 12/09/2016 07:32

The meanies at AIBU one made me laugh. Really? At Aibu? No!
I'm an intermediate too, but I took some time to look at the rules, the abbreviations before wandering in.(and looking like a wazzock)
What does boil my piss (above the pearl clutchers)is the use of textspeak. It's not u, it's you. We aren't on Twitter, you can use as many characters as you want.

WheelofPan · 12/09/2016 07:32

Charming Linda.

ClaudiaWankleman · 12/09/2016 07:32

I've been here quite a while - it has changed. There is much more nastiness where posters jump on an OP for pages and pages and calling them worse and worse names for no other apparent reason than they see to want to be 'in the club' for scolding the OP. The number of biscuits I've seen being given out have my first ever biscuit for sounding like a first rate cunt has gone through the roof too.

It's not a newbie problem. The atmosphere has changed, probably due to a combination of factors that I can think of.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 12/09/2016 07:36

Tbh I think some of the intermediate-length-of-time here are worse than newbies. They moan when the "oldies" complain about how it was 10+ years ago, then moan when "newbies" complain about how it is now.

And then there are the ones who complain about the slightest little change like they own the site. If nothing ever changed sites would still look like the one I've found a picture of.

to be sick to the fekking back teeth of newbies complaining about Mumsnet?
Sparklingbrook · 12/09/2016 07:36

I haven't seen a 'MN isn't what it used to be' threads for a while.

Some people seem to only look at AIBU though and think that's the whole of MN.

youarenotkiddingme · 12/09/2016 07:41

Yanbu.

I came here about 8 years ago from the dark side after one of those threads where someone linked something from MN and everyone in the dark side was taking the piss.

When I came here I realised this was far more 'me' and joined and stayed.

If this isnt the type of place that suits someone's personality they have the option of not joining.

BeMorePanda · 12/09/2016 07:41

Are there less "this is not a BF vs FF" threads now, or am I just better at ignoring them now my youngest is 5?

WannaBe · 12/09/2016 08:02

I've been here for eleven years as well, and "MN isn't what it used to be," threads have been ever thus.

But I'm afraid I agree with.a PP that the atmosphere on here has definitely changeD from one where people could be robust in disagreeing with someone to one where outright nastiness abounds and is even something which the site owners are proud of. AIBU isn't the most popular board for no reason - it's the most popular board because people are widely accepted, and even encouraged to be as awful to other posters on there as is possible.

It should never be the case that a poster is told that if they post in one place people will be nice to them whereas if they post somewhere else they shouldn't be surprise if they are virtually ripped to shreds.

The reason why newbies gravitate to aibu is because it's the topic which comes up most in active.

As for BF vs FF debates. TBH I think these have reduced because the militant breast feeders have grown up and those who have replaced them have realised that there is a lot more to life than breast milk. Wink.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 12/09/2016 08:14

I found the acronym list on full site but can't find it anymore on mobile.
I still get confused when people write AF as I don't know if they mean Auntie Flo (cringe) or Anyfucker !

Medicaltextbook · 12/09/2016 08:22

I don't mind the swearing - shouldn't be here if I did, just go of the site.

I would be interesting in there being a thread/section where there won't be swearing so that there is a place for people less keen on it. Again though if that's not the case and you are that upset, just find another board. (Sorry if this is unpopular/been mentioned many times before. I'd probably be classed as new.)

I like a moan, and I don't mind newbies

But as PP mentioned, text speak and block text posts make me Angry - so I close them down and don't post. Life's too short to decipher shit posting.

WheelofPan · 12/09/2016 09:05

Yep Wizard. The OP that says "a woman looked at me funny in the checkout queue ".......wouldn't have got a sniff. Now it's 500 posts with lots of swearing!!
