Feeling slightly anxious, not as much as DD though, who does not want to talk about it.

Plan B ideas for a back up, or AIBU to be thinking this way?

Clearing Advice
Just wanted to say good luck to all those DC getting their results today and all those supportive parents who are trying not to appear too concerned! This is the first year in six we have not been waiting on results having had 2 DCs sitting varies exams and being a teacher I fully understand the pressure.
If things don’t go according to plan you have to move fast.
My DD missed her grades a couple of years ago and was devastated. The hard part was getting her to face up to it and sit her down and start calling the Uni’s from the UCAs list ASAP to secure a place elsewhere as they go very fast. If unsure about the Uni especially if your DC did not go to an open day or investigate the course before results be ready to jump in the car and go to the Unis this weekend as most will have a clearing open morning this Saturday. Make sure the accommodation is where you DC want it and the price you can afford as clearing students are sometimes offered the most expensive accommodation. It’s really worth calling the accommodation office a number of times. It’s really important for fresher’s to be as close to the Uni hub as possible so they can really involve their selves in activities especially those who have arrived via clearing as they often feel compromised.
I know my DD felt stupid and didn’t want to see her friends, most who had got their places. She was very upset, withdraw from social media and just wanted to shut herself in her room! Thankfully her loyal friends came around on day 4 and she realised that it had not been all plain sailing for them either. However be there to sort out lists for them, even call if they are too upset to dial. The Uni clearing centres are very understanding however they have grades which must be upheld.
She secured a place at Kent who were fantastic but decided on the moving in weekend, car packed , not to go as she wanted to resit. She is now very happy at York Uni, which I recommend, doing a completely different course, which she loves, than she intended to do at 17 and has returned to her positive self, reflecting how it worked out for the best!!!
Keep away from other parents and just get on with the job, and it really is a very important one, of supporting you DCs as they really need you today.
Good luck I will be thinking of you all.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 18/08/2016 08:35

Well done to all those who got the grades they needed. For those who didn't, hopefully they will be successful in clearing.
Ds hasn't got his grades yet (can collect from 9am) but has had rejection from 2nd choice uni but confirmation of place from 1st choice. They were both asking the same (AAA ) so suspet ds has dropped a grade somewhere but as 1st choice uni still want him, who cares? Smile

SlinkyVagabond · 18/08/2016 09:46

Dd has fucked up, bcb instead of predicted AAC. She's currently trying to get through to insurance to ask to be released into clearing. Her mate did same and has got a place at Newcastle.

UsedToBeAPaxmanFan · 18/08/2016 10:50

So sorry to hear that slinky but maybe there is benefit in going through Clearing? Lots of places are available and more will be released over the next couple of days.

Dawndonnaagain · 18/08/2016 11:03

We're okay this morning. Twin one got insurance, twin two got first choice. Phew!
Good luck to everyone!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/08/2016 11:11

Thanks hiding. He's very particular about the course he wants to do and only half of the unis offer it amyway. He rang all the clearing unis this morning with the course and was rejected by all outright except one which is quite low ranked, and not quite the course he wants.

We are trying to get our head around whether to take that option or whether he should spend a year to do two resits. We're all sitting round like someones died!! It's awful.

SlinkyVagabond · 18/08/2016 11:24

It's all worked out, after a manic hour calling round, she's got in through clearing at Manchester Met! It's smiles all round. Good luck to everyone else! 🍾

angieloumc · 18/08/2016 11:40

We're very happy today, son got his first choice, Lancaster. His requirements were ABB but he got in on ABC! He didn't want his insurance at all so would've asked to be released but no need.
Well done to everyone who's got what they wanted and good luck to those going into clearing.

OrlandaFuriosa · 18/08/2016 11:53

Slinky, well done. Through thick, good luck. Well done to everyone fir surviving, parent managers as well as the strikers themselves.

Newnamealready · 18/08/2016 13:03

Have surprised myself by coming over slightly teary on this thread. I am now a doctor in my twenties and still remember results day as one of the most stressful days of my life. Whilst thanks to winter modules I was fairly confident of making my top choice, the whole family were incredibly stressed waiting to hear whether twin DB had made it into Oxford (he had Smile).

The pressure on young people seems immense, and I imagine it is only increasing with the end of winter modules. Flowers to all the supportive parents on here and good luck to all the DCs getting their results!

charmund · 18/08/2016 13:49

Plan B not needed here either ! DS needed BBC for Aberystwyth to do History and got it - so so pleased and relieved. Lots of his friends have dropped the odd grade but still got into their first choice and those doing clearing have had some great offers.

Well done to all of them - and to those of us in the wings trying to support and encourage them.

Now for DDs GCSE's next week..

mysteryfairy · 18/08/2016 13:57

Bone idle DS2 needed BBC for his first choice and got CDD. His insurance was a higher offer - BBB - but they have accepted him. We've rung them twice to check they are sure! I'm wondering if he actually wins for missing an offer by the highest margin and still getting a place.

Have mixed feelings as yet again he doesn't learn his lesson and feels like a bit of a fraud on those who worked hard for 3 Bs to end up on a course with him.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/08/2016 14:52

So envious mystery is it in a less popular subject? DS's BCD was rejected when he needed BBB. We're gutted, he is so capable of getting all B's.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 18/08/2016 15:20

DD got second offer, was really upset. We went to get her results. They didn't make sense as she got what she needed. Phoned the first uni and they have no record of one of her results so she didn't have enough UMS points even tho she does IYSWIM.
We've emailed it all over to them and now have to sit and wait.
She's happy with her second choice but what should have been a morning of celebrating was a bit of a disappointment.
She's being very pragmatic tho, what will be will be she says and I am very proud of her as we all are of our children.
Well done to everyone.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 18/08/2016 15:25

Slinky I went to MMU. I loved it. Which campus will she be on?

mysteryfairy · 18/08/2016 15:30

Throughthick it's an NHS course and last year of funding so it's very unexpected that he's on as I thought there would be a rush of people wanting to avoid the fees from 2017.

Apparently in his favour are 13 A* and A at GCSE, an A in a level general studies in addition to the CDD convincing them he can produce academic work and the fact he was a very strong candidate at interview.

shovetheholly · 18/08/2016 15:45

I'm looking at this from the other end - DH is a prof and head of a uni department.

They do really, really care about the prospective students and they do genuinely agonise over the decisions they are making. There are usually constraints on who can/can't be accepted imposed by the uni, but special cases can be argued with management.

I would urge anyone who has done better/worse than expected to get on the blower and have a word with institutions about courses. And think laterally - if you don't make one subject, is there another just adjacent to it that you might really enjoy with slightly lower entry grades? (Swapping geography for urban planning, for instance? Or history for philosophy?)

I know it feels terrifying, but it really is worth a call. Lots of places have under-recruited this year, there's a lot of places available. Good luck!

justdon't - I'm hope as soon as the admin error is sorted, she'll be into her first choice! These things do happen, most departments have provision to deal with it. Fingers crossed.

LobsterQuadrille · 18/08/2016 15:49

Charmund - congratulations to your DS! I went to Aberystwyth and absolutely loved it - still in touch with masses of people from there.

We've had a morning of clearing, with some good offers - DD will be going to York and is very happy.

charmund · 18/08/2016 16:09

Oh Lobster that is brilliant news - one of my best friends went to York and loved every minute (plus she tells me that the shops are amazing!)

Justdon't - I am so sorry to about the admin errror - any update? Surely they have to give her a place as she got the grades ( stirring vague contract law memories..)

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 18/08/2016 16:23

Good luck to him, mystery, it is nice to hear when candidates who don't make the grades needed still get in.

justdontevenfuckingstart · 18/08/2016 16:25

No update, you would think that she met the requirements so surely they have to offer her a place?
Don't know. We are just sitting and waiting unfortunately.
We are both a bit disappointed that the shine has been taken off a bit but we were just saying shit happens and she's still got a place at a good uni.

shovetheholly · 18/08/2016 17:07

justdont - I'm sorry you haven't heard, your poor DD must be very worried. It may be that the documentation you have sent has been delayed between the clearing centre and the department because it's an unconventional case rather than a standard clearing request. I would maybe ring up and chase? Unfortunately, the academics may be leaving soon so it might be tomorrow before you get an answer. Sad I'm very much keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you all!

OrlandaFuriosa · 18/08/2016 17:24

And I can report that DS did better, loads better, than his school who fucked up his applications. A really good basis for his gap year and reapplying. Which is what he wanted to do and has sorted himself. And parents and he enjoying a childish sensation of going LA LA le LA LA.

SCHOOL'S OUT FOR EVER!

OrlandaFuriosa · 18/08/2016 17:25

But thinking of everyone who is still in the waiting game, loads of friends are.
