Inspired by another thread, are there any books that you have really enjoyed but that others hate?

I saw We need to talk about Kevin mentioned several times relating to people who can't stand it, whereas it's one of my favourite books of all time!

I loved One Day, though most people seem to find it a bit crap. It was all very familiar and bittersweet.

Hare anything by Ishiguro. I honestly think he is incredibly overrated.

Possession is a fantastic novel.

Sally YY to Vilette - one of my all-time favourites (though I do love J.E. too)

Talking of unlikeable characters ..... Trespass by Rose Tremain is full of them , but I thought was an utterly brilliant book

However , I couldnt get on with 'Restoration' (which so many people I Know really rated of hers) .. and as for 'Merival, a man of his time'.. .. I gave it a go ( having not liked him much in restoration but gave it up.. I just really couldnt give a FF about him I found..

Oh my goodness sazerashez I'm reading 'A Little Life' at the moment whilst willing it to end.

I really enjoy jojo moyes style of writing, really enjoyed the girl you left behind and me before you. Not usually one for soppy stories but the way she writes is stunning.

Liked sj Watson's, before I go to sleep.

Obviouspretzel · 17/08/2016 21:42

I loved A Little Life, flawed but brilliant. Everyone seems to be slagging it heavily online.

Expected to love Pynchon after being recommended his books, but was bored to tears.

Hygellig · 17/08/2016 21:46

I enjoyed Kevin as well (although I read it pre-kids).

I found Wolf Hall a slog and really didn't get why it got such rave reviews.
I enjoyed I Am Pilgrim and I also quite like Dan Brown's Robert Langdon books (although I wish that for once RL could meet a woman of his own age).

Completely agree re Time's Arow. I got it out on an audio book and listened to it in the car and my dyslexic son has it as one of his all time favourite books.
I still sometimes wonder if I've really got the meaning of it right. Could he only do that because his soul was back to front ? It is a brilliant thought provoking book though. Money was the Martin Amis book many raved about and I hated that. Also love "we need to talk about Kevin" but think Lionel Shriver is wonderful.

I enjoyed the Da Vinci code. I didn't get the snobbery about Dan Brown. It's just a story for feck's sake. If you don't like it close the book and read something else.
I think telling a good story is often under rated by critics who like all the descriptive poncery more than what is actually happening.
I like Christopher Brookmyre because he gets on with the storys. A snowball in hell is my favourite Brookmyre story.

Stories. I can spell on paper, just not when typing!

spanky2 · 17/08/2016 22:02

ThinkPinkStink I loved Hunger Games too. It is well written, in my opinion! I Remember You by Yrsa Sigurdardorttir is fantastic thriller/ghost story. Like all her books I didn't guess the end. I usually guess the end in thrillers. Good pace, tension and more twists than a twisty turny thing. I really can't recommend this author more highly.
I hate 1984. Too bleak and negative. I also disliked before I go to sleep. Great start, but tailed off until I really couldn't care.

Charley50 · 17/08/2016 22:23

Kevin is even better to read after you've had kids; as it taps into primal fears, and insecurities about your own parenting. Love that book for exploring such a dark theme.

The Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde

phlebasconsidered · 18/08/2016 20:02

I have pressed "Hangover Square" by Patrick Hamilton on many people after I finished it crying. Nobody else has ever liked it.

I find Harry Potter underwhelming, always recommend Pullman instead to my class. Or better yet, Alan Garner, who died last week. His lyrical writing infused my childhood with a sense of wonder. I still look out for Weirdstones.

braceybracegirl · 18/08/2016 21:24

just started reading The Slap. characters are awful and its a bit ridiculous how awful they are. The men are so sexist and middle aged drug users but weirdly i really like it and cant put it down.
