Inspired by another thread, are there any books that you have really enjoyed but that others hate?

I saw We need to talk about Kevin mentioned several times relating to people who can't stand it, whereas it's one of my favourite books of all time!

The 50 shades books Blush

bibbitybobbityyhat · 15/08/2016 21:48

My most frequently read fiction is Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin.

Omg that is a good old read. It is a thriller/horror story (adapted to a reasonably credible film starring Mia Farrow) which you can read many times and STILL be a bit horrified by the ending.

Twodogsandahooch · 15/08/2016 21:50

I was coming on to say the Slap too. I recommended it on another forum once and was completely shot down. Yes the characters were all unlikeable but that made it for me

WhatTimeIsItCuckoo · 15/08/2016 21:58

I didn't read 'The Slap' but watched the TV series and loved it. Very unlikeable characters I agree, but I also agree that that's what made it so good! Grin

Charley50 · 15/08/2016 21:59

... Kevin is one of the only books, apart from children's books, that I have read more than once.
I love it and loved the ambiguity of it. In fact I might just read it again.

I also loved the Slap.

Welshwabbit · 15/08/2016 22:00

I thought "The Casual Vacancy" was brilliant. I sobbed my heart out at the end. Most people I know who have read it hated it.

Bettercallsaul1 · 15/08/2016 22:00

Loved Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies - can't wait for the third part of the trilogy.

Also loved Possession by A.S. Byatt.

Charley50 · 15/08/2016 22:01

Ooh I want to read Rosemary's Baby - love that film!

Geraniumred · 15/08/2016 22:05

Love P.G Woodehouse and also 'Three Men in a Boat'
really hated 'Eat, Love, Pray' it seemed so self-indulgent.

Badders123 · 15/08/2016 22:07

3 men in a boat is ace Smile
Also a confederacy of dunces

Geraniumred · 15/08/2016 22:12

I've never heard of 'A Confederacy of Dunces' , Badders. It sounds good.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 15/08/2016 22:15

On the flip side, Perfume by Patrick Suskind (sp?) is a book everyone my age has read and raved about, but I loathed it and gave up after a few chapters.

Ilovewineandcrisps · 15/08/2016 22:17

Definately going to try a few of the mentioned books on here, plus I am going to re read Kevin Grin

The casual vacancy was dreadful.

WhatTimeIsItCuckoo · 15/08/2016 22:23

It's quite fascinating isn't it, the difference in everyone's tastes? Personally I couldn't stand 50 shades and thought Christian Grey was a knob but I love reading and discussing books and think all us book lovers should be open to, and embrace, our differences. In my experience book clubs can make a lone person who's liked/disliked something and/or interpreted it in a different way feel like a weirdo and I've belonged to more than one. But it wouldn't do for us all to be the same and it takes all sorts to make a world, as I've oft heard said Smile

Agree re Irving & Roth plus adore Updike's Rabbit series of books, anything by Mantell, Green, Llosa and Marquez.
Books I have recommended recently for friends (and all loved - or said they did!) - 'the sisters brothers' and 'ablutions' by De Witt and my favourite this year so far 'a brief history of 7 killings' by Marlon James.
Though they make great films ! I can't stand anything by Hardy!

tralaaa · 15/08/2016 22:27

When God was a rabbit
Life death a vanilla slices

Badders123 · 15/08/2016 22:28

It's brilliant!
How could I forget Marquez??
Or graham Greene!? The heart of the matter is one of the most heartbreaking books I've ever read

Badders123 · 15/08/2016 22:30

I don't do chick lit - just doesn't grip me
I did enjoy the first couple of Phillipa Gregory books but then she just got silly
So many books....so little time!

winewolfhowls · 15/08/2016 22:30

Wilt. I think it's hilarious but have never met anyone else who thinks so

KatsutheClockworkOctopus · 15/08/2016 22:35

Cloud Atlas - I loved it but have never met anyone else who did.

Conversely I hated One Day so much that I get annoyed with all the people who say it's good.

Jaimx86 · 15/08/2016 22:35

Essential, thanks for recommending We" / мы by Zamyatin. It looks like a great read. Both my DP and I have just downloaded it.

Winewolf, I also enjoyed Wilt.

I love American Psycho.

Badders123 · 15/08/2016 22:39

The God of small things - beautiful book
I read a lot of biographies and autobiographies too - a real shock was how good Andre agassis autobiography is!!

Charley50 · 15/08/2016 22:42

T'would be very odd if we all liked the same books; we're not robots!
