I've had a really really shit year. I'm now in my new house and mostly feeling optimistic and hopeful. I used to hate inspirational signs - but now feel I could really use one - something to hang by the front door as a little pep talk to myself.

However intried to find one yesterday and most made me Hmm

Do you have one and what does it say?

I like "The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there". It´s a quote from L.P.Hartley. I find it inspirational, but I´m not sure I would want it pinned to my wall. I just think about it from time to time.

DesolateWaist · 16/08/2016 17:14

One of my favourite quotes is from Three Men in a Boat:

“Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need - a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing. ”

In the midst of winter I found that within me was an invincible summer.

Three little birds - representing the Bob Marley song with the chorus 'don't worry about a thing, cause every little thing is gonna be alright'.

daydreamnation · 16/08/2016 17:58

I have two I like

'work hard and be nice to people' I have always told my dc that its our house rule Smile
'don't grow up, it's a trap' not exactly inspirational but always makes me smile!

RoboticSealpup · 16/08/2016 20:22

I really like this one, which is often (I think wrongly) attributed to Winston Churchill: "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."

RoboticSealpup · 16/08/2016 20:25

I also like "God loves a trier", which I take to mean that good things are more likely to happen if you try to make them happen. Again and again, if necessary!

Irelephant · 16/08/2016 20:28

Another Winston one "when your going through hell keep going"

Reminds me of my grandad. I'm having it as a tattoo not a sign.

user7755 · 16/08/2016 20:32

I have one that says 'what would elvis do?'

fancynotplain · 16/08/2016 23:36

I used to hate these signs too, but last year after a really shitty time for our family I got one from The Range which says 'we may not have it all together, but together we have it all'

raviolidreaming · 16/08/2016 23:48

I have one in my bedroom from Dunelm: wake up and be awesome!

Slowtrain2dawn · 16/08/2016 23:48

The desiderata always puts life in perspective for me.

TaterTots · 16/08/2016 23:55

Come to live in the real world.

CinnamonTwist · 17/08/2016 15:58

Irelephant if you're having that as a tattoo it should be 'you're' not 'your' ... I wouldn't have bothered pointing it out normally but it would be awful to realise it's wrong after the fact...!

There are some really lovely sayings on this thread Smile

Treeclot · 17/08/2016 17:02

I agree there's some gems here.

I've settled on "Happiness is a Choice". It's how I hope my son will approach life - positive and in control. Now looking at personalised art websites.

Thanks so much everyone!

This is one of my all time favourite poems

As a kid I had a poster from Bill and Ted "Be excellent to each other. And... party on dudes!"

I keep thinking I should try and find that poster again as I think it is a perfect sentiment for how to live life.

AliceInUnderpants · 17/08/2016 18:08

I have one by my front door that says "No rain, no rainbows".

RainyDayBear · 17/08/2016 18:29

"Cinderella: proof that the right pair of shoes CAN change your life" always makes me smile.

I used to have a postcard that said 'Just when the caterpillar thought its world was over, it became a butterfly.' I bought it at a time when things were feeling quite bleak and I still love it.

holdinghands · 17/08/2016 19:01

I prefer song lyrics, probably because I always have the radio on! Two of my favourites are:

"Be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause"

"Your time has come to shine, all your dreams are on their way"

I'll let you work out the songsSmile

Crikeyblimey · 17/08/2016 19:11

My late mum often quoted this from some poem or other.

Ships sail east and ships sail west
Whilst the self same breezes blow
It is the set of the sail
And not the gale
That sends them where they go.

Often shortened by her to 'it's the set of the sail' when she wanted to make a point about us being in control of our own destinies.

WhooooAmI24601 · 17/08/2016 19:41

I'm not a fan of these things generally but my best friend got me a little plaque I love with "I'm not afraid of the storm for I'm learning how to sail my ship" on. It lives in my bathroom so I can glare at it while I'm using the loo.

caramelchaos · 17/08/2016 19:49

Mine says 'when life gives you lemons, squeeze them in peoples eyes' Grin
