Is DH U or am I paranoid? Locking doors at night

Spiderpigspiderpig · 28/08/2016 23:00

We live in a bungalow. Front door and back door are on the left of the building and are opposite each other... Hallway & kitchen between them. We have another external door at the back on far right handside of building in ds room. So 2 rear external doors & 1 front one. The one in ds room is closest to all of the other bedrooms.

Before be Dh prefers to lock all door and hang keys up in kitchen.

I prefer to lock doors but leave all keys in locks.

His argument is that a burgular will smash a window and reach the key, so it's not safe to do this.

My argument is that if there's a fire we'll be trapped in the house as we won't be able to get to keys. Our windows don't open enough to climb through.

Who is bu?

Get yourself a window breaking tool...big, metal pole thing they are. You could need one anyway...what it the fire was int he way of your bedroom door?

Ginkypig · 28/08/2016 23:19

Would having the key in the door invalidate the insurance?

I don't know iv never thought about it but this thread has made me wonder

Ginkypig · 28/08/2016 23:22

Mine open from the bottom out the way but the insurance company told me if they were unlocked when someone broke in they wouldn't pay so the key is close by but they stay locked. (When not open obviously.

Spiderpigspiderpig · 28/08/2016 23:23

Good idea violet thanks.
Not sure ginky wouldn't have thought so but will check

Thanks ginky better start locking my windows, although I'd be pretty impressed by anyone attempting to go through our window opening

Keep them near the door. A family died near me as they couldn't get the keys in time to unlock the door in a fire.

JellyBelli · 28/08/2016 23:25

Never leave a key in the door. They can superglue a rod to it and open the door.
Never hang keys where they can be reached by a fishing rod through the letter box.
Keep them with you in your bedroom in case of emergency.

Airandmungbeans · 28/08/2016 23:29

I'm with you DH. We lock all doors and take the keys up to bed with us, that way they're to hand in an emergency and out of reach of any potential burglers. We have also been warned by the police that our area is a bit of a target for break-ins where they only take your car keys and then nick your car. Better safe than sorry.

NapQueen · 28/08/2016 23:29

Can you get a "sneck" lock fitted to the doors instead? Our back door has a traditional key lock but we hang the keys in the same room.

Other doors have snecks so they just lock shut but can be turned to u lock from inside without a key.

Airandmungbeans · 28/08/2016 23:30

*burglars

snowgirl1 · 28/08/2016 23:30

I like having keys in the lock, except in the front door as I know there's a risk someone could try to get them via the letterbox. The front door keys are on a hook inside the cupboard next to the door.

Ankleswingers · 28/08/2016 23:32

Lord no, please don't leave the keys in the door. Dsis did this and thieves broke in and took the car keys for my Dbil brand new Mercedes. Not good.

Take them out for safety, better to be safe than sorry.

Sparklesilverglitter · 28/08/2016 23:33

Keys shouldn't be left in doors. put them on a hook right near the door.

We keep a spare set on the dressing table in our bedroom and the other sets on the hook near the door

Pinkheart5915 · 28/08/2016 23:35

I've never left keys in doors.

We lock all doors just before bed then we've a spare set on the bedside table and the other sets are on 1 hook near the front door and 1 hook near the back door

Spiderpigspiderpig · 28/08/2016 23:36

nap my stepdad had one of those put in after his carkeys were stole . Unfortunately I fear I would lock myself out alot if I had one!

Yes ankle I'm trying to weigh up the safety/risk issue of being burgled and being trapped in a fire

OP posts:
Ankleswingers · 28/08/2016 23:36

We have a 'key hook' not far from front door but without sight from the outside. They are close enough to grab should we need to in the event ( heaven forbid) of an emergency.

Spiderpigspiderpig · 28/08/2016 23:36

We need to put a spare set in the bedroom

Mozismyhero · 28/08/2016 23:37

I'm with you. Would rather be burgled than be trapped in a burning house trying to find keys.

OnwardsAndUpwardsYo · 28/08/2016 23:39

I've learnt something, I always leave the keys in the lock but from now on will be removing and hanging them up.

albertcampionscat · 28/08/2016 23:39

What Mozismyhero said. I'd rather be burgled than burnt. Plus, crime has been falling for decades, so risk of burglary pretty low.

BombadierFritz · 28/08/2016 23:40

leave ours in the door. I choose burglary over die in a fire.

OnwardsAndUpwardsYo · 28/08/2016 23:41

I think I'm going to copy the back door key, the front door keys and the patio door key and just have those right by the bed at all times. In case of emergency and needing to get out quickly.

StarryIllusion · 28/08/2016 23:43

I leave them in the doors at night. I'm not a heavy sleeper, if someone broke a window I'd hear it. I would rather have a quick easy exit in case of fire. Not in the locks when out though.

PickAChew · 28/08/2016 23:44

DH is right.

PickAChew · 28/08/2016 23:46

I keep a set of keys on my bedside table. Easy to grab in an emergency without hunting for them.
