To think there's nothing wrong with own brand stuff?

Was in the supermarket earlier and a woman asked her friend to get her some butter - but "a brand, none of that cheap shite". Hmm

What is wrong with own brand? :( Sometimes/Mostly that's all I can afford! Isn't it all the same food anyway?

Oh and WU liquid and coffee, they're big brands.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/08/2016 09:39

More often than not you're paying extra just for the advertising.

I will try any supermarket brand stuff once. Sometimes it's just as good, sometimes not.

One thing I always buy now is Asda Smartprice pasta shapes - 29p for 500g the other day! Nowt wrong with it.

I buy loads of Boots brand things - so much cheaper than their equivalents, and double points, too. Wish I could convince dh, who is a bit of a brand junkie when it comes to shaving cream etc.

AverageGayLad · 24/08/2016 11:26

See I don't drink tea or coffee, and for me own brand hot chocolate isn't bad Grin

The absolute only thing I wouldn't buy own brand version of is cola - it's usually rank. But Tesco do a lovely cloudy lemonade for about 50p (2 litre bottle)

Amelie10 · 24/08/2016 12:43

I'm a brand snob. I like the good stuff. DH is the same. I wouldn't be so vocal about it but then DH and I do the shopping so we would know what to get.

StillDrSethHazlittMD · 24/08/2016 12:44

Agree with others who have said the things they refuse to buy own branded: cereal other than Kellogg's or Nestle
beans/beanz other than Heinz
tomato ketchup other than Heinz
cola other than Coke or Pepsi

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 24/08/2016 12:49

DrSeth. Not Pepsi - bleurgh. I like the hard stuff...

StillDrSethHazlittMD · 24/08/2016 12:51

I know about you liking the "hard" stuff Jess....

SirKillalot · 24/08/2016 12:52

I'm am fussy about tea. I like Yorkshire.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 24/08/2016 12:53

I thought the cola thing was cute, though. I felt all warm and fuzzy.

TwentyCups · 24/08/2016 12:55

Everything I buy is own brand expect coke. I love saving money :)

AverageGayLad · 24/08/2016 12:59

Jess you mean to say you're a tart here too? Grin Away from the hard stuff!

Ha ha you should go on 'how to eat well for less' the self confessed brand snobs can never tell the difference!

RaisingSteam · 24/08/2016 13:02

It's not one rule for everything. You pays your money you takes your choice.

Really MN needs an "Old Chestnuts" board for this stuff.

If you want to save money you either compromise on branding, quality or service. If you don't want to save money then sod off to Waitrose and stock up on your brands whilst flunkeys pack your trolley and bring you free coffee. (I imagine).

Our nearest supermarket is Aldi so we've got used to more or less everything they do just to save a 15 mile round trip to a bigger place.

The only thing I'm precious about is teabags. Don't mess with my Yorkshire tea.

AverageGayLad · 24/08/2016 13:03

Twenty I literally get SO excited sad I know for the discount shelf Grin

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 24/08/2016 13:04

AGL. Tart? Oh, you mean the Tesco Value jam kind. Yes, they're quite nice. And the Jaffa cakes.

MrsMook · 24/08/2016 13:15

I buy a mix. Simple products like pasta and porridge oats will often be the value brand. Some will be the own brand, some things I'll buy the premium product. Things like sausages and ham I'll check the ingredients for minimum bulking.

Some brands I like more than others.

In my student days, the 20p bottles of washing up liquid disappeared in hours and were much poorer value than a thicker brand. Then there was the time when my housemate refused to believe that his value bacon had evaporated. It had a LOT of water pumped into it! Grin

AverageGayLad · 24/08/2016 13:22

It EVAPORATED?

PortiaCastis · 24/08/2016 13:30

I only buy orgasm veg

LunaLoveg00d · 24/08/2016 13:49

I'm a brand snob. I like the good stuff.

No, what you mean is you like the expensive stuff. As has been said time and time again on the thread, expensive does not always equate to better. Often, the cheaper own brands are just as good.

MyBreadIsEggy · 24/08/2016 13:59

I think your tastebuds become accustom to certain things - so if you've bought the same brand of beans for ages and then buy a different brand for whatever reason, you do notice the subtle differences between them....but that's because it's different to what you've become used to, not because the cheaper product is shit Hmm
I buy Yorkshire Tea teabags because they sell them in Aldi, but my mum buys more expensive PG Tips and I can tell the difference when I have a cup of tea at her house but it still tastes like tea! Not some kind of superior tea because she paid a quid more for it Hmm

Grumpyoldblonde · 24/08/2016 14:42

Is PG Tips more expensive than Yorkshire Tea? I can only drink Yorkshire or Clipper, others are too weak, I like a proper brew

MyBreadIsEggy · 24/08/2016 14:47

Grumpyoldblonde they are more expensive when mum buys Pg tips from Tesco and I get my Yorkshire Tea for a bargain price in aldi Wink

MeMySonandl · 24/08/2016 14:49

Where do they sell those orgasm vegetables???Grin

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 24/08/2016 14:52

Me. I think they're called courgettes. They work for me, anyway...
