Knife blocks. Tell me to woman up

We need new knives as I do loads of cooking and we have a rag tag selection of broken and cheap bendy ones.
I've been on Amazon looking at knives and knife blocks.
I can't get beyond thinking of murder mystery and horror films where a character notices a knife is missing from the knife block.
I am being very silly aren't I?

I've never considered this but now I want to FREAK. OUT. and throw out knife block away! I think I'll put it to DH that it's for child safety...

We don't have one either, but only because we have a kitchen rule of having nothing on the sides except for the stupid kettle I'd happily bin.
Our regular sharp knives live in their own drawer and the wanky ones live in their boxes lined with velvet in another drawer!

We have a magnetic one high up on a wall. Hanging behind pots & pans... You'd have to know where to look.

This has never ever occurred to me. But we do have a knife missing from our block..

oyster did you lose it in January to a cake carrier with leftover chocolate gingerbread?

A magnetic knife holder would be my knife-holder of choice, were I to have one.

Had a knife block years ago. It got absolutely minging. Dusty, claggy, greasy lump of space-stealing wood.

This below appeals to my inner-minimalist.

I have a magnetic knife strip that hangs on the wall. We don't have the counter space for a knife block.

Fasterthan I don't think you should be putting your Global knives in the dishwasher!

I also have two knife blocks. And a collection of sharps knives in the drawer. I suddenly feel like I'm asking for trouble. Perhaps if I moved them out of the kitchen so potential killers without their own weapons won't know where to look and I'll have the upper hand?

I have never worried about my knife block before.

I am now.

I might put it in the cupboard.

And seconding casual, my DF goes spare if anyone puts his knives (from his magnetic strip) anywhere near a dishwasher for fear of them being blunted?

Knifeblocks were mentioned recently on here on a thread of irredeemably naff things nobody has anymore
was quite miffed as we had recently got one with a nice new set of proper knives
anyhow, need I remind you all that there was no knifeblock at Blossom Hill Cottage Grin so their dangers are over stated.

Yeah, you're supposed to hand wash your knives.

Knife blocks are very bad feng shui.

Well, there's no way I'll be getting one now. Two real murders(horrific I know, so don't want to sound flippant), they're dirty, naff and don't even look good.

I have a lovely old-ish one from Habitat, looks like a polished pretty log. And a number of well balanced Sabatier knives. Massive foodie, never found a better way to store my babies.
P.S: They do say, if you are ever attacked in your own home, do try and lead the attacker to your kitchen as you alone will be the expert of where all the deadly weapons are ... Grin

I have a magnetic rack in the kitchen. If there are burglars, I like to know where the serious knives actually are. Grin

Well I never! I had no idea my knife block was
a) naff
b) bad feng shui
c) rendering us likely to attract murderous burglars

I just thought it was handy.

There's been a knife missing from our block for years now. H thinks he threw it away accidentally? Should I believe him ? Not sure now ...

Well timed thread. Went on holiday and realised our knives are indeed rubbish as my Mum had said, I've just bought a knife about half an hour ago and was looking at blocks but worrying about exactly this. Knife will live in a drawer now.

I bought some from Costco that are all in plastic sleeves so I can safely chick them in the drawer. I much prefer it.
