First big shopping trip with 3 week old - and 11 and 9 year old.

Went to Halfords to get better car seat (turned out mine was fine). The shop wss full of fumes so left sleeping 3 year old i cat seat putside o shop front with 11 nearly 12 year old for about 3 mins tops. Paid for new seat, raced back outside shop, and waited for staff to bring seat out. Explained it was too fumey to them and got them to do paperwork

Please tell me that was an ok thing to do with my 11/13 year old and baby. Feel like a confused new mum! So stressed!

Our local Halfords is titchy and yes, sometimes stinks of solvent based spray depending on what someone is fixing somewhere in the shop (they have no real outdoor space for that).

I've been in there long enough to get a headache so I wouldn't leap to the conclusion that the OP is being precious just becuase YOU'VE never experienced similar!

IzzyIsBusy · 29/08/2016 17:04

Leaving you baby with an 11 yo outside the shop for 10 minutes is fine.

The you freaking out about the fumes is OTT.
You do know the car and exhaust fumes your baby breathed in while sat outside the shop is much worse than the lubricant spray they probably used on the bike.

You need to chill out. It isnt healthy.

freakedoutlady · 29/08/2016 17:05

When the fumes cleared I took 3 week old i shop. I just wanted to judge what other mums thought about leaving sleeping babies in car seats outside shops with mature older children for a few minutes.

Sounds fine to me.

AndYourBirdCanSing · 29/08/2016 17:09

It's fine OP- Your baby was just outside the shop with their nearly 12 year old sibling. I had a similar age gap with my little brother and it wouldn't have been a problem at all.

Try and give yourself a break FlowersCake

freakedoutlady · 29/08/2016 17:12

Thanks ladies. Feel much better now. Although I think I need to address my worrying. Hopefully it's a new mum thing. Was an age ago that I had a baby and life is v. Different now. Thanks for your comments xxx

It's fine, you're doing fine.

And people snarking at the mother of a tiny new baby who knows she's been a bit neurotic, have a think about whether you're making a positive contribution to anything.

bakeoffcake · 29/08/2016 17:16

I think the fact you took a 3 week old and a 9 and 11 year old shopping is amazing. I didint leave the house for weeks!

Silvercatowner · 29/08/2016 17:21

Of course it wasn't. Sounds like you're a bit paranoid. She's got a 3 weeker - she's allowed to be a bit paranoid. Don't be so judgy.

eightbluebirds · 29/08/2016 17:21

Responsible child, waiting just outside the shop? Totally fine, don't worry!

Silvercatowner · 29/08/2016 17:21

trafalgargal · 29/08/2016 17:24

This is your third child ?
Did you have the same levels of anxiety with the older two as babies ?

Like you, I had a big age gap between DCs 2 and 3 and, like you, I lost my nerve a bit - felt like everyone expected me to know what I was doing and actually I had no idea. It was like being a first time mum again but with people assuming I was confident. But it's like riding a bike - it'll all come back and you'll be fine. And yes, you made the right call.

Silvercatowner · 29/08/2016 17:29

Did you have the same levels of anxiety with the older two as babies ? Seriously, what is that adding to this conversation???

user7755 · 29/08/2016 17:31

What bakeoffcake said.

I understand now what you mean about fumes, it sounds a bit like when those nail places stink - I wouldn't take a baby in there either but that's a whole other thread Wink

LunaLoveg00d · 29/08/2016 17:32

I think your anxiety about this situation is hugely out of proportion.

Flum · 29/08/2016 17:33

This rounds fine. I thinkan 11 year old is perfectly capable of looking after a small baby for a while, whilst your re in the shop. no worries. Keep on trucking.

Silvercatowner · 29/08/2016 17:34

I think your anxiety about this situation is hugely out of proportion. And....?

Can I second Rosie

The micro scrutiny people are under today!

Thank fuck the Internet and camera phones weren't around to see my perfect parenting...

PersianCatLady · 29/08/2016 17:37

I think that you totally did the right thing by not leaving them in the car and not taking them into Halfords.

Some PPs have said that they don't understand what you mean about fumey but I totally understand what you mean.

I would much rather a child was left outside in the fresh air than exposed to either solvent or paint fumes.

Stop panicking because you are doing fine.

pullingmyhairout1 · 29/08/2016 17:38

It's fine. Honestly I don't think anyone believes it's a problem. If the baby had started wailing or got upset I'm sure either your 11 or 9 year old is capable of giving34 0nz you a shout.

Purplebluebird · 29/08/2016 17:41

I'd say that's fine with your older kids! And relaaax... :)
