AIBU?

To think a menstrual cup has changed my life, just an incy bit.

I'm late to trying one always having thought that it would be a bit yucky. I've finally tried one and after a few attempts at different brands I've now found one that works for me......its revolutionary! Today on holiday I've barely had to think about my period. It's my heaviest day and we've been to the beach. I haven't needed to empty it once. With a tampon I would have needed to bring extras with me and would have worried about them leaking. I feel liberated (couldn't find a suitable forum to talk about this so dumped in aibu, sorry)!

Just wanted to say to anyone who either didn't know about them or thinking of trying, do it!

It's bad enough that I don't need to sniff it up close.

I did remember reading you should rinse it first with cold water before washing with hot water, same as with blood stains on clothes, so maybe try that and see if it helps?

The only time I had a smell like that was when I accidentally left it in for too long. Could it be that? In which case bin it and start again

booboo if it's leaking then you probably don't have a good seal? I found the only time I don't leak is if I use the punch down fold. You could try a different fold to normal?
If not try a different cup?

Yes I've had a horrible smell like that when I've left it in for too long - over 24 hours will do it. It's happened to me a couple of times at the end of a period and I've simply just forgotten it's there and not had sex and then suddenly I remember and when I take it out, it's awful.

How often are you emptying it?

I really, really wanted it to work but I found it impossible.

I found it really uncomfortable to insert, it felt like I had to get almost my entire hand up there to get it in properly. Even then, I could feel it. I chopped off the stem and that kind of helped but it still felt really uncomfortable. I looked through so much advice online but it didn't help. And I chose the smaller of the two sizes despite having had a baby.

I wish I didn't waste my money now. I really wanted it to work as I find the first few days of my period very icky at night time and end up getting up at 5am to change pads/tampons. I was hoping the cup would solve this but unfortunately not.

You don't need to bin it if that happens though. Just give it a really good wash.

I can get rid of the smell by boiling it. So I think I am getting it clean.
Seems that my body and cup react to make this deadly smell.
I've never left it In a long time or forgotten.

Maybe I should try a different brand !

I tried a mooncup 10 years ago and it leaked, I gave up on it after a few cycles. This year after reading threads on MN I decided to try again. I did a comparison online and bought a viva cup. It's enlightening!
I no longer need painkillers, I use a panty liner just in case, and I'm going to switch to washable ones when I run out. My period is much shorter, it seems it all just flows out more quickly and easily.

I love my mooncup. I converted over a decade ago and haven't looked back.

Not wanting to be rude but do you perhaps have an infection? Have you noticed the smell at other times, perhaps with discharge between periods? Has your partner commented? Sometimes something like bacterial vaginosis can occur without any irritation, just the smell, and it can be more common when you have a coil fitted.

If it really is only the cup, that is bizarre. I think I would be tempted to ask my GP because it doesn't seem normal if it's happening when you're emptying it regularly.

Booboo I had terribly leakage problems with the moon cup - it just made using it impossible. After seeking advice on here, I investigated other brands and now use a Diva Cup. It is softer and I always am able to position it correctly whereas I just couldn't get it right with the Moon Cup for some reason. I do have leakage still on my one heaviest night so just use a pad for that. Otherwise, its absolutely brilliant! I would give a different brand a whirl and see what happens.

Thanks dontpoke and cora! I will try a different brand, i so want it to work! Even when it leaks it's a million times better than tampons, I was going through so many every day. Plus added bonus that my period is a day shorter for some reason. I'm a total convert!

Hi Bertie
Not rude at all. I assumed not as I only get the smell when on a period and it's much enhanced when using the cup as the cup seems to absorb the smell.
Asked gp once and she said copper coil does weird things and can cause the smell.

Maybe I should ask about it again. Different GP too so probably worth the question.

I'm not sure you should use antibacterial hand wash? I don't use anything but water/hot water. Maybe try without any soap/chemicals?

I've been using mine about 3 months now. I've got a mooncup and I much prefer it, I change mine every 4 hours and manage totally fine at work just a wipe round with tissue and pop it back in.
It hasn't shortened my periods ( currently on day 8 of current one) but they have made them easier to deal with.
My only problem is that in the morning if it's been in all night it seems to shuffle it's way quite far up my foof which turns me into a contortionist in the morning.
But even with that little issue its still amazing 😀

My periods are lighter and considerably less painful than they used to be. I switched to a mooncup and washable pads after my second baby, so can't vouch for if it's the sanpro or the changes to my body having an effect. Pre-children, my periods were very irregular, fairly heavy and very painful and had a notable flow for 8 days. Now I rarely need pain relief.

I always had a difficult time with tampons. After many years of intermittent attempts with tampons, I could finally use them if they were lubricated. The mooncup took a couple of uses to adjust to, but is considerably easier to use. I had to cut the stem off entirely.

I'm only doing back to disposable protection in an emergency!

Oh fair enough, if GP says it's nothing, it's probably nothing :)

UnderslungBowlingBall · 06/09/2016 12:42

It wasn't until I switched to cups and cloth pads that I realized I think I'm allergic to disposables because I used one for about 3 hours last cycle (started unexpectedly) and next day I had the most God awful itchy rash.
