To be sad the Olympics have finished

i think it's just what we needed after Brexit. We have done so well and feel really proud to be British tonight. I will also miss all the sports I don't normally watch but really enjoy. My best bits.... Watching the track cycling and Mo Farah winning his races. Also watching Nick Skelton win a gold in the equestrian event after breaking his back and having a hip replacement. We did good!!

YANBU. I've thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics, found myself engrossed in sports I know nothing about and wouldn't usually watch, hearing the back stories of people who have overcome real adversity to get there - broken necks, comas, war zones, lack of support or equipment to name just a few. People who have made personal sacrifices and who, in many cases, are the sort of role models we should be encouraging children to look up to, espousing values like teamwork, commitment, determination, respect.

I've been delighted Team GB has done so well, but some of the best moments have been found in enjoying the achievements of participants from other countries too - and not necessarily just the winners.

Of course the organisation and the politics wasn't perfect, no one is claiming otherwise, but Rio still managed to put on an enjoyable Games, and I'm sad it's over. But that's the trick I guess - leave your audience wanting more!

manicinsomniac · 22/08/2016 17:23

Mumontherun - yep, that's me, I'm afraid. I'll catch bits where I can but sport watching needs to be a summer holiday thing for me. The Paralympics start far too late for me to have time to watch them and I don't know enough about them to be really interested.

I'm sure they were earlier in 2012? I couldn't get athletics tickets to the Olympics so went to the Paralympics so we could see the stadium and really enjoyed them. Wouldn't be able to do that this time, even if they were in London.

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 22/08/2016 18:11

They did start at the end of July in London so a little earlier. I will also watch the Paralympics as they are amazing also. It is terrible about the funding though I quite agree.

I thought they were scaling down the Paralympics because they have run out of money which is so sad, I'm also thinking of the poorer citizens of Rio who will now have to manage with a lack of resources ie. Cuts to healthcare now its all over.

Chihuahualala · 23/08/2016 00:37

Organisation was shit but the sport is great. Don't think they're heroes though and no gongs should be handed out to someone who has sourced public money for years in pursuits of their own selfish goals.

That's not the point though, I enjoyed everything and miss it. Considering going to Tokyo as have always wanted to and think they will put on an amazing show.

Inkanta · 23/08/2016 02:37

Yeah I really enjoyed it too OP. It was just what we needed.

Very proud of Team GB.

katemess12 · 23/08/2016 03:07

Why not watch the Paralympics? They're still to come. Confused

I watched the first week-ish of the Olympics, because I got bored of it after that. But I will be watching as much of the Paralympics as possible (or as much as is shown here), especially because they're anticipating low audience rates at the actual events. Sucks so bad for those people who've worked their hearts out to get there.

But I really hang out for the Winter Olympics. So much better than Summer.

hidingwithwine · 23/08/2016 06:24

We love the Olympics despite pretty much detesting sport for the 4 years between games Grin. Now we're left with the "what do we watch now?" feeling that we have after every Olympics. Oh well, come on 2020!

ForalltheSaints · 23/08/2016 07:11

Look forward to the Paralympics. Though it won't have some of the London 2012 highlights especially the mass booing of Gideon Osbourne.

Togaparties · 23/08/2016 07:48

I'm well chuffed it's finished! Sick of hearing about it. Utter shite.

Iwantacampervan · 23/08/2016 09:23

I am looking forward to the Paralympics as we went to the athletics in London and it was a great day. I like the C4 coverage and The Last Leg.
My eldest daughter (K-Pop fanatic) is excited that the next Olympic games are to be in Tokyo but was doubly excited when she discovered that the Winter Olympics are to be in Korea - I'm not sure that we can afford one or even two trips (unless I win the lottery !)

NoCapes · 23/08/2016 09:28

I managed to not see one single second of the olympics this time
Star for me!

JassyRadlett · 23/08/2016 09:28

Love love love the Olympics, the showcase for sports that don't usually get a look in, the inspiring and motivating of kids to try new sports and try harder at the ones they do. Really hoping Paris gets 2024, if so I'll take the kids to some events (have been to Sydney and London games).

I don't get the tallies by county, it looks to me like (amazing) individual achievement.

Funded, organised, trained and supported by the UK.

Andrewofgg · 23/08/2016 09:48

Bored senseless with it. Next time can we please have a half-hour summary on a channel nobody gets in the small hours and otherwise pretend it's not happening?

Ratley · 23/08/2016 10:43

I'm sad its over too, I love the Olympics it always inspires me to get out and run.
I don't watch the Paralympics though, as I said on another thread the different categories make it feel repetitive and a bit boring for me.

purplevase4 · 23/08/2016 11:07

I really enjoyed it and am sorry it's over.

I was a bit surprised they brought most of the athletes home on the same plane. Wouldn't it be better to spread them round a few planes in case one crashes. Morbid I know.

Mummylin · 23/08/2016 11:15

I too have enjoyed it immensely despite being a non sports person and would be hopeless at everything. Everything on the tele now seems so boring, roll on the Paralympics !

specialsubject · 23/08/2016 11:33

I have to say i watched far more than i thought , because the events of interest were on at a realistic time. Terrible coverage though. Sadly now back to reality. Fortunately no terror attack on the games although many racist incidents.

Btw If anyone is wondeting why the vest and pants stuff was on so late, thats nbc getting it shifted for the american audience. Fortunately they cant shift daylight so we got to see the outdoor stuff. This may also have hit the ticket sales, who knows?

JudyCoolibar · 23/08/2016 11:40

I'm neutral about the Olympics - I may watch if there's something in which GB has an interest or the big races like Usain Bolt's, but I don't go out of my way to do so. I don't watch boxing anyway, nor things like sailing where I don't really understand what the hell's going on. But I did get pissed off with the way it pushed so much of what is normally on the BBC out of the schedules and am delighted it's now over.

BigTroubleInLittleChina · 23/08/2016 12:03

I'm not in the least bit sporty but have LOVED the Olympics. I also thought (on the whole) the commentary was good - really interesting to find out the rules of the games and the back history of the athletes etc

I also loved the pomp and ceremony.

honeyrider · 23/08/2016 12:20

I love the Olympics but the Rio Olympics was the worst offering that I can remember and I'm no spring chicken, it wasn't a patch on the London Olympics.

I thought the Brazilian fans constant booing was disgraceful, the fixed results in the boxing, the corruption etc just detracted from the sports side of it. The opening and closing ceremonies were boring beyond belief. I just hope Tokyo put on a better show though it wouldn't be hard.

I really enjoyed the London Paralympics and was looking forward to the upcoming ones before I heard how it's been slashed.

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 23/08/2016 12:24

I body swerved it due to the drugs issue and the decision not to ban all the Russians. In addition, the poverty in Rio is legendary and yet this money-waste fest was held there.

101handbags · 23/08/2016 13:46

16 days every 4 years...I can't believe non-sport lovers complain. If you simply can't do without anything on TV for this time, there's always things you've recorded, IPlayer, DVDs, Netflix, go to the cinema, plan your holiday to avoid it...It's soon over for another 4 years. But you never know, it could encourage your children to take a up a sport they've never considered or even heard of.

JudyCoolibar · 23/08/2016 15:47

I think the point is that it's those 16 days on top of everything else - this year we've had everything displaced by the European Cup, and Wimbledon, and numerous other events. Really we need one BBC channel dedicated to sport so that the rest of us can happily ignore it.

forceslover · 23/08/2016 15:54

I am missing it, the usual crap of soaps and reruns are backs sport. The Olympics were amazing and now it is back to repeats and the durge of Eastenders. No more Dan Walker and the Cocacabana beach :( Thank fuck for Bake off tonight!
