I'm a complete ipod virgin, I've never possessed an mp3 player in it's own right iyswim of any kind.

As late as 2007 I was enquiring about cassettes in Currys!!
I've got a CD player in my car - but no CDs currently.

So, how many of you have iPods?

I've got an old school 120Gb iPod which I love- there's no way I'd be able to fit all my music on my phone! I do use Spotify on my phone most of the time but use my iPod for things like audiobooks, remixes and stuff I've ripped from YouTube. and Taylor Swift

Jillspa · 01/09/2016 06:46

Thanks for explaining the difference between all the iPod models - they all sound very different and are less of a mystery to me now!

I have a nano for the gym and long train journeys.

I can stick the iPod in my bra at the gym and not notice it as its tiny. Couldn't stick my phone in my bra.....well I could but it would be bulky and annoying.

mailfuckoff · 01/09/2016 06:51

I have an iPod classic which I think are now discontinued. I have my entire music collection on it (10000 plus tracks ) and it gets left in the car plugged in so I can listen to my music in the car. Sometimes gets bought into the office. Much more conveient then having a few tracks on a phone. I have lots of rare tracks - not sure how spotify is and how mainstream it is.

Astoria797 · 01/09/2016 06:54

I personally think they're a waste of money for someone who already has a smart phone/tablet- there are cheaper and more reliable music players in the market.

RestlessTraveller · 01/09/2016 06:54

I have an iPod touch (the one that looks pretty much like a phone). I love the it, I wouldn't have room for my music in my phone.

allegretto · 01/09/2016 06:57

I have the really small iPod without a screen that I use for running. I also have an old iPhone with barely any space for music.

spidey66 · 01/09/2016 07:15

I've got one as my phone hasn't enough storage for my music collection.

I don't understand how people are going online with them though?

megletthesecond · 01/09/2016 07:27

I still have a tiddly ipod shuffle which in use at the gym. It's so light I don't notice when it's clipped to my clothes.

Use my phone for running though.

BikeRunSki · 01/09/2016 07:35

I'd just be grateful for a branch of my bank within 25 miles. My 3 nearest have closed (rural, so the nearest of those was 7 miles away, albeit near free parking!) in the last 2 years or so.

BikeRunSki · 01/09/2016 07:35

Wrong thread!!!BlushSmile

JennyOnAPlate · 01/09/2016 07:41

I have a nano. I put my vast cd collection on it so I could get rid of the CDs! I don't actually listen to music much these days so kind of feel like a Spotify subscription would be a waste of money.

Whathaveilost · 01/09/2016 07:48

I have 2 iPod classics which I won't give up. I love them. The classic is quite a chunky model but I'm happy with it.

I use Soundcloud on my phone and iPad as well as Spotify.
Although I like using my phone for music when I'm out my battery gets eaten as I also use it for FB, photos and digital radio ( hardly ever make phone call, funnily enough) so the iPod in the car is a must!

PNGirl · 01/09/2016 08:02

Spidey the Touch has wifi.

GemmaB78 · 01/09/2016 08:07

I have the shuffle. It's the teeny, tiny one without a screen. I use it for running/walking/mucking out as I can't stand heavy devices.

Isetan · 01/09/2016 08:12

iPod touch and iPhones are virtually the same except the iPhone has the ability to make phone calls.

I still use an old IPod touch as a dedicated MP3 player (I use it far more than my phone and having a seperate unit helps with battery usage) and use my IPad for everything else but it really depends on how you intend using it. It's probable that Apple will phase out the iPod Touch because there are no plans to introduce new ones or add the latest to the new iOS release, which will bring down the price but they will still be on the high end price wise for MP3 players. As an existing iPhone user the big draw of the IPod Touch over the other iPods is that the interfaces are exactly the same and there won't be any frustrations about learning a new interface. In addition, if you do go the IPod Touch route, do get the biggest capacity you can get.

It probably makes more sense depending on your iPhone capacity and the number of MP3's you intend adding (known as syncing), to add them to your existing iPhone, for which you will need a computer/ laptop with mp3's stored on it.

If you're really stuck you can go to an Apple Store or one of the big electrical chains that sell them for more advice.

If you have a smartphone I probably wouldn't bother with a separate mp3 player unless you have a vast collection of music on your computer that you want to take with you. What phone do you have op? I definitely wouldn't go to the expense of an iPod.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 01/09/2016 08:23

Oh sorry, just read the thread properly. I see you have an iPhone.

If you want a separate mp3 player (and battery life can be an issue on iPhones) do you have an old smartphone knocking about? You can use that as a separate player. Plus as it has WiFi and apps, if you wanted to go down the Spotify route you could use it for that too.

For music in the car I have copies of all my ancient CD's in two formats, USB stick and ipod.

I always use the ipod because ipod playlists mean I just have to select one of about eight lists to have several hours of music play through, with nothing being repeated.

The only advantage of the memory stick is that the album covers show up on the car display, for some reason they don't with the ipod. (Apparently they could be made to with the right ipod and cable, but they don't for me.)

The CD's are on lossless format on the ipod. There is such a thing as lossless MP3 for the USB stick, but the car player doesn't recognise it, so my MP3s had to be created using a lossy version.

It is theoretically possibly to set up MP3 playlists on the memory stick, but I was unable to emulate what I do with the ipod. (Not sure I ever got them working at all.)

My phone is already in service for navigation and phone calls in the car, so it wouldn't be convenient to use it for music as well. (Also it would mean data charges for streaming music which would be much more expensive. All music is available on phone, mp3s having been uploaded to Google player, but I would only use phone for music where there was free wifi.)

Theoretician · 01/09/2016 08:38

My ipod classic 80gb was bought off ebay about 12 years ago, so is older than that. It's still the best option for the car.

Jillspa · 01/09/2016 08:55

LikeDylan - I have an iPhone 6.

Just to give some context - I only got home internet in 2009 - and I've NEVER actually downloaded music onto a laptop!! When I first got broadband and a laptop - I used to listen to all music I liked on YouTube.

In 2011 I got an iPad and downloaded some iTunes music onto that - then 2003 I got the iPhone 4 and downloaded loads of music again from iTunes. So I completely bypassed the iPod stage and went straight from CDs to downloading onto my smartphone!!

LikeDylan - I used to have a 'spare' smartphone but unfortunately got rid of it!

Ahhhh I see! I guess if you already have iTunes and an iPhone it would make sense. Just out of interest, what makes you want a separate mp3 player now?

Namechangenurseryconcerns · 01/09/2016 09:10

I've got an iPod classic that I bought over 8 years ago. It's got all the Harry Potter audio books on which is the main reason I've kept it as well as a lot of (pre 2008) music!

Tartsamazeballs · 01/09/2016 10:38

iPods and MP3 players in of themselves are a bit passé IMO. We mostly stream Pandora/Amazon prime/Spotify/YouTube to speakers via chromecast or Sonos, or use iPhone when out and about.
