To get the right arse with constant 'Bradley Wiggins greatest Olympian ever'

Marilynsbigsister · 13/08/2016 20:25

Whilst I think his latest win is fantastic and wonderful etc - I am being wound of the clock with BBC news telling me every hour ON the hour that Bradley Wiggins is now the greatest British Olympian of all time.

Part of me feels really petty for even getting in to this, as just getting to compete in an Olympic Games is a phenomenal achievement but if the BBC is going to make ridiculous statements like this, then they need to 1. Get their facts straight and 2. Just admit that they are still in the dark ages with the 'does he take sugar' mentality. ( Ahhh..aren't those disabled Olympians a-maz-ing .. Look what they can overcome..)

Facts :

Bradley Wiggins 5 golds
1 silver
2 Bronze

Across 5 Olympics.

*Greatest Ever Olympian
*
Tanni Grey-Thompson. 11 Golds
4 Silver
1 Bronze.

But then again are the BBC asking us to understand that 'Para' Olympians aren't 'proper' Olympians ? Really ? Surely an Olypic medal is an Olympic medal ? I wasn't aware para Olypic medals were second class !

I thought it may even have been standard BBC blindness of female achievement woman but that doesn't rub either as David Weir (6 gold 2 silver 2 Bronze) knocks Bradley Wiggins into a cocked hat medal-wise....

AIBU to consider the BBC to be exhibiting rank disablist clap trap that demeans the amazing achievements of our Olympians because they are 'disabled' - or do I just need to have a WineWine and calm down after 7 hrs in the car ...

Greatest EVER Olympian is Tanni Grey-Thompson.

His attitude rocks.

GingerbreadGingerbread · 13/08/2016 22:58

I find him very annoying and thought the way he stuck his tongue out during the national anthem was rude and disrespectful.

Cooroo · 13/08/2016 22:59

Seriously? I just watched it. It looked to me like a moment of irrepressible fun from someone who was thrilled to have won. Is the national anthem really about respecting the queen? I just think of it as the tune they play when GB wins.

neonrainbow · 13/08/2016 23:04

I can't get excited about michael phelps either. He's good at swimming, sure, but because there are so many events in olympic swimming he can sweep them all up. I would rather admire someone who earns fewer medals in events where there is only 1 gold medal available rather than swimming where there is over 100 medals across men and women.

I don't know about Mamils, there are plenty of middle aged ladies clogging up the roads on a Sunday. I intend to be one of them tomorrow

lljkk · 13/08/2016 23:13

I still quite like Wiggins but I think the hype BBC have done about him is ridiculous. BW doesn't even like the attention.

Women's pursuit team rocks, especially Katie Archibald's hair :).

Doggity · 13/08/2016 23:13

bearleft I agree about Laura Trott. I grew up in the same place as her - I'm a bit older - and she is a legend. She has so much humility and such a team player. There are more great things to come from her.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 13/08/2016 23:21

I'm not a Wiggo fan; I think as a 'Sir' he should have remained solemn or sung the anthem, and he is a dick in interviews. I understand the whole big ego-super athlete thing, but then look at some of the lovely interviews today like Desiree Henry after her running heat. What a sunny, cheery, polite girl.

Wiggo also talks about the other members of his team as though they are little children. However, as others have said, I'm sure he doesn't give one tiny shite what I think!!!

clary · 13/08/2016 23:31

I loved what he did in God Save that German woman.

But then I like a bit of irreverence and it made me smile. And I don't accept that it's our National Anthem, it's just a nasty song (knavish tricks!?) about someone with lots of money, not about the country I care about.

Maybe Wiggo is a Republican yay.

I take your point OP but I think Tanni Grey-Thompson is the greatest British Paralympian?

clary · 13/08/2016 23:33

Also I am a very middle aged woman wearing Lycra (not on a bike, running along the pavement). Is that against the rules? Oh dear, sorry! not really

AnyFucker · 13/08/2016 23:40

He'd like to be the Usain Bolt of the cycling world

Not. Happening.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/08/2016 23:41

I think he's a bit twatty

DH is pointing out he is the greatest British Olympian and Tanni is the greatest British Paralympian - he's claiming the bbc language is right

GreatFuckability · 13/08/2016 23:45

I think he's ace. he won the medal, not the queen or anyone else and he's entitled to celebrate it as he sees fit.

Paralympians are not olympians, and vice versa so YABU there i think.

Charley50 · 13/08/2016 23:51

I'm a bit tired of him. Last night's medal was for a team sport but Sir. Bradley. Wiggins....! gets all the special graphics and mini- films made about him.

LuluJakey1 · 13/08/2016 23:52

Talented cyclist, bit of a knacker as a person.

Salmotrutta · 13/08/2016 23:57

I'm not a fan.

BeJayKayven · 14/08/2016 00:00

Yeah Sir Bradley is a republican Hmm

Great athlete and competitor yes, but as a person - He's just a dickhead.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/08/2016 00:04

When BW was making his speech to celebrate winning the TDF he pretended to be calling the bingo.Hmm Not funny, very disrespectful to the French on their big occasion and, quite frankly, just made him look like a dick.

In my observation, men tend to love him, women think he is a real idiot.

age81 · 14/08/2016 00:06

He's a TIT, nothing more to say!

MintChocAddict · 14/08/2016 01:35

Am not a fan either. He's like a particularly annoying attention seeking child.
And he thinks he's so cool. He's not.

powershowerforanhour · 14/08/2016 01:58

Mo Farah is cooler. He has just won gold despite falling over.

EttaJ · 14/08/2016 02:14

He's an odious little man and also a thief, he stole from his own "charity" I canny stand to look at him. I hope he'd fall off.

MintChocAddict · 14/08/2016 02:15

Way cooler! Despite the Mobot... Wink

steff13 · 14/08/2016 03:23

I'm sure USA would describe Michael Phelps as the greatest Olympian. It all goes on what you use to judge.

Indeed. For instance, if you go by gold medals, Michael Phelps now has 23.
