To school?

Fgs, crazeee... no

I know u cant monitor them when they are outside but, really no tights? school skirt that short?

(shudder at thought of my dd's getting older!!)

How old a teen is she? Why can't she wear trousers?

My dd is 15 and with her current stubborn/independent attitude that she knows best, I would be hard pressed to get her to wear TIGHTS! She hasn't worn them since she was 3 or 4!

She's the one who will be cold - let her take the consequences, she is old enough imo to make that decision.

ps ds1 (13) often goes out in a t-shirt in this weather and I know he is doing it to cause a row so I don't give him one. He soon puts one on the next time.

QueenEagle · 31/01/2007 10:46

Soon puts a jumper on next time...that was meant to be.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry!

Flamesparrow · 31/01/2007 10:48

As long as knickers are covered let her get on with it.

nulnulcat · 31/01/2007 10:49

i was one of those teenagers that would do that, and in my twenties also went out in clothes totally unsuitable for the weather refused to take a coat out with me even if it was snowing a blizzard and -20! no amount of nagging from anyone would have made any difference and i am now a sensible 30 something that always wears coats tights and more clothes to go out in!

dabihp · 31/01/2007 11:02

But, generally it makes girls look like slags. esp, since they wear knee high socks with it.

I underetand being a teenager and doing it. ( wasnt THAT long ago since i was one!) But as a mother I now disapprove! and would not want my teenage daughter to walk round like that!!

jampot · 31/01/2007 11:05

I take it you mean woolly little girl tights - why on earth would a teenager want to look like a 3 year old? That said there are some very nice funky tights around for teenagers if only the 8 year olds would stop wearing them too. My dd wears either 40 denier opaque tights in black or natural tights for school - either way cant imagine they keep her warm

jampot · 31/01/2007 11:06

i take it your local school isnt hot on uniform then? ie. skirt below a certain length etc? Maybe you should call them and ask what their uniform policy is

WideWebWitch · 31/01/2007 11:31

I would, they'll soon learn it's bloody cold.

oliveoil · 31/01/2007 11:33

My mum refused to buy me and my sister short skirts and got long ones.

So we wore them, smiled sweetly, and rolled them up when we got on the bus.

oliveoil i went one better i wore the short skirt under the long skirt and as soon as i got out of sight of the house the long skirt was whipped off! that was aged 15!

at 16 i decided i was going to do the whole indie thing and the short skirt that literally just covered my bum was worn with thick black tights and doc martens!

i then went back to a slapper at 18 and wore hotpants!

I still wear clothes that are unsuitable for the weather! I dress like its summer all year round..
typical outfit: short skirt, ballet pumps, vest top with cardigan or wee t-shirt.. but ALWAYS tights (cos i have stretchmarks on my thighs is the real reason!!)

And I live in Scotland!

Let her wear what she likes, its a freedom of expression to choose your own style and you dont want to hinder that. If she gets cold, damn sure shell put more clothes on next time!

Tights are actually really fashionable at the moment, maybe you could subtly leave good magazines around with fashion articles about tights?

Try Grazia or Heat for great pics of celeb style. Might work!!

brimfull · 05/02/2007 23:37

teenage daughters generally dress how they like ime.
My dd15 goes well wrapped up but that's her choice,I've long since given up having a say in her wardrobe choices.

Oh tell me about it.. My 14 year old DS won't wear a coat even if it's snowing.. and he takes his blazer off given the chance! He goes to school in trousers and a shirt, in ALL SEASONS!! And the child has cystic fibrosis!! I despair of him!

we younger mums of teenagers remember what was done with the rolling of skirts and the taking off tights at school.

my 13 ( nearly 14) yr old daughter wears trousers.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 06/02/2007 10:27

Yes, DS shoves his into the footwell of the passenger seat and then gets out of the car without it! If the issue is forced at the school gate, he stashes it in a locker where is takes approx. 6.4 weeks to reappear!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 06/02/2007 10:28

(and a couple have never reappeared.. and you can't go chasing up lost property in Secondary School either.. "It's just humiliating Mum!!")

Tortington · 06/02/2007 10:31

pmsl @ the school of thought " if it's cold she'll soon learn"

vanity and peer pressure dears! it wouldnt matter if we were in the antarctic.

i think school girls with short skirts look slutty.

as an aside - my 17 yr old son ( working not at school) has a mohecan. i think he looks like a twat. however i tell him its lovley. if he wants to do it for the parental outrage - then he's sadly dissapointed - i even offered for him to have it glued and coloured. he hasn't taken me up on the offer!

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 06/02/2007 10:32

{grin] Well done Custardo! Reverse psycholhogy works incredibly well with teenagers.. I just need to remember to use it more often.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 06/02/2007 10:32

psychology. Sigh.

I agree with Queeneagle. Both DD's would not be told, despite seeing their legs turn blue. The 'attitude' and wanting to 'look cool' seemed to override any ounce of sense in - it includes no jumper / coats / hats and bare midriffs are the norm.

Consequences = supply hot chocolate IF they agree!!

We said nothing and let them get on with it.
