To get the right arse with constant 'Bradley Wiggins greatest Olympian ever'

Marilynsbigsister · 13/08/2016 20:25

Whilst I think his latest win is fantastic and wonderful etc - I am being wound of the clock with BBC news telling me every hour ON the hour that Bradley Wiggins is now the greatest British Olympian of all time.

Part of me feels really petty for even getting in to this, as just getting to compete in an Olympic Games is a phenomenal achievement but if the BBC is going to make ridiculous statements like this, then they need to 1. Get their facts straight and 2. Just admit that they are still in the dark ages with the 'does he take sugar' mentality. ( Ahhh..aren't those disabled Olympians a-maz-ing .. Look what they can overcome..)

Facts :

Bradley Wiggins 5 golds
1 silver
2 Bronze

Across 5 Olympics.

*Greatest Ever Olympian
*
Tanni Grey-Thompson. 11 Golds
4 Silver
1 Bronze.

But then again are the BBC asking us to understand that 'Para' Olympians aren't 'proper' Olympians ? Really ? Surely an Olypic medal is an Olympic medal ? I wasn't aware para Olypic medals were second class !

I thought it may even have been standard BBC blindness of female achievement woman but that doesn't rub either as David Weir (6 gold 2 silver 2 Bronze) knocks Bradley Wiggins into a cocked hat medal-wise....

AIBU to consider the BBC to be exhibiting rank disablist clap trap that demeans the amazing achievements of our Olympians because they are 'disabled' - or do I just need to have a WineWine and calm down after 7 hrs in the car ...

Greatest EVER Olympian is Tanni Grey-Thompson.

The Piers Motgan/Wiggins exchange was from the 2012 games - I shared it then. It's really funny.
He is being a bit of an arse, but he is a bloody fantastic sportsman.

MrsJayy · 13/08/2016 21:17

The paralyimpics have their own greatest ever which will be mentioned in september when they are on they are a different organisation and not comparable imo. Yanbu though the other week it was Sir steve regrave who was the greatest olympian in the world ever .. wish they would make up their mind

cardibach · 13/08/2016 21:19

MrsJayy Redgrave was the greatest British Olympian until Wiggins got this medal. No mind changing, just new medals!

backwardpossom · 13/08/2016 21:21

I think YABU - they are separate events. Linked, but not the same.

Re: Wiggins. Yeah he's a twat, but I'm pretty sure he couldn't give two shits what I think of him...

BestIsWest · 13/08/2016 21:22

Yvaine Grin Mamils will now be added to our family vocabulary.

MrsJayy · 13/08/2016 21:25

Ah ok caught up now

PerspicaciaTick · 13/08/2016 21:26

Re: Wiggins. Yeah he's a twat, but I'm pretty sure he couldn't give two shits what I think of him...

Given he is behaving like a 14yo boy who has been called to the front of class to receive a prize for a good piece of work (all awkward arms, shifty eyes and inappropriate gurning), I think he cares very, very much what people think about him...and is trying to pretend he doesn't.

MrsJayy · 13/08/2016 21:29

I read Mamils on here a while ago I laughed for to long

JacquettaWoodville · 13/08/2016 21:34

Laura Trott has 3 golds now and may get a fourth later this week. Here's hoping she knocks Bradley off one day.

Yanbu re Paralympics though, OP

GlitterNails · 13/08/2016 21:34

bojorojo - it's not like the UK supports all disabled people either. Many of us have to fund our own wheelchairs, prostheses, etc, and have lost DLA/PIP and care. Some might be in the position of having enough support to train for a sport, but it's not the case for the vast majority of disabled people in this country.

Also, you could make the same argument about the Olympics in general - some countries have better facilities, more financial support, than others.

alltouchedout · 13/08/2016 21:37

I don't like Bradley Wiggins at all.
Which I am sure bothers him very much.

ShowOfHands · 13/08/2016 21:44

I admire him massively.

And I liked his podium moment. He was having a huge moment in his career and seeing his sombre face on a huge screen and reacted in the moment.

He's a driven, talented man with sheer determination. I quite like him.

JudyCoolibar · 13/08/2016 21:48

Slightly off the point, but I was wondering why, when they announce the names of the medal winners, they call him "Sir Bradley Wiggins" when they don't call the others "Mr John Smith".

ceeveebee · 13/08/2016 21:51

I know winning any medal is an amazing achievement, but is it not "easier" to win 5 gold medals in cycling (which seems to have about 30 different events) than it is in other sports eg heptathlon, where there is only one opportunity to win a medal in each olympics?

NashvilleQueen · 13/08/2016 21:52

He's like Robbie Williams when he left Take That and thought he was cool at Glastonbury wth Oasis.

BitOutOfPractice · 13/08/2016 21:53

I'm in the USA right now and sir Bradley has not even registered so I think you need to calm the fuck down

DelicatePreciousThing1 · 13/08/2016 21:58

Wiggins is sooooooo cool and has great style. He is truly awesome for those reasons alone!

WhooooAmI24601 · 13/08/2016 21:58

I'm sure DH made me watch a documentary about him a while ago and I sat on the sofa thinking "he's a bit of a dong" through most of it.

That said, I think Olympians have to be pig-headed to a point in order to focus on their sport to reach this level. Selfishness and dickheaded behaviour wouldn't be tolerated here because DH and I are both cake-loving lazy arses. But if he were to even think of competing at that level I think I'd be more tolerant of shitey behaviour; perhaps we underestimate that he's spent a huge proportion of his life either being isolated and exhausted or pandered to, and hasn't learned to stop being a bit of a teenage twat yet.

ChippyDucks · 13/08/2016 22:02

I luffs Bradley and especially his sideburns.
YABU
Grin

QueenieBob · 13/08/2016 22:12

BW is a twat. I've thought that ever since I saw a documentary on him a few years ago. When being interviewed after he won in Rio it was all about him, his team, the training, him and him. What about his wife who runs the house & brings up the kids while he bogs off training whenever he pleases? I've no doubt they love each other but a bit of humility & gratitude wouldn't go amiss. Twat.

QuackDuckQuack · 13/08/2016 22:36

I agree with this, you can't really have a "greatest Olympian" on that basis.

And the 2012 tweet wasn't actually written by Bradley Wiggins, though it is spot on about Piers Morgan.

All of that aside, why do we expect sports people to be shining beacons of virtue? There will be a reasonable range of personalities, other than lazy ones.

Cooroo · 13/08/2016 22:47

Well done Bradley on your achievement.

What is this MAMIL hatred? Look, exercise is good for us. Riding bikes is exercise. Lycra is the most comfortable thing to wear while cycling. Middle aged men, and women, are allowed to cycle. If you don't like it, don't stare. And grow up.

bearleftmonkeyright · 13/08/2016 22:54

YABU, I think Wiggo is a legend. But Laura Trott.... lets talk about her. She is a legend in the making. I have so much admiration for her and she so much enjoys her sport. Really enjoying the track cycling and the women are amazing.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 13/08/2016 22:54

I wouldn't mind the MAMILs if they buggered off to the local velodrome or park, but no, they insist on having their races and time trials up and down the local roads.

OneFlewOverTheDodosNest · 13/08/2016 22:54

I thought he was a right prat last night when all his team mates were celebrating and he just wandered off looking arsey - certainly seems to confirm the rumours that there's no love lost.
