I have seen that phrase on MN several times since I started lurking around on here, despite never having heard it in real life. But from context and similarity, I guess it means the same as "itchy chin" which we used to say as kids to mean "yeah, right". I'd be willing to bet the accompanying hand gesture was the same too!

It got me thinking cos I'm a loser about other (possibly regional?) differences in sayings or games. One example I always remember cropping up when we were kids is the hide & seek game known either as 40-40 or 50-50 (obviously the 50-50-ers were just wrong..)

I find this kind of thing fascinating and would therefore like to open the MN floor to other examples....anyone?

Just "elastics" here. I tried to practice at home with a chair leg! England Ireland Scotland Wales inside outside inside on was one rhyme but I know there was another....

We had "block" and "block myself 123 stop" but can't quite remember the rules. You had to make your way back to the postboxes being caught I think.

I loved the big long skipping rope too. We had a lot of skipping games - my daughters infant school doesn't seem to do any :(

I broke my sister's arm playing bumper cars. Blush pointless game where we had to fold our arms out in front of us and bash into each other. No one ever won. Someone always cried. Grin

Dobey scarecrow now at DD school ... Whatever that is!!

Nedisabloodydonkey · 23/08/2016 23:23

Also w e played Red Rover.
Two teams. Each held hands in a long line and faced the other team.

Team sang "red rover red rover we call over" and the person who was named on the opposing team had to run at the line as hard as possible. If they broke it they went back to their own team (and maybe took a team member with them to join their team?) If they didn't break the line they had to join opposing team. Winner got the most team members.

Handclapping games.

Under the bramble bushes, down by the sea... Anyone remember that one?

Nedisabloodydonkey · 23/08/2016 23:25

Oh yeah - Sust! We used that but the whole phrase was "Sust out badly in the name of the law". Meant caught you out telling a lie. Obviously looking at it now it clearly doesn't make sense!

glitterwhip · 23/08/2016 23:26

Fastwindow that was my fave! Used to see how fast you could do it without making mistakes

Queenbean · 23/08/2016 23:26

Imissmy0ldusername · 23/08/2016 23:27

Practising elastics using chair legs - did anyone else suffer with the chairs shuffling progressively closer to each other (and thus ending up with flabby elastics), or was that just me?

MaudlinNamechange · 23/08/2016 23:27

Great thread! I had completely forgotten Stuck In the Mud and Red Rover till I read this! And Bumper Cars! I went to school with someone who broke her arm doing that, too. I never broke a bone - I just wasn't committed enough.

I remember skipping with a long rope where two girls were needed to "take end" and the others would skip in and out.

"Someone's under the bed
Whoever can it be?
Ned is getting nervous
Says "Maudlin come in to me!"
First she lights the candle
then she says to me
Gerrout Gerrout you dirty sprout and leave the rest to me!"

At the third line, Ned and I would be jumping together because I jump in, and then at Gerrout, Ned would jump out and the next person would jump in, etc.

I have only just realised that this is a song about someone who calls for help because there is a man under the bed and the helper wants to keep him for ...herself!

JenLindley · 23/08/2016 23:28

Yes red rover! And dodgeball! I hated dodgeball. I was one of the few with a bullseye on my faceglasses.

glitterwhip · 23/08/2016 23:30

We had a weird way of choosing who was 'it' ..everyone had to put their feet together in a circle and we'd tap each foot and say 'ip dip dog shit you are on it' god it's so awful but it was completely normal lol

FastWindow · 23/08/2016 23:30

Anyone play Sardines?

LouisTherouxsGlasses · 23/08/2016 23:31

In NI we never said 'it' or 'tag', but 'catchies'. We also said 40-40.
Does anybody remember this clapping game:

A sailor went to sea sea sea
To see what he could see see see
But all that he could see see see
Was the bottom of the deep blue sea sea sea

A work of poetic genius, that Grin

JenLindley · 23/08/2016 23:31

We used to have a skipping song that went something along the lines of "how many kisses did she get, 1, 2,3 etc" does anyone know the right way of it?

glitterwhip · 23/08/2016 23:32

I'm from NI and we said 'it' lol what part are you from?

JenLindley · 23/08/2016 23:32
