To resent MNHQ coercing MNers in to logging in

That's it, really, the little swingy box that just won't go away, until you log in or join. It's turning MN form a genuinely open forum for browsers into one where they track you.

It's got a lot of MNers very angry indeed on the Site Stuff and I want to raise it here for more traffic.

I too find it really annoying. Never post but do enjoy reading many of the threads. Very irritating on the phone especially

MrsSnow · 18/08/2016 22:38

Agree v annoying.

yolofish · 18/08/2016 22:43

so glad it's not just me. I very often just want a bit of a read, and will post if I have something to say, but that doesnt mean that I necessarily want to log in before I decide to or not.

WorraLiberty · 18/08/2016 23:37

HQ have now said they've changed it.

To get rid of the forced log in pop-up, just log in and straight out again.

Then you can lurk without it.

Cheekyandfreaky · 18/08/2016 23:45

Well I just had to join and felt intense pressure to choose a username- choosers remorse has set in.

JoyceDivision · 18/08/2016 23:46

I put a comment on the other thread. It's ridiculous. Lots of users just want to browse /kill time esp commuting / travelling / waiting between apps or classes for dcs... so we're nowforced to log on in unsecure open zones and in publuc whrre security could be compromised?

If this goes ahead I'll be leaving as it's purely for advertising or personalusing ads according to what you review.

I don't want ways round it by logging in and out... i don't want to have to log in full stop.

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 18/08/2016 23:50

Yanbu, it means I've had to stop mumsnetting at work because I don't want to log in on that device. What a shit Idea!

readsalotgirl63 · 18/08/2016 23:51

I agree it's annoying. I only login when at home but like to browse during lunch hour at work and don't want to login then - and can't remember password at work either

WorraLiberty · 18/08/2016 23:55

If you're worried about open zones just change your password regularly.

Why don't people want to log in and straight out again at work?

sorry if I sound dim but I dont work in an office.

user123456 · 18/08/2016 23:57

OK everyone her is how to get around this without signing in get a addblocker, I recommend U-Block Origin and when the pop-up come up right click and block the Element and you never have to see it again.

This also will stop mumsnet and other sites tracking your web viewing habits and will protect you.

GameofPhones · 18/08/2016 23:59

Yes I resent it, but it has forced me to login after an absence (due to the SWAT debacle login problems). I might not bother another time, though.

Dozer · 19/08/2016 00:01

There should be a special one for lazy Daily Mail journos reminding them to write their own stories.

Here is the blocks that got added to my filters so you never see the pop-up again.

MammaTJ · 19/08/2016 00:03

It doesn't bother me, but I am an opinionated woman who could not imagine being here and not commenting, so not being a member.

Really, who does that?

Do you not shout out loud what you want to tell people and end up almost exploding?

MachiKoro · 19/08/2016 00:04

You should bother, phones, because your username is brilliant!

GameofPhones · 19/08/2016 00:21

Thankyou, Machi. I first thought of GameofMoans but someone beat me to it!

MassDebate · 19/08/2016 06:58

Yanbu. Pissing me right off when I'm trying to mnet at work having a quick browse.

blinkowl · 19/08/2016 07:01

YANBU. I've got no problem with the pop up, it's the forced nature of it.

There should be a cancel / no thanks option. Problem solved.

blinkowl · 19/08/2016 07:07

Also, given a gazillion people must come here via Google Search, this is surely mumsnet shooting themselves in the foot as casual browsers will just hit the back button and mumsnet will miss the chance to introduce the site to a new user.

Also it'll be bad for SEO. One of the metrics Google looks at (it is agreed by SEO experts) is the time spent on a site. As they don't have access to actual webstats they measure this through people clicking on results via Google and how long it takes them to come back to Google.

If, from now on, lots of people bounce out of mumsnet when they see the pop up, Google will likelt think Mumsnet is not publishing content people want to read and it'll harm their - currently excellent - position in Google searches.

Whatthefucknameisntalreadytake · 19/08/2016 08:05

Worra I won't log in from a work device because there is no way I can justify it to my employers who can track things like that. I know there's an argument to say they could equally track me just browsing without logging in, but that's a risk I'm prepared to take. Actually logging in from work isn't.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/08/2016 08:12

Yabu.

And it's a good thing whatthefuck if you should be working not MNing.

dowhatnow · 19/08/2016 08:24

I've just switched off several times rather than log it. It's had the opposite effect to what they want.

Pimmmms · 19/08/2016 08:30

Sorry, I really can't get on board with all this angst. Just a few weeks ago there were threads about making MN more secure because of all the newspapers pinching stories from here. What did everyone expect would happen?!?!

Newes · 19/08/2016 09:30

They will still, lift threads from here. By joining up, as do Trolls.
