Chinny reckon...

I have seen that phrase on MN several times since I started lurking around on here, despite never having heard it in real life. But from context and similarity, I guess it means the same as "itchy chin" which we used to say as kids to mean "yeah, right". I'd be willing to bet the accompanying hand gesture was the same too!

It got me thinking cos I'm a loser about other (possibly regional?) differences in sayings or games. One example I always remember cropping up when we were kids is the hide & seek game known either as 40-40 or 50-50 (obviously the 50-50-ers were just wrong..)

I find this kind of thing fascinating and would therefore like to open the MN floor to other examples....anyone?

And to pick who was it we sang while pointing to each person "Dip do dog shit who stood in it you stood in dog shit!" Lovely little kids we were.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 23/08/2016 23:44

Chinny chinny round these parts, with gesture.

Jimmy Hill when I were a nipper! But with the same chin stroking gesture.

"My dad's is dead rich and drives a Ferrari"

  • [Stroke massive imaginary chin] Jimmy Hill he does, I saw him pick you up in a Morris Marina.
glitterwhip · 23/08/2016 23:44

Fastwindow lol yes! Id forgotten about ol' susie!

SueGeneris · 23/08/2016 23:45

Chinny treecreepers!

(North east)

Also - French skippy (elastics) and catchy-kissy.

My dcs do play games in the playground but mainly variants of tag/cops and robbers. I don't hear of the clapping and skipping games though. I used to love those. I still remember discovering French skippy and I thought it was amazing. I absolutely loved it.

LouisTherouxsGlasses · 23/08/2016 23:47

I fear these games are dying out. Someone I know worked in a playgroup and said none of the wee ones even know the nursery rhymes anymore, because of TV apparently. Rather sad.

April241 · 23/08/2016 23:49

"Beardy beardy" or "beardy Bob" here, I had no idea what chinny reckon meant when I seen it here!

French skipping - Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales sang along.

Clapping "CeCe my playmate..."

The wee thing you'd do with the folded up paper "pick a colour" "blue" "b.l.u.e" as you're opening and closing the wee...thing!

Kiss Cuddle or Torture

What's the time Mr Wolf

Big steps, baby steps

Scarecrow tag

Agh...so many memories!!!

At my school we played POLO which if I remember correctly involved us standing at a wall opposite another wall, then running to each wall as quickly as possible, touching the wall and yelling the letter out. The fastest one won I think. Hopscotch was a favourite as was skipping. I loved the skipping rhymes!

FoxesOnSocks · 23/08/2016 23:50

I saw kids playing elastics the other day, I was impressed. Plus the fact the elastic was made out of loom bands (good that they'd discovered a use for the 23567808653223567893995322356789997421356789986533 left over bands from that fad)

talksensetome · 23/08/2016 23:50

We had British bull dog, red rover, what time is it Mr Wolf, man hint, stick in the mud.

We also had queeny-i-o which had a song,
Queenie-i-o Queenie-i-o
Whose got the ball-i-o
I ain't got it
It ain't in my pocket
And it ain't between my legs
Have a look.

Not sure the point of the game actually but one person had the ball and the person who was on had to guess I think.

We all so had knock knock polo
All the children would stand in a line and one person who was on would stand at the opposite end of the playing space. The person who was on would say a category like cars or colours etc then turn their back.
The other players gathered round and all came up with an option each and one person would shout them all out.
The person who was on then had to go to the line, knock on each persons back and Tey to guess what they were so for instance, knock knock, are you pink? Each person would say no but when they knocked and guessed the option you had chosen you had to run up and down the pitch shouting P at one end, O at the other end, back up and shout L, back down and shout O, then back to the top and shout knock knock polo.
The person who was on had to race against you and whoever completed the knock knock polonium first won and the loser would then be on.

Chatterbox!

My kids still make those!

FastWindow · 23/08/2016 23:51

Ah april those are snapdragons and ive taught my ds5 to make them. And his three cousins. They love making up insults for the middle 'you are a poo' brilliant.

liz70 · 23/08/2016 23:51

A clapping song I remember:

Yellow belly custard
Green snot pie
All mixed together
With a dead dog's eye
Slap it on a butty
Nice and thick
Wash it all down
With a cup of cold sick!

Such innocent days... Smile

glitterwhip · 23/08/2016 23:52

We called those fortune tellers ..I still make them for my kids actually

April241 · 23/08/2016 23:52

Oh yeah!!! Kurby, red rovers, British bulldog (which ended up banned in our schools!) and duck duck goose.

JenLindley · 23/08/2016 23:53

We played one and I'm not sure it's actually OK anymore - blind man's buff? I think one person was blindfolded and had to catch everyone else?

FairyDogMother11 · 23/08/2016 23:53

talksomesense that's what I was thinking of! I couldn't quite remember the rules of the game!

April241 · 23/08/2016 23:53

Ah yeah roll and fast that's them!!!

FairyDogMother11 · 23/08/2016 23:54

talksense sorry I didn't check my spelling Blush

glitterwhip · 23/08/2016 23:54

Oh we had that game with the tennis ball too
Allie Bally susie-ally who's got the ball-i-o lol so daft!

HoneyBadgers · 23/08/2016 23:56

Does anyone remember that stupid thing where you'd pull your mouth apart and you'd have to try and say things like 'my dad works on a pirate ship' without it sounding like something else Grin

FastWindow · 23/08/2016 23:56

I made -hundreds-- a few. Then i thought sod this and taught them how. I do still have to make them the square from the A4 first, that's a bit beyond them to get a nice even square!

My dh saw me doing the snapdragons and suddenly remembered how to make a water bomb from A4. It worked. A cube that held water.

glitterwhip · 23/08/2016 23:57

Haha we would make people say 'my dad's a banker' with hilarious results..we thought so anyway Blush

apatheticfallacy · 23/08/2016 23:57

So many memories!!

We had itchy chin where I was in the SW.

We would all hold hands and the person on one end would hold the school fence, we would skip around under the arm holding onto the fence tying ourselves in knots singing:
The big ship sails on the alley alley oh
The alley alley oh
The alley alley oh
The big ship sails on the alley alley oh
On the last day of September
CRASH BANG WALLOP!!

And on the wallop we'd all grow ourselves to the ground.

We also used to get into large groups, stand in a circle and each try to sit on the knee of the person behind - lots of laughter there.

We played bulldog too (didn't call it British bulldog) but it got banned when the same girl broke her clavicle twice in one term!

England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, inside, outside, inside ON here, there were more but I've forgotten them.

stuck in the mud that required diving through legs.
40 40 in.
Sardines.
Cats cradle
Polo
Please mother may I
