Slightly lighthearted.

Am on a ferry home from a very relaxing, peaceful two weeks in France.

Nice drive up to Calais

Am now in Hell. Confused

There isn't anywhere to sit which doesn't smell (toilets, cafe food), can hear the kids play area all over.

Also there are loads of people sprawled across the seats - shoes up on tables and chairs. Ugh.

Tunnel next time.

I don't think of eurotunnel as 'posh', just a case of having a more relaxing journey, if you book early enough there is not much price difference compared to the ferry. Generally I just don't find the ferry very relaxing, excitable kids running about, constant announcements on the PA, hard to find seats sometimes when selfish pricks use whole sofas to sleep on, loud pissed people wondering about etc.

We usually go Dover-Calais with P&O and they have a 'first-class' lounge which you can book into for (I forget) £5 or £10 pp. Quiet, comfortable and with the added joy of being with naice people.

i think the ferry adds up when they all want to go to the gift shop, or you want to buy drinks/food onboard

I nearly started a thread like this after our last trip, Dieppe-Newhaven, where we managed to get some of those plane type seats in the quiet lounge area where everyone tries to sleep. Normally people bag spare seats with bags/coats etc as don't want strangers next to them, but as most just want to sleep I don't care who is next to me.
However, one family sat there and let their toddler scream blu murder the entire trip. I tried to have sympathy for them but we really needed to sleep to be safe driving. The kids play area was open (kids in there playing and watching cartoons) and space in other areas to walk around/move to- but no, they kept everyone awake by just letting that child scream for 4 hours and not attempting to walk around at all. DH wanted to go and ask them to move and was sooo grumpy all the way home.
The cabins had all been booked (we tried when booking tickets) and I wouldn't moan if it had been in any other part of the ferry, but to allow that when it was the seleeping area was not on.

I can imagine that Bran, mine are too young for all that at the mo'. Meals are often very expensive too but we usually take food because we're tight!

Aberdeen to Lerwick is a delightful route - never seen so much travel sickness! It's a tad rough on the North Sea
We did book a cabin though, so could shut ourselves away.

This is why I will only cross the channel by the tunnel - own car to sit in, own music to listen to and can eat my own food.

We did do a day trip via the ferry this summer (DH booked it, definitely not me!) and it was crowded, noisy and busy and the queue for the coffee was huge. Not to mention that you can feel the waves constantly - I am not a good boat passenger!
