AIBU?

To think a menstrual cup has changed my life, just an incy bit.

I'm late to trying one always having thought that it would be a bit yucky. I've finally tried one and after a few attempts at different brands I've now found one that works for me......its revolutionary! Today on holiday I've barely had to think about my period. It's my heaviest day and we've been to the beach. I haven't needed to empty it once. With a tampon I would have needed to bring extras with me and would have worried about them leaking. I feel liberated (couldn't find a suitable forum to talk about this so dumped in aibu, sorry)!

Just wanted to say to anyone who either didn't know about them or thinking of trying, do it!

I tried a mooncup years ago, but gave up (was worried about leaking).
Am interested in trying again but don't like the idea of having to change it at work. What is the longest time that you could go between changes/emptying? Thanks

I love mine and so wish I had tried one earlier. It wasn't until after dd was born so I was 36. I just think how much easier it would have been with a cup when I was younger. I will be talking to dd about them when the time us right. I will never go back to anything else and always tell my friends how great it is.

I've been tempted to try a cup. But how do you clean out the cup in public toilets at work? Or has anyone ever accidentally pulled the cup out like a plunger and flicked themselves with blood? Confused

I love mine! Much less issue with leaking (still a little on the first couple of days if I don't empty every 6ish hours) and the last few days of the period I can barely remember I'm on my period.

I've never accidentally flicked blood on me, just stick finger and thumb up to grab at the middle while sat on the loo and then it pulls out easy and tips straight down the loo. Or in the shower where it doesn't matter if it gets on you.

And definitely going to recommend it to DD when she has periods. She's seen me emptying it so knows about it already.

I'm intrigued and I've never even thought about trying one.
My periods are unpredictable and usually happen every 2 or 3 months. I never really know when I'm going to come on they just start suddenly. They're also different every time since having a baby so sometimes they are heavy and very painful and sometimes they're barely anything.

So let me get this right - you can put a mooncup in and just leave it all day? Are there no time limits where it must be taken out and cleaned?
Do they hurt when you put them in or take them out?

Report
Natsku · 02/09/2016 10:39

Don't hurt at all. You're supposed to take out and clean every 12 hours at least but otherwise no limits except for the extent of your flow.

yes they are amazing. I would really like to know whether / how they have the effect on my periods that they seem to - as others say - they seem to be shorter and gentler (less painful). (not sure about flow - have no way of measuring that - how much goes into a tampon relative to a cup?)

I was wondering whether it might be that tampons exacerbate periods by acting as a block, so you get crampier and the bleeding goes on for longer as it has nowhere to go?

(If people who report these improvements were using towels before, then that obviously doesn't work.)

Apparently towels and tampons do increase flow but I don't understand the science behind it.

Thanks natsku

I think I am going to get one! I have another 20 or so years of perioding to do and I actually do hate the faff of tampons and pads.

So should I get a mooncup or a diva cup? Are there some differences?

I got a lunette

Ohhh Ive been meaning to buy one for ages. I'm going to order one right now!

One thing I don't understand though is when people say you don't get cramps when using a Mooncup......how comes?

Report
CaurnieBred · 02/09/2016 11:11

No idea why you don't get cramps but I used to suffer badly from them when I used pads or tampons but that stopped when I switched to a Mooncup 16 years ago. Can't remember if it stopped immediately or if it happened gradually, but it def stopped at some point.

I recently tried to move over to menstrual cups but really don't get on that well with mine. I find it leaks - but I have horrific periods so can overflow it in 45 minutes - and is just a bit icky. Also I kinda misaligned it when putting it back in one time, moved it away from my body and managed to loosen my grip on it slightly so it pinged open. The blood on the end of it splattered me in the face. Back to tampons for me.

chocolate it might be too long, another brand might work better. You need to release suction before removal either by sticing your finger up the side of the cup or by squeezing the base.

thatwhite I change mine morning and night and it's fine. I did accidentally leave it in for a day once and that killed it - smelled like a dead thing and I couldn't get the smell out Sad

whatthe just tip into the toilet, wipe inside with tissue, put back in. It's fine. Doesn't need washing out every single time.

I'm on Amazon and there's some cracking reviews Grin

The first time you use a Mooncup (or any menstrual cup) can feel a) like you've been sucker-punched in the fanny and/or b) that a tiny, sharp-clawed alien has taken up residence in your hoochie. But - don't let this put you off! Come on - you've probably been through worse (gynae exams; cystitis; thrush; insensitive lovers; childbirth (for those using the larger size) - and, let's face it, nothing assaults your fandango quite like a baby punching its way out! So - go into this knowing YOU CAN DO IT. Or if you can't at least you gave it your best shot and it's a tale to tell your granddaughters some dark stormy night 20 years from now.

I love mine, best decision I ever made. I used to dread every month, but the cup is so liberating. I practically forget I am on my period. I am more comfortable, have less pain and it saves money. I just wish I'd switched years ago. I have a Mooncup.

BertieBotts · 02/09/2016 12:04

I can't use tampons BUT I love my cup. Don't discount it if you dislike tampons. It does however involve putting your fingers up your fanny, so if that's what bothers you about tampons, maybe it's not for you.

I originally bought size A but when I lost it I replaced it with a Meluna M which is smaller than Size B. I find it more comfy. There's a calculator on Meluna's website for different sizes.

I have also found a weird/convenient/slightly annoying thing.

After using a cup for 5+ years my body no longer releases menstrual fluid so easily. So if I need to use a pad for some reason I don't tend to flood it like I always used to, and when I sit on the toilet, it all comes out there. I can actually just wear pantyliners and use the toilet more often and deal with an entire period like that without using the cup at all if I want to.

Report
MaudlinNamechange · 02/09/2016 12:13

how is that annoying?
now you mention it.... I have had this. How does this happen?!

Report
ElphabaTheGreen · 02/09/2016 12:17

Once I get it in, it's great, no leaks, don't know it's in etc. I'd love to use it every month.

BUT I can't wee properly with one in! It's the same with tampons, so I have to remove it every time I need a wee, or sit there with an infuriating, uncomfortable trickle until my bladder is empty. This is especially annoying if I want a quick wee in the middle of the night. Under those circs, using a Mooncup just leaves me feeling bloody sore because getting it in and out several times a day is quite a job. Sad They're not cheap, either, so I'm not game to try different brands as I can't see the issue resolving since it's the same with tampons, which are a lot slimmer than any cup.

On another note...the first time getting it out. Did anyone else think they were going to have to present at A&E to request an embarrassing 'extraction'? By the Gods, that was a terrifying half hour. Blush
