Bread bins

Recently moved to a lovely new home and decided that what would work really well on my bare expanse of kitchen worktop would be a bread bin. So I had a little look in a few shops and found all the nice ones have the word bread painted or embossed on the side. Why, just why Confused I know it's going to have bread in, I don't need to have it spelled out for me! AIBU? Do most folk with bread bins forget where they've stashed their loaf and feel grateful for the reminder?

Brabantia steel. Best. Bread. Bin. Ever.

Topseyt · 17/08/2016 23:06

I don't have a bread bin. I do have a freezer which is usually where most of the bread is stored.

I have jars that say "tea" and "coffee" though. Is that enough of a crime?BlushGrin

I also have a butter dish but it isn't labelled so I guess that is safe enough. Grin

What the fuck is the point of a bread bin?

Genuinely interested.

KeepOnPlodding · 17/08/2016 23:11

My bread bin contains crackers, oatcakes, Ryvita and a random packet of raisins.

The real bread has to sit on top looking as if it's been evicted from its own home.

OoOh, I love that Next one with a drawer - perfect for my bathroom for various stuff.

(wonders why bathroom storage jars do not say TAMPONS on the side. Or why toilet bowls are not emblazoned with SHIT WEE PUKE round the top. Are we better at remembering what our household accessories are for when we go upstairs, do you think?)

Blu · 17/08/2016 23:15

Reality: to stop flies walking on the bread? Keeps the crumbs contained? Do you just leave your loaf on the worktop? A bin is less necessary if you buy sliced loaves in a bag, I guess.

Blu · 17/08/2016 23:18

I would ask 'what the fuck is the point of THIS thing!

Enidblyton1 · 17/08/2016 23:18

We use an old panatone tin as a bread bin - one of the lovely big ones you get at Christmas from John Lewis

Notso · 17/08/2016 23:20

The point of the bread bin is to stop the bread going as stale as it would left out. I think.

When we bought a bread bin H Refused to contemplate any that had "Bread" on it. We wondered if it's for the benefit of people who cannot guess what's inside. It was so hard to find a plain one though!
Later that year my grandparents gave us one for Christmas emblazoned with the offending word "Bread".
We keep it in the cellar where it stores spare light bulbs. Ha! That'll learn it!

elephantoverthehill · 17/08/2016 23:26

My very old enamel bread bin is labelled 'Cakes'. I have had it since before Dcs (20 years) they can all manage to locate the bread, despite the mislabelling, but cannot return it. 4 times today and yesterday I put the bread back. What I really dislike are those signs that declare 'Home' as if you didn't know where you were.

honeylulu · 17/08/2016 23:32

A little off topic but I'm equally bemused by baby gros with "Baby" on. Just in car you mistook your beloved offspring for a teapot or something.

glueandstick · 17/08/2016 23:40

The tea, coffee, sugar and fruit tea containers are identical in our house. Apparently I'm odd. I like them.

Justanothernumber2 · 17/08/2016 23:43

The point of a bread bin is to keep the bread fresh!

FinnegansCake · 17/08/2016 23:46

YANBU. I feel the same about decorative signs that say "kitchen" etc.

When I enter a room that has cupboards, fridge, cooker and microwave I don't need a sign to remind me where I am.

Likewise the wooden letters that spell "bath" - I recognised it as a bathtub, I wasn't planning to make tea in it Confused

JassyRadlett · 17/08/2016 23:48

To the freezer bread people - what do you do when you want a sandwich? Do you only ever have sliced bread? Or have I got this wrong and you keep the loaf in use elsewhere?

Whitelisbon · 17/08/2016 23:52

My breadbin says bread in it. It's currently holding straws, cakes, and chocolate. The bread is sitting on top as there's no room inside.
I've never found tea/coffee jars that I like, so the teabags are in an old coffee jar, and the sugar is in its bag Blush

eightbluebirds · 18/08/2016 00:29

My bread just goes in the cupboard with everything else. I considered buying one but could never find one I liked and I've not missed it.

elephantoverthehill · 18/08/2016 00:47

Just doing my nightly, before bed check and I have put the bread back in the bread bin AGAIN.

Lonecatwithkitten · 18/08/2016 00:53

My bread bin says 'No 4' who knows why, DD appears to be able to locate the bread I am a coeliac so all mine is in the freezer.

PaperdollCartoon · 18/08/2016 00:54

DP and I have been after a nice, wooden, roll lid type bread bin since we moved into a house with a kitchen big enough to have one 8 month/ ago. Apparently they no longer exist, or if they do we can't find them. We don't want metal, coloured or with a top lid, it's natural wood bureau style or nothing. We don't mind if it says bread on it or not. Anyone know where to find this mystical breadbin? Preferably online or in Surrey.

tararabumdeay · 18/08/2016 01:08

The Coffee Tea Sugar Biscuit set was essential in the 70s if a man needed to help himself if the little woman was working for pin money and wasn't on the other side of the serving hatch.

HippyChickMama · 18/08/2016 01:19

I hate labelled storage too. I have this bread bin, I got it from TK Maxx but it's available on Amazon too. I believe it comes in different colours

I didn't have a bread bin when I met DH as I'm a freezer bread person because the bread is homemade and tastes like it's just been cooked when it's defrosted rather than a few days old. DH did have a bread bin, the nice Brabantia one others have mentioned, although he doesn't eat bread, so we use it for storing chocolate, dried fruit and seeds. I'm feeling a bit disappointed now that it didn't have "BREAD" written in it as I'd have enjoyed the act of rebellion.

If I want a sandwich, Jassy, I get a couple of slices out at least 30 minutes before I want to eat it and it's fine.
