To think there's nothing wrong with own brand stuff?

Was in the supermarket earlier and a woman asked her friend to get her some butter - but "a brand, none of that cheap shite". Hmm

What is wrong with own brand? :( Sometimes/Mostly that's all I can afford! Isn't it all the same food anyway?

If you're skint and hungry any food will suffice

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 23/08/2016 17:49

The only thing I'm a bit fussy about is veg.

notamummy10 · 23/08/2016 17:50

I buy mostly own brand products, it doesn't taste any different to branded products. They are two exceptions to this: Kellogg's Corn Flakes and coffee, but that might be my preferences though.

OlennasWimple · 23/08/2016 17:51

Sometimes there are subtle differences in products like medicines, though - the branded one will have a coating that makes the pill easier to swallow, or packaging that's easier to open. The active ingredient might be the same, so be as effective at curing the problem, but it's not necessarily exactly the same product

AverageGayLad · 23/08/2016 17:51

I can't be doing with most of the value/savers stuff. The bread is rank, the beans taste watery, the weetabix is weird. One step up I like. The store brand but not the absolute bottom.

So cheap is fine just not cheap cheap stuff? [Confused]

OP posts:
PortiaCastis · 23/08/2016 17:52

Yes Luna that is my point

rosesarered9 · 23/08/2016 17:53

Sometimes own brand is better than the expensive stuff.
Eg.
Tesco Everyday Value 12 pack ready salted crisps - 66p - Has less salt and fat than Walkers
There is no difference (to me) between own brand dairy products (except flavoured yoghurts) and brand name.
Sauces are just as good as the brand name.
Bread tastes the same as Kingsmill but has a shorter shelf life.
And obviously all are cheaper.
tip for shopping in supermarkets
If you ever need yeast for bread or pizza making, go to the bakery section and ask them with a big Grin for some. They will usually give it away for free.

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 23/08/2016 17:54

I'm cheap. Does that mean no-one will ove me? Sad

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 23/08/2016 17:55

'Love', even

AverageGayLad · 23/08/2016 17:55

roses Really? Will try that tomorrow!

OP posts:
Purplebluebird · 23/08/2016 17:55

I look on the ingredients list and try to get whichever option is healthier/affordable :) Most of the time we buy supermarket's own brand stuff! Should go watch "Eat well for less" on bbc iplayer!

rosesarered9 · 23/08/2016 17:55

Forgot to mention:
Medication is ALWAYS the same, so you can use ibuprofen instead of Nurofen etc and it will do the same thing.
Cereal and coffee should be avoided at all costs!
Tinned tomatoes are also good but they do have a lot of skin, so you might have to take some time to peel them off, but I guess it doesn't really matter in something like soup.

phillipp · 23/08/2016 17:58

phillipp It's still perfectly good to eat though, right?

depends on your definition of 'perfectly good' is. If you mean 'is it edible?' Yes it is.

But taste wise and looking at it from a nutritional point of view, it's not as good.

Which goes back to my original point. Different people have different priorities. Personally I find we like a lot of own brand stuff. But not all. Depends on what it is.

I don't like cheap chocolate so don't buy it. With chocolate, taste is my priority.

acatcalledjohn · 23/08/2016 18:00

You'll find a lot of own brand contains less sugar/salt added crap. We buy most of our basics in Lidl. Why pay over the odds for a cooking oil, passata, sugar, basic veg, cheese, tinned goods, pasta? We've found that some cheaper items don't taste as good, but we aren't brand oriented at all.
Apart from DP and his Clover

We've been watching Eat Well for Less and have been staggered at the gullibility of some people. A weekly spend of £200 for basic food items, because everything is branded ("It's better" is it bollocks) or expensive convenience items (such as pre-chopped veg or lazy garlic Hmm). How did we become so dependent on marketing?

Sparklesilverglitter · 23/08/2016 18:03

I think it very much depends on what your buying.

I've never liked anything I've tried from any value range but some of the stuff a step up from the value is ok. Things like paracetamol is no different if you pay 30p or a brand. Porridge oats no different from own brand to brand. Toilet roll again no difference between sainsburys own and andrex

There is a few things I'd never buy cheap meat, bread, digestive buscuits, beans, tea bags, coffee, cola, shampoo, cheese

My Mum buys everything own brand apart for her tea bags ( she has to have Yorkshire tea)

We've all got different taste buds and all like different things.

AverageGayLad · 23/08/2016 18:05

I wish I had bloody £200 to spend on brands

I do buy mainly brands, I can't help myself. The only things we buy own brand are toilet rolls and sauces for DC as they use soooo much of it.

There is nothing wrong with buying own brand though, we all buy what we can afford/ what we like

AverageGayLad · 23/08/2016 18:14

This is true, Eatthecake :)

Pinkheart5915 · 23/08/2016 18:15

I have to admit I buy brands,it's very rare I will pick up something own brand.

There is nothing wrong with buying own brand, we all have different tastes and budgets

AverageGayLad · 23/08/2016 18:19

It just irritates me, I mean I'd never make comments about someone buying extravagant foods so when it's the other way around it gets to me.

OP posts:
phillipp · 23/08/2016 18:22

But she didn't make comments to you about what was in your trolley. She made a comment to someone who was with her.

She thinks it's cheap shite, she is entitled to think that.

Marmalade85 · 23/08/2016 18:26

Sometimes it is a false economy and you buy cheap you buy twice.

ijustwannadance · 23/08/2016 18:26

Tesco own antihistamines £2.78 for 30.
Branded same price for 7. Ridiculous.

I will buy supermarket own or branded if on offer. Makes no difference.

My Dad once tried to put cheap cornflakes in a kelloggs box box though. I was like Hmm. They were bright yellow and vile.

SecretNutellaFix · 23/08/2016 18:27

I only buy own brand proper butter- there's only going to be so much you can do to differentiate between own brand and premium brand, and it usualy involves adding more expensive salt to it.

Same for paracetamol, ibuprofen- generic saves a tonne of money.

Value crisps however are not a popular option- they tend to be packaged more poorly than premium brands and we've had more stale tasting value crisp snacks than I'd care to count which ultimately leads to a waste of money if no one eats them.
We'll eat almost any brand of Ketchup except Value range as it can be watery.
