To never travel on public transport again

Slightly lighthearted.

Am on a ferry home from a very relaxing, peaceful two weeks in France.

Nice drive up to Calais

Am now in Hell. Confused

There isn't anywhere to sit which doesn't smell (toilets, cafe food), can hear the kids play area all over.

Also there are loads of people sprawled across the seats - shoes up on tables and chairs. Ugh.

Tunnel next time.

YANBU. I've only used it a handful of times in the past few years and I'm a much happier person for it.

I just can't deal with people's selfishness and lack of consideration.

Needs must.

Definitely bringing noise cancelling headphones next time.

They don't even sell decent beer at the cafe

Eurotunnel is your friend.

We were on it last week and both remarked how lovely and civilised it was compared to our previous experience when a mum changed a really dirty nappy in the middle of the play area ...

This is why we always pay for a cabin! Snooze in a bed with a pillow and duvet, your own shower and loo too. However normally go with Brittany ferries - not sure if the Dover Calais ferries have them...

YANBU. Hell may be other people, but the inner most fiery circle of hell is other people on public transport.

YANBU at all. I'm not a snob and generally think live and let live, but on our only ever ferry crossing with DCs it was like being lowered into Dante's 4th circle of hell, which smelled violently of sick, feet and arse. I can live without it.

This might be slightly off the ferry topic but is about public transport. I was on a train the person next to me was huge, fat, enormous. She put the seat rest up so she could spread onto my seat. I put it down and she said it was not comfortable. I showed her my ticket and said if she paid me the full amount that I'd paid for me seat I'd move. The following four hour journey was not fun but her arse was not on my seat.
We need to speak out. (now waiting to be flamed)

Isn't the Chunnel public transport too?

YANBU to never cross the Channel by ferry though. That's only fun for school groups. Grin

Tunnel - filthy, stinky, no sign of the sea. Never again!

We tend to use the tunnel for travelling to France now. The few ferry crossings we did before that were just hideous. It was like all the awful, selfish, disgusting fuckers with the least control over their kids in the UK had decided to congregate on one boat.

Oh I quite enjoy the ferry. We took the tunnel for the first time last year and found it highly depressing.

The ferry to Holland is much more civilised. Doesn't smell and is overnight so you sleep in a comfortable bed and wake up ready for a holiday.

I've done ferry crossings and SeaCat ( much preferred the Seacat, I don't travel well on water though I wasn't sick)
Unlike a couple who troughed Rice Crispies then CBA going out to throw up, they just sat spewing up in the sick bags.

Euuwwwww
Some of you had a worse experience than I did!

Dover to Calais is only 90 mins otherwise I would have booked a cabin.

Tunnel is good as you can just sit in your own car for 30 mins. No socialising necessary.

Ah well. Private jet next time?

Travel to and from France regularly.
We have used all the routes and I must say I prefer the western ferry routes.
The tunnel - stuck in the car, nothing to look at, all you can do is a quick turn round the carriage a a visit to the loo ( filthy and smelly last time). However, boarding was quick and there was a proper dog exercise area to "empty" the dogs before setting off.

Dover - Calais. To get there we have to use the m25. Enough said. I once heard the boats described as tin cans where they throw chips at you. I think the catering has improved since then, but last time I wasn't impressed. We used to use Speedferries before they went bust, cheap and fast.

Newhaven - Dieppe. This used to be Transmanche ferries, now run by DFS. Ime the boats are a bit grubby, catering dreadful and not enough cabins although it's been a couple of years so it may have improved Finally, the sailing times are awful, the "overnight" sailing docks at 4am or similar stupid o'clock.
One point in their favour, if you are under 25 or over 65 you get a substantial discount if you phone up to book.

Western channel routes. Operator Brittany ferries. Nice boats, plenty of cabins, the self service cafe is ok, but the restaurant is lovely, I recommend going for the buffet starter plus buffet desert option. I have eaten my own body weight in salmon starters and gooey cake.......
On the surface they look make 're expensive, but they take us nearer to where we want to go, so with less driving, fewer motor way tolls plus a proper rest on the boat (we always have a cabin) it works for us. Personally I avoid the fast cat to Cherbourg - it's not called the vomit comet for nothing!

Mind you, I like boats, and am never sick. We have eaten in the restaurant and had to hold the plates still while not letting go of the wine glass...difficult, but we managed.

Tunnel all the way, although Dover-Calais always works better for us than the return. Always some sort of delay in Calais.

Ferry= vomit and stench. Eurostar= late, you'll miss your connection. Plane= packed and they lose your luggage. All shit. Drink is the only solution. Start beforeyou set off.

The tunnel is 30-odd minutes and you can sit in your car. I use the loos in the terminal beforehand, but the couple of times I've needed to use them en route, they've been fine. Never had a problem with it being late either - in fact we've often been able to get on an earlier one.
