To resent MNHQ coercing MNers in to logging in

That's it, really, the little swingy box that just won't go away, until you log in or join. It's turning MN form a genuinely open forum for browsers into one where they track you.

It's got a lot of MNers very angry indeed on the Site Stuff and I want to raise it here for more traffic.

OP posts:
Newes · 18/08/2016 21:04

MN isn't compulsory. It's not a cosy free club for chat, it's an income generating site. MNHQ could not give a mouse's fart what users of the Talk section think, as there will always be someone to replace the ones who leave because of this, or other changes.

maninawomansworld01 · 18/08/2016 21:10

It is annoying!
HQ, either make it a bloody closed forum or get rid of the sodding login thingy - I'll log in if I want to thank you very much!
You can still track your visitors activity perfectly well via the IP address, it's just bloody annoying - especially if browsing on the iPad or mobile.

GladAllOver · 18/08/2016 21:13

Have to agree that it's bloody annoying.

StormyTeaCup · 18/08/2016 21:15

I agree. YANBU.

i have been happily lurking for a year Angry

Yep, bloody annoying.
Especially when pissed/fat fingers can't get your password right

GingerIvy · 18/08/2016 21:18

I was browsing it on my phone today and not at home, so didn't have my log in details when that box popped up and there I was - stuck with the box in the middle of the screen. It's annoying.

Mummaaaaaah · 18/08/2016 21:20

I've been getting even more annoying move straight through to ads? Anyone else had that? Or have I been hacked in some way. One was about big boobies!?!?!?!?

thecolonelbumminganugget · 18/08/2016 21:22

Agreed!

YANBU

havent been able to login since the last time they reset all the passwords so just haven't been posting (just lurking). Turns out I must have two accounts registered to two different email addresses. LOOK AT MY USERNAME! that was not my username before, I was calculatorsatdawn Blush

TheProblemOfSusan · 18/08/2016 21:23

I'm ttc for the first time and really didn't want to officially join until I was actually pregnant, but have been forced into it so I could continue using the resources here. I'm being SUPER dramatic but I feel like I've jinxed myself by joining a site for mums when I'm not one and it'll never happen now. runs off weeping hysterically into the sunset

On a serious note, it's irritating to be forced into membership of a site that looks like it's open. If it's members-only, put everything behind password protection, like Ravelry does. But I'm glad to be here, I feel all properly adulty now!

cunningartificer · 18/08/2016 21:26

Yes!!! Hugely annoying and will probably stop me casually browsing... So good really, will save time.

fuckyourenforcedlogin · 18/08/2016 21:27

Why start another thread?

For the traffic.

OP posts:
cunningartificer · 18/08/2016 21:27

By the way MNHQ that's sarcasm... Not good at all. Bad call I think .

venusandmars · 18/08/2016 21:33

OP I agree. Mumsnet has become more than just an income generating site - it also sets itself as a campaigning organisation and a place where people who are vulnerable (e.g. people experiencing domestic abuse) can find a safe place for support and advice. For many people that starts by lurking and browsing before they have the confidence to post.

I have been a longstanding poster on the bravebabes threads. I doubt I would have posted about my alcohol problem if I hadn't been able to read all the posts for 3 weeks before I registered and tentatively made my first post. Five years later, I barely drink, thanks to the support I got here.

But I log on and post from my pc, and never on my phone (which other people in my family can use). But I've lost count of the times when I read encouraging posts on my phone and was strengthened in my resolve not to drink.

Ironically today I couldn't even read the posts on the site stuff (or at least not beyond the first page) because of the damn log-in box.

WorraLiberty · 18/08/2016 21:34

YANBU

It just makes them come across as utterly desperate and that's a shame, because they don't need to be.

Like sometimes when you Google for a product you want to buy and the minute you click on a shopping website, a box pops up virtually begging you to sign up or to give feedback on the layout.

It instantly makes me hit the back button.

AnniePower · 18/08/2016 21:35

It's like having to go through Border Control on my way into a clothes shop. V V V offputting

WorraLiberty · 18/08/2016 21:36

Maybe they've started to believe the trolls who always start a thread with

"I've been lurking for years, but only just plucked up the courage to join and post"

They're nearly always PBPs though Grin

SeasonalVag · 18/08/2016 21:38

I assumed it was to outwit the thieving daily mail dickheDs

BlancheBlue · 18/08/2016 21:40

Don't like it then don't use the site. The amount of prow who think mn is some sort of social services department is ridiculous. It is a commercial site.

CheeseFlavouredDiscs · 18/08/2016 21:46

YANBU - pop ups like that drive me nuts!

However, you can easily get rid of all the ads and the stupid pop up using free software (called AdBlock) that my geeky husband has downloaded for me. It has a clever feature that allows you to get rid of annoying pop ups as soon as they appear, and you never get that pop up again.

Frumious · 18/08/2016 21:46

Not on MumsnetHQ, not on.

thecolonelbumminganugget · 18/08/2016 21:52

'Don't like it, don't use it' is one view.

Another would be if you have something that is comercially successful and you make a change that the users don't like then it's in your interests as the provider to listen to that feedback. Fewer users =less cash

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 18/08/2016 21:58

I'm totally confused - I mumsnet on my iPhone. Don't use any apps, just the webpage. I'm permanently logged in. Is this the app with this issue?

Chikara · 18/08/2016 21:58

Absolutely agree. I came across site when in despair one day about my DS. Couldn't believe the useful stuff I read and the feeling that there was help out there. Read for ages before I joined. Certainly wouldn't have joined straightaway especially as my "interest" was the development of my child. It took a while before I realised how much the site had to offer.

Forced log-in would damage the brand - I no longer trust the site in quite the same way and am therefore less likely to trust the brands it recommends and the integrity of the campaigns

Hulababy · 18/08/2016 22:05

I use the app on my phone, or the website on my laptop and I am permanently logged in. Can't see the issue.
Couldn't be faffed with not being logged in and having to sign in every time.
So a non issue for me and can't see the problem personally.
Many forums require you to be logged in to view.
