To be quite shocked that after a member of the public had posted that they had found a hearing aid and hoped to re-unite it with it's owner.. Our local school's SEN teacher commented 'Pardon?'

I hear what you are saying chipped but I feel a bit like the bullies have won. There is also an opportunity to spell it out to a few ignorants in the hearing community just how upsetting comments like that can be to deaf people.

Buzzard, ignore this pike pile of shite. X

user1468407812 · 21/08/2016 21:05

Wow!! Some of these posts have gone way off topic just to sledge hammer home the wrong doing of the SEN, who may or may not have meant anything by the comment. Difficult to understand how somebody's career is called into question over a poorly misjudged joke. I'm not defending said SEN but I am in shock at the response to the OPs apparent offence to it. Its not for anyone else to decide how offended another gets, we are all different, I get that, but having said that, the severity of the offendedness(?) is now of such that somebody's livelihood and reputation is being picked over and intentions scrutinised. Not one of you ever offended another with an off the cuff remark? No? Then get polishing those halos!

BigFatBollocks · 21/08/2016 21:06

Shock me, I'm with u on this. X

BigFatBollocks · 21/08/2016 21:07

User, poorly judged? It's more than that.

BigFatBollocks · 21/08/2016 21:09

U lot need a grip, god help u.

Chippednailvarnishing · 21/08/2016 21:11

Problem is shock I don't think they care. I actually have more concerns about someone who could potentially work with deaf children who has such little understanding or sensitivity.

Buzzard please stop painting yourself as a victim. You're deaf. I'm deaf. Quite a few people on this thread are deaf. As I have already said, if you want to treat your deafness as something to be ashamed of and "quietly" isolate yourself into a state of lonelIness, you are well on your way.
I however won't be doing that, nor will the deaf children I know or their families. If you are looking for support I can give you loads of contacts for groups that might give you more confidence. But first of all you need to stop seeing deafness as the issue, your attitude is the issue.

ShockMe · 21/08/2016 21:11

User you do understand her role in our community and that she posted her 'joke' on a community page don't you? I would hope she had enough education and experience in her role that she could foresee she may cause offence to members of the community, that should have controlled her personal sense of humour surely?

Just reread the whole thread Buzzard am I missing something? I'm pretty sure I haven't 'piled in on you'

Whilst I think the comment is inappropriate, I would not engage with fuckwits on FB.

Chippednailvarnishing · 21/08/2016 21:24

I would not engage with fuckwits on FB Grin

If only life were that simple!

BigFatBollocks · 21/08/2016 21:28

Indeed.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 21/08/2016 21:28

It is bollocks though. You don't get to identify as being deaf when you can hear.

To be fair, they are not identifying as being deaf. They are identifying as Deaf. The two are not interchangeable, although I would argue that audological deafness (deaf) is part of the Deaf life experience.

BigFatBollocks · 21/08/2016 21:34

Let's ask some defos then.

BigFatBollocks · 21/08/2016 21:37

I'm gonna get kicked off, even tho I'm hard of hearing!! Sod it, why not?

Chippednailvarnishing · 21/08/2016 21:41

Big maybe you should head over to the FB page and set them straight Wink

SauvignonBlanche · 21/08/2016 21:41

I was so provoked by a crazy FB friend of my sister's recently, spouting a load of crap that I nearly broke my engaging with fuckwits rule but it's really not worth it.

BigFatBollocks · 21/08/2016 21:43

Chip, yeh I was thinking about that! Grin

sashh · 21/08/2016 21:44

NeedACleverNN

But if everyone could sign you would be receiving instructions in BSL, and it is actually easier to order drink in a noisy club if you sign. Telephones have video options.

And if you can't hear a fire alarm your employer needs to sort out a personal pager of a visual alarm.

People actually identify as being deaf?!

Yes, because it is not seen as a negative thing.

Ok you was raised with BSL as a first language but you CAN hear and you CAN speak so therefore you don't need to sign apart from with people who need it.

You are aware BSL is a language? There is a culture associated with it. There are some things, jokes for instance, that work in BSL but not in English.

An argument could be made that there is no need for anyone in Wales to speak Welsh, or Gaelic on Scottish islands, but people are proud of their languages and want to use them.

NeedAnotherGlass · 21/08/2016 21:48

They can identify with the deaf community and with deaf people, but they cannot identify AS deaf or Deaf if they are not actually deaf.

BigFatBollocks · 21/08/2016 21:52

The point is that being hard of hearing or deaf in society in society is ok to take the piss out of.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 21/08/2016 21:53

They can identify with the deaf community and with deaf people, but they cannot identify AS deaf or Deaf if they are not actually deaf.

But they do. It is something that happens.

Not everyone accepts this as legitimate (I don't) but some do.

I guess it depends on how you define the word "Deaf".

If you define Deafness in terms of "part of a cultural and linguistic minority, first or preferred language is BSL, prefers to communicate through audio/visual means, grew up in/ prefers to associate with Deaf community etc" then it's easy to see how a hearing person might self identify as Deaf.

If you believe that audiological deafness (inability to hear) is an inherent part of Deafness as well as the features listed above, then no, a hearing person cannot be Deaf.

BigFatBollocks · 21/08/2016 21:54

Excuse typos on phone.

BigFatBollocks · 21/08/2016 21:56
