I am not being unreasonable. I can't be. It said it would be ready in 20-22 minutes on the sodding packet, 45 minuted later I gave up and ate my still crunchy brown frigging rice with my (now quite overcooked) stir fry.
I bought the bloody stuff to be healthy but it took so long to cook that I ended up eating cake while I waited cos I was so hungry. Cake!
Fuck brown rice.

That's weird, I've never had a problem, 25 mins max. Plenty of water and lid on.

I have always wondered why both Waitrose ordinary brown rice and their easy cook brown rice both say they take 25 mins though.

Rice cooker!!!!! I have had one for 10 years and use it 2-3 times a week. Perfect rice every time. Mind you i dont cook brown rice....but its a rice cooker so designed for that purchase. Yabu not to tell which sort of cake and pass it around! 🎂🎂🎂🎂🍰🍰🍰

Trifleorbust · 23/08/2016 07:08

Hate brown rice. Crunchy, dirty stuff.

whattodowiththepoo · 23/08/2016 07:09

I'm batch cooking brown rice in a pressure cooker right now!
Very quick.

Groovee · 23/08/2016 07:18

Tilda brown rice is fine! But cooking my own never tastes right.

LifeInJeneral · 23/08/2016 08:30

Sorry london you are quite right, I don't know where my manners are, please help yourself to some chocolate sponge cream cake! (I bought it because bake off starts again on Wednesday and it's cake week so obviously will need cake to watch it)

A Joseph Joseph rice cooker changed my life. Won't buy 'instant rice' any longer, and didn't like the oily texture of it anyway.

scarednoob · 23/08/2016 08:41

microwave wholegrain rice. takes 2 mins. life's too short otherwise :)

DizzyNorthernBird · 23/08/2016 09:12

I love brown rice! So much tastier than white. I use tesco's own and it cooks in 20-25 mins. Here's how I cook it with perfect results every time:

  1. for two people fill a mug with rice (or half a mug for one etc)
  2. heat a couple of teaspoons of oil in a pan until hot and then throw in the rice, making sure all the grains are coated. Then poor in two mugs (or double the quantity of water:rice) of boiling water into the pan. It'll start furiously bubbling straight away so be careful not to scald your hand on the steam.
  3. season with salt, stir, put a lid on it, turn down heat to a simmer and leave for 20 minutes before checking.
  4. remove lid, give it a stir and most of the water should have absorbed leaving you with perfect fluffy, and tasty, brown rice Smile
Mlungu · 23/08/2016 09:32

Add a cube or half of vegetable stock.
Cool on high for 20 minutes then turn down heat stir through and simmer for the remaining time.
Just keep checking on it.
The timing is crucial and it all depends on the make.
Tilda is the worst while Tesco brand and Sainsbury own are very good and easy to cook .
Brown rice is quite tricky but cooked well is delicious.

Buy easy cook white! Basmati for preference.

twinkletash · 23/08/2016 09:37

Get a rice cooker, it's a life changer! Any rice literally takes 15 minutes and it's perfectly cooked, even brown rice! Grin

DataColour · 23/08/2016 09:43

We mostly eat brown rice. I put rice in pan with tight fitting lid, put double volume of just boiled water, put lid on and cook for 25 mins (basmati) or 35mins (other kinds). Comes out perfect.
The only time I don't like brown rice is with curries, I feel it's too "heavy" then as a side.

ShoeEatingMonster · 23/08/2016 09:47

You need a rice cooker! Best thing ever.

DarylDixonsDarlin · 23/08/2016 09:49

Uncle Bens wholegrain rice is delicious and takes nowhere near 45 mins. The boil in the bag version is the best, but the ordinary one loose in a box is fine too.

Not gonna lie, I prefer white. But nicely done wholegrain rice is so lovely! Doesn't brown contain more arsenic, anyway?

OwlinaTree · 23/08/2016 09:55

We have brown rice with everything except Thai, I prefer white rice with Thai.

LavenderEverywhere · 23/08/2016 09:57

I don't much like all brown rice on its own. I find it claggy and I'm not wild about the flavour. I LOVE wild rice though, and those mixed bags of white, brown and wild altogether. But I am always a bit Confused about how you are supposed to cook it when they all take different lengths of time.

YorkieDorkie · 23/08/2016 09:59

IMO white rice is not bad enough for you to warrant the punishment of brown rice Grin.

On a side note, I bloody love the whole grain rice, quinoa and bulgar wheat microwave packets from ALDI!

NannyR · 23/08/2016 10:04

I buy tilda brown basmati and boil it for 25 min, comes out perfect every time.

LifeInJeneral · 23/08/2016 10:04

Rice cooker might be worth a look. I'm actually a bit of a white rice fiend (basmati) so obviously I am a semi expert on cooking it (while I was a student I would happily consider white rice and garden peas with Greek yoghurt splodged in top a full 'meal'). The packet on the brown rice (asda basmati) said to turn it down to a simmer for the 20 mins but it sounds like it needs a hard boil from what people have said. I will give it another go later and see if I do better now that I have had some MN tips

I actually find white rice is a punishment! Grin

5Foot5 · 23/08/2016 13:02

I like that the brown rice is a bit chewier. It makes it more interesting.

Fashionablychallenged · 23/08/2016 13:08

The brown rice you get in uk supermarkets are a lie. They are farmed using western methods which means on average they have less nutrients then normally farmed brown rice in Asia. If any of you ever visit Sri Lanka it's worth picking up a kilo of natural brown rice!

Fashionablychallenged · 23/08/2016 13:09

White rice is more responsible the bigger belly. Brown rice has more nutrients it's a fact.
