To want to reiterate that 'yes' it's August and 'yes' Scottish schools are back

Honestly on every post on here which mentions a child being in school at the moment, someone, at least one poster states 'are you abroad or something' or 'why are your kids in school it's only august?'
Please please understand that most Scottish schools commence back after summer from around the 15th August, we are not abroad, we are in the Uk (at the moment anywayHmm) and I am fully aware of the English/Welsh holidays as its blasted a cross the BBC enough, just irritates me with some of the comments
(Will get off my Scottish high horse now)
Thanks xxx

YY to the first bit of August. The end of August is still technically summer, but it's stretching it a bit. The best of the summer has been.

Seems really odd to me as August is holiday month but is that just because I'm indoctrinated in the English school system

It's not odd, it's just how it is! To me July is the holiday month. I grew up here, it's just how it is and has always been. We still get the same amount of holidays as England, just at a slightly better different time.

Yes my sister has children in Surrey schools and although they are off at different times it all evens out in the end.

Here we get 2 days in September, week in October (plus 1 extra inset day), 2 weeks at Christmas/New Year, 3 days in February, 2 weeks at Easter, 3 days at the end of May and 7 weeks in the summer.

I want the scottish holidays in the UK. August is foraging/harvest/preserving time here and its just so much easier, faster and less stressful if I can pack DC off to school and crack on with it.

OP:
Ain't that the truth. It's that blinkered mentality as demonstrated by the BBC

Scottish school holidays are not "odd" or at an "odd time". They are what they are. And some of you may well be "indoctrinated". I presume the polar bear person voted Brexit given that she betrays distinct signs of the little englander mentality!

Not up here in the north, Pictish. After an especially rubbish summer, not only has the past week been continuous sunshine but a veritable heatwave. I'm feeling sorry for teachers and kids despite working myself.

Cecily - this year chucked a curve ball at us....we're just back from a week up north which we enjoyed in blazing sunshine. Fantastic wee holiday.
The locals were telling us the summer has been crap up until that point with the previous two weeks a deluge.
The day the kids went back to school there was a scorcher.

I'm counting down the hours until my teenage DS goes back to school on Tuesday! He's lucky he's survived the holidays with the amount of back chat he's done this year.

I have seen the Confused many times here and on other forums and of course the
"why are your kids off school, you shouldnt take them out of school for a holiday, there are still 2 weeks of term left" then later

"why are you talking about your kids being back at school, they DONT go back for another week" etc

seriously people get a grip. We actually KNOW when the school terms are for our kids, we can tell when our kids arent phyicaly here and are at school, we didnt just drop them at the gate and hope for the best, we dont need a lecture from someone who hasnt a clue!

Not all the schools in Scotland have the same term times anyway. we havent got days off in september, have 'tattie week' in October and we have started to have a day off in Nov for St Andrews day but its not on the callander yet so not sure this year.

Glad its not just me who gets secretly annoyed at all this. If it doesnt replicate what happens in London then its 'odd', 'strange', and anyone and everyone is fully entitled to question our parenting over it... NO its normal for US its always been that way. And its great having 2 weeks when only our kids are off and places are much quieter Smile

Living next to the Border we often see kids on holiday when ours have gone back (went back on tuesday here, just in time for glorious 2 days of sunshine lol) its not rocket science, they are still on holiday!

OhFuds agreed. Ds1 has lurched unpredictably between reasonable, hyperactive and foul. He has been incredibly rude on occasion. Love the bones of him but have had a gutful now.

Yep my teen too.

I love the holidays but he has made it harder than it should have been a few times!

Still its preferable to the bloody slog of 'getting him up in time for school' mornings.. every damm morning.

Anyone actually old enough to remember working at 'the berries' all summer and at 'the tatties' october week? Was great fun and we had our own money to spend on what we liked. I think kids miss out these days. Taught us to appreciate our money and gave us some independance.

Think many people would be aghast at their special snowflakes all piling into a van to go to work Smile

In Florida, most schools start back in mid-August (having let out for the summer around 20-24 of May.) Ours started on August 10 this month. Teachers go back a week earlier and work a week after school lets out in May.

The long summer holidays are a holdover from the days when much of the US was an agrarian society and children were needed to help on farms during the growing season. There is really no reason for it now, and many school systems have considered changing it, but with varying degrees of acceptance.

Childcare can be a nightmare. Our children went to day camps and also boarding camps (2 weeks max). They also went traveling with grandparents, which helped a lot. Now that we are grandparents, we are doing the same thing.
