WTF do I do??

2 bats are doing laps of my bedroom ceiling.

DH is unconcerned.

I have retreated to the bathroom.

Oh fuck.

Ah French bats probably do have rabies so yes be careful

Don't get bitten or scratched

MadHattersWineParty · 05/09/2016 23:19

I would love to have a bath in my bedroom, I love them.

Definitely will be protected, all the uk species are.

They ought to fly out the windows towards the dark for the bugs, or you have to do as PP said and slide them out very carefully once roosted. Mind their lovely little wings!

If they don't go you have to call the BatMan.

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 05/09/2016 23:19

They've gone! It was touch and go (another one flew IN) but they're gone. Oh my life.

I thought I spied droppings on the bed but DH identified the particles as crumbs from his secret bedtime chocolate snack.

Thanks everyone!

Bath?!!! Bat!!

Oh I think French bats probably are more likely to carry rabies

WhoseBadgerIsThis · 05/09/2016 23:20

Not wanting to be the voice of doom, but yeah, they carry a version of rabies and if you get scratched/bitten you MUST contact a doctor IMMEDIATELY. More info here: www.gov.uk/guidance/rabies-in-bats

I would love to have a bath in my bedroom, I love them.

I would love to have a bath in my bedroom too. Alas, I just don't have the space.

I think I'd be able to accommodate a family of bats though. Wink

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 05/09/2016 23:21

We turned on all the lights and they flew out of the window. The window is now closed so we may be too warm but needs must.

Thank god we didn't need the towel.

I've aged ten years.

Open all the windows wide, turn off the lights, leave the bedroom, close the door. They should find their own way out. If not, scoop them up by covering them with a towel and put the towel outside (not screwed up so tightly they can't escape).

Good luck!

Niggit · 05/09/2016 23:25

Oops, crossposted. Sorry!

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 05/09/2016 23:26

I have found a dropping 😱

Send them my way! I love bats. Rescued one the other day. SO cute.

user1471525998 · 05/09/2016 23:26

Bats are not rodents more closely related to primates and lemurs

LineyReborn · 05/09/2016 23:27

Les battys français sont magnifiques.

thenightsky · 05/09/2016 23:29

We had one all tangled between the window and the wooden blinds. It found its way into the room around 5am and woke us up rattling the blinds. It then whizzed around like an acrobat till it got tired and dropped to the floor where DH cupped it in his hands and popped it out of the window. I felt so sorry for the poor little thing, gasping its breath, exhausted and scared Sad

RustyPaperclip · 05/09/2016 23:32

Bats are lovely little things. Sadly my Bengal cat got hold of one last weekSad

Enidblyton1 · 05/09/2016 23:36

We had a bat in our room the other night. We opened the window wider and opened the curtains (and slept with the duvet right over my head - sweltering!!). It flew out eventually.....

Puddington · 05/09/2016 23:45

Bats are quite lovely and I was delighted to see some up close when I was sitting outside a bar on holiday last year... but I have to admit I'd probably panic if one found its way into my bedroom and I couldn't get it out! Glad your evening had a calm(ish) ending OP.

TattyCat · 05/09/2016 23:46

I had this some years ago. The curtains were closed but the windows open. I though there was a sudden breeze... then a bat appeared. We both panicked and hid under the sheet wondering what the hell to do. ExDP got up and opened the curtains but that alone wasn't enough.

I noticed that the more we moved and talked, the faster it flew, so we turned out the light, got under the sheet and kept quiet and still, and within 10 mins it was gone.

nocoolnamesleft · 05/09/2016 23:47

Oh fuck, yes, French ones could easily have rabies (la rage, or tolwut if you head over the border to Germany). Do not risk getting bitten. If their is any hint that either of you has been bitter, get the fuck to hospital. Rabies can be prevented, even after the bite, but it can't be effectively treated once the symptoms appear. And it is reckoned to be a bloody nasty way to die.

PapaverSomniferum · 06/09/2016 00:18

Only read the OP.

Open the curtains and windows, turn off the lights and go downstairs for half an hour or so. Once they calm down they'll be able to find their way out of the window.

PapaverSomniferum · 06/09/2016 00:20

DO NOT TRY TO CATCH THEM. You're likely to injure them and you're breaking the law. Plus, there's a very tiny theoretical chance of them passing on rabies if they bite or scratch you.

PapaverSomniferum · 06/09/2016 00:29

Ok read the thread now and seen that they've gone. Sorry - panicked when I saw posts calling them flying rats and rodents, and suggesting catching them or waving a broom at them. Hmm Glad there were sensible replies too.

In France it's more than a tiny theoretical risk of rabies; as others have pointed out, far more carry EBLV on the continent. Never handle them with your bare hands like I did last week.

One thing, though... I would check the curtains and anywhere else they could be hiding before going to bed. We thought a bat had left the house last week and then when we went to bed it was flying round the landing. :-D

Witchend · 06/09/2016 00:45

I was surprised to find a bat under our bed, earlier.

It was yellow.

And plastic and I assume ds left it there when he upgraded to a wooden one.

steff13 · 06/09/2016 00:53

Here (US) they tell you that if you find a bat in your house, you need to be checked over by a doctor, because bat bites are so small you can be bitten and not even feel it.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 06/09/2016 03:31

Yay, they're out! You get sleep, bats get freedom, happiness all around!
