Pardon?

AIBU to not bother with the word "Pardon" for my young children? It seems like a generational thing to me but my parents and in laws correct my young children when they ask "What?"

I was just curious what the expectation is nowadays, should I be teaching them 'pardon'? Is it bad manners not to Confused

I say 'what'.

'Pardon' doesn't sound quite right to me. Almost like you're challenging them over what they said. It always sounds quite aggressive to me.

RawPrawn · 31/08/2016 19:24

Where do we stand on 'pardon me' after belching or parping?

Say nothing.

If you're belching or farting in company 'pardon' isn't going to help.

WhooooAmI24601 · 31/08/2016 19:25

I say 'excuse me?' and pretend that I'm classy when actually I'm as rough as a badgers arse.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 31/08/2016 19:25

I say 'excuse me' after a fart. I can't burp. Genetic freak.

thestamp · 31/08/2016 19:25

Pardon is non-U, i.e. a "working class" expression. It's supposed to be a sign of being from the servant class, that the speaker is attempting to put on airs by using a word borrowed from the French, rather than using a nice solid Anglo word. (Not my opinion but that's the reasoning!)

What is considered U. I.e., the upper classes use it.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U_and_non-U_English

It's a thing unfortunately.

My mother taught me "pardon" but I don't use it. I usually say, "sorry what was that?" or "I didn't catch that?"

KondosSecretJunkRoom · 31/08/2016 19:27

Pah,

Pardon and ta are fine. If you cannot accept these verbal acts of courtesy because they don't fit your particular class or regional approval then you are a twat.

RawPrawn · 31/08/2016 19:27

I think 'come again?' is due a revival.

BertrandRussell · 31/08/2016 19:28

Pardon? Is common

What? What did you say? Sorry? I beg your pardon? are all fine.

I beg your pardon or Excuse me in the unlikely event of a fart or a belch happens in public.

crayfish · 31/08/2016 19:29

I say 'say again?' for some reason, I don't even know why but 'come again?' was popular when I was growing up.

sophiestew · 31/08/2016 19:29

Ooh yes raw "Come again" is superb!! Grin

user1471734618 · 31/08/2016 19:30

" I beg your pardon or Excuse me in the unlikely event of a fart or a belch happens in public"

now THAT is common, darling, common as muck.

Natsku · 31/08/2016 19:34

Skip the 'pardon' and grin and say 'better out than in eh?'

xexxsy · 31/08/2016 19:38

"Excuse me" for loud belches and farts.

"Sorry"for the old "Pardon" seems to work for everything else

At least I try to be polite!

Hate when nothing is said. Princess syndrome I suppose. La de dah.

WalrusGumboot · 31/08/2016 19:39

Simply 'eh?' usually works for me.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 31/08/2016 19:40

I think the correct phrase after farting is "more tea vicar?"

I remember prompting my youngest when he received a present with "What do you say?"
He looked a bit confused before announcing "Pardon me." Grin

FlyingElbows · 31/08/2016 19:48

Pardon is right up there with "toilet", "settee", "lounge" and, worst of all, "myself". This message is brought to you by my mother and her outrageous middle class snobbery Grin

" At least I try to be polite! "

how can drawing attention to your farts and burps be 'polite'?

SnotGoblin · 31/08/2016 19:54

I can't stand the 'sorry' thing.

Ohflippinheck · 31/08/2016 19:55

I'm owning it.
Pardon me for blowing my nose on a serviette while I use the lavvy.

Ohflippinheck · 31/08/2016 19:57

I'm just having my dinner (lunch) on the settee in the lounge watching telly.

user1471734618 · 31/08/2016 19:57

flippineck...like when my kids went to bro's MIL's and exclaimed loudly about the 'two toilets' -it was hilarious just to see my brother's nostrils twitch uncontrollably. Now I say 'lounge' all the time just to annoy him.

99littleducks · 31/08/2016 20:00

I'm surprised to find on MN that "Pardon?" is common but "What?" is ok... It must be a regional thing as "What?" would be considered as rude here in East London!

It has been pointed out that "Toilet" is common. What's the non common term? Bathroom, loo, restroom?

Ohflippinheck · 31/08/2016 20:01

user I love the word lounge, it sounds classy. Like duvet.

StarryIllusion · 31/08/2016 20:04

Only posh people say pardon round here. I was always brought up to say it but hardly ever do. It is usually What in this house although dp's parents despair of us and think we are all dreadfully common though they have mostly given up correcting us. Kids are too young yet to say anything, eldest only 2. When we fart it is usually Excuse me or hysterical laughter depending on how impressive it was.

I too hate the whole Ta thing. Twee and irritating.
